Good interview with Mazroui. Proper pro and speaks excellent English and German.

Don't understand in this day and age why the young south American players don't invest some time into learning english.

Many claim to dream of playing in the pl.

I agree on Maz. He comes across really well and has played really well. I think he is the best full back we have had at the club for 10 or 12 years. I hope he can stay fit.
English is a universal language most European kids learn it at school and its thought in many schools across the world from very young ages. Many of the South American kids don't have the opportunity from young ages to learn the language.
The same can be said of the English players. They should be playing across the leagues in Europe but don't and language is often a big reason as to why young English players don't move abroad.

He was born in the Netherlands. In my experience a large number of Dutch people are at least trilingual. It's built into the historically global aspirations of a small trading country with a language no one speaks elsewhere. He plays for Morocco. Maybe he speaks Arabic too.

South Americans are far more cut off linguistically, their societies are poorer and their footballers often from difficult environments. Perhaps the better question is how many English footballers invest in learning French, German or Spanish. Not many, I'd wager. The English mentality is that we're above it. Can't be bothered. The same mentality that drove us out of the EU. We abut a continent with 3 major languages, but most footballers can't manage a single secondary language (nor can I! ) .

The Dutch lads speak better English than the English lads.

On the subject of languages, the Amadou Onana video 'that's not even my name' cracks me up with the language and the accent change.

I can't say I've seen a single English player that speaks any other language fluently. For the most part they can't even speak good English. Then you have guys like Dalot and Mazroui who speak it very well.

Some of the English lads struggle to even speak English, let alone a second language.

Speaking a second language tends to typically stem from one of two things. Either you are brought up in a bilingual home/ environment, or you are well educated and academically inclined.

Neither tend to be the case for English footballers.

I like the fact the northern European lads even tend to develop a local accent after a year or two, although none master it the way McLaren did.

Yay! I am well educated and academically inclined!

Yeah but you speak English and Australian Keefy completely bilingual ?.

Fluent in French and Spanish.

A move to South America or Ligue 1 awaits me….
