Just a word of caution to any parents out there that have kids playing sport.
A friend of mine lost his 12 yo daughter last night who collapsed and died on the pitch. You cannot imagine their pain and suffering.
There are many very cost effective heart screening options for anybody that plays sport that can detect weakness or defects that may have gone undetected before and are unknown.
Please look it up. It is the best money you will ever spend and urge your kids clubs to look it up to see if they can do a club screening day. It's becoming more common.
Thanks.

Awful to hear that Ken. Sound advice. Govt. help for sports clubs to meet the cost?

Very Sad Ken, so sorry to hear that and my condolences for what must be an awful situation for the family. You never expect your kids to go before you.
However. So important to see you highlight this, even at a difficult time for you and them.

My daughter is 13 and does long distance running and uses an inhaler having had a partial collapsed lung when she was 5.

I worry every time she does anything strenuous, but you have to let them do these things.

I agree that if there are things like screenings available then get them used and save the possible heartache later ? ??.

Very sorry to hear this Ken, and good post.

Unfortunately I have first hand experience of witnessing this many many years ago. Its devastating.

It's devastating news, and my heart goes out to the family. I wonder whether there is a link between kids suffering more heart issues and the rise in high caffeine energy drinks kids are consuming. High spikes in caffeine will put a developing and growing heart under undue strain.

In all the schools I've worked there has been an issue with kids drinking these drinks. They become a fad and all the kids look to jump on the bandwagon. As a teacher you see the impact they have on children, which is why they are banned in most schools. However, we all know that banning something in school does not stop kids from doing it.

Shappy there is loads of medical research linking the two. And leading to problems later in life. Strokes, diabetes etc. levels of caffeine should be lowered. Come on Streeting!
