Do Utd have their hands tied with Ashworth, or could they pursue another for the role of DOF should they not agree suitable compensation for Ashworth or if Ashworth decide to go elsewhere?

I understand that Ashworth shared an email from Barrada approaching him for a role at the club.

Finally who realistically would be alternative solutions to Ashworth.

{Ed002's Note - It is not hands tied but a need to figure a deal out.}

I think the problem now is if United abandoned the pursuit it would leave Ashworth high and dry, and who would want to work for us if we did something like that.

Surely too much water has passed under the bridge for him to go back and assume his role with Newcastle.

So then what? Do they sack him, do they keep him on gardening leave, do they take legal action against us for creating that situation?

It just needs sorting, if the clubs cannot come to an agreement then the court for arbitration in sport will.

Thanks ED002.

Do you still think that Paul Mitchell would have been a better choice than Dan Ashworth?

{Ed002's Note - Yes.}

Ed, would you care to give your reason for that? I feel like I agree to be honest. I was thinking about the manager position and reports Ashworth would lead on who this should be and it got me thinking, Ashworth has not had any success from a trophy winning point of view with any of the clubs he's been at and the managers he has worked with and then when you compare players, Mitchell's CV of recruitment is far stronger than Ashworth. I'm not trying to discredit Ashworth it's just feels his reputation is better than potentially his career suggests? And all this is just a football fan looking from the outside in so what happens internally could be a whole lot different. That said, he is still an upgrade on previous personnel.

{Ed002's Note - Paul Mitchell is an exceptionally talented scout and football advisor. He has performed at the highest level wherever he has worked. He would have made the ideal DoF for Manchester United.}

It's absolutely fair that Ed002 have this opinion, and his is likely to be much better than mine. However I think it's worth pointing out that Dan Ashworth has actually worked as a DoF. His role at Monaco was more akin to what appears to be described for what Wilcox is doing. So perhaps that was seen as a risk that Ashworth didn't bring.

{Ed002's Note - No. PM had the role of Sporting Director at Monaco. I was responsible for all of the recruitment. His role was nothing like Wilcox. You seem to be struggling to understand.}

"I was responsible for all of the recruitment" - Ed002 you've given yourself away! You were Paul Mitchell all along!

{Ed002's Note - A tiny mistake perhaps.}

Not sure our hands are tied, but his moment of stupidity made things more difficult, or expensive at least maybe.
