Interesting from the Daily Snail this morning: "Chelsea is 'VERY CLOSE to agreeing a $82.2m deal with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong' as they try to steal him away from rivals Man United. but the Dutchman must still decide if he wants to leave the Nou Camp or take a pay cut to stay"

Not sure if I buy it but if it ends up happening, we might as well just change our name to Newcastle (old version) . That's who we'll be in 5 years. Waiting on the appoint of Steve Bruce to steer us away from relegation season after season.

Agree0 Disagree0

If we don’t get CL next year, think United will start from scratch, get rid of players who haven’t performed, promote youngsters and use better analytical recruitment data to bring in suitable players that fit the style.

Then 5 years later….

It will be a utter shambles for Richard Arnold and John Murtogh or even for EtH, who kept on believing for 181 days that if De Jong leave, he will join United.
Will be a tight slap on the face. But I know, in management, they must have thick skin to feel any shame.

Personally I've gotten tired of FDJ and the twists and turns you could make an Amazon documentary about ManUtd chasing targets called as "Nothing or overpayment" documenantary.

10 Aug 2022 15:30:29
This happens every window, they target the wrong players, make derisory opening bids, negotiate for weeks, infuriate the fan base, panic, then overpay. They then retreat into the shadows and watch the chaos unfold on the pitch whilst the fans frustration turn towards the manager and players!

Direct the attention to where is belongs absent and disinterested owners and the incompetent CEO and Director of Football.

10 Aug 2022 16:16:03
DLIB, by all accounts the owners are inept but FdJ is ETH choice and so far he has been given his primary choices. Arnold and Murtaugh have even have a fee agreed with Barcelona. Should they move away from the designated target and again give the manager the 2nd, 3rd, 4th choice players that may not be good enough? How many managers have had this complaint that they did not get what they asked for? Unless ETH himself gives the go signal, i don't think the recruiters have to move on to secondary targets. If we fail then the entire saga has to be on ETH's head. He is the one who seems adamant on FdJ. If not for him, i think the board would have moved in on SMS.

I think there is so many conflicting stories out there that none of us know what is going on with this transfer other than Barcelona are mugging FdJ off one way or another.

Latest story is that we have apparently agreed a deal with his agent for him to join however the oustanding wages is the problem which we know about. This goes against the morning story of Chelsea being close to signing him.

Whatever the truth this is obviously one we are in for and is EtH's number 1 target that could really speed up the process we are going through. Also, if we do end up getting him will all the fans chastising Murtagh/ Arnold for not walking away then praise them for sticking to what the manager wanted and getting him.

Obviously if we lose the race you were all right!

If Arnold and Murtagh deliver in the next few years a team that goes into every season with a realistic shot at winning the EPL and ECL I would be delighted with them.

If McFred and Maguire were key components of that team again I would be delighted.

I am sure like most I don't care about the names or who I just want to see us challenging again. Like most I would gladly cheer anyone who delivered in either a United shirt or jacket and tie.

I like everyone have opinions on players and if we sign a player I am not a fan of, I would much rather be wrong and United sign a star.

Nobody wants anything but Arnold and Murtagh to succeed, people aren't happy with what they perceive thus far from but my god we all hope to proven wrong and they turn out to be brilliant.

UA - The appointment of a Director of Football was to stop this nonsense of a new manager coming into the Club and wanting to buy their own players. The appointment of a new manager was supposed to be aligned with the vision and philosophy of the Club.

EtH is not a scout, he’s not a recruitment expert, he is a coach. He wasn’t meant to come into the Club and suggest his own players. If Utd had a plan and vision for the Club then the recruitment team should be aligned with EtH or they should have appointed a different manager.

Martinez, Eriksen, Malacia, FdJ, Anthony etc have not been scouted by the Club. This idea that they are backing the manager is the reason this transfer window is now descending into absolute chaos.

I have no problem with a manager coming into the Club and wanting to buy their own players by the way, buts it’s an expensive way to operate. The Director of Football was appointed to bridge that gap. To appoint a manager aligned with the Clubs vision therefore making recruitment easier.

They appointed RR, didn’t like his advice and sacked him. They have now jumped into the EtH boat.

The reason the Club is in such a mess is because there is no experience or expertise above the manager. The fact that EtH has seemingly dismissed the Clubs options just emphasises the utter shambles that is going on. Surely all this should have been discussed and decided during the interview process.

What happens to Martinez if the next manager is Sam Alladyce. Ok an extreme example you get the point. If EtH fails then the Club in theory should appoint the new manager that shares his philosophy and can use his players.

My argument is John Murtough hasn’t got a philosophy or vision for the Club and is now taking the lead from EtH rather than the other way around, therefore the next manager could easily be someone like Simeone, totally different from EtH and the Club left in the exactly the same position as the last decade, with a squad of players not suitable for a new manager.

Dlib most of that only exists in your own head.
You have no idea what the role of DOF at united entails. All you know is what you'd like the role to be.
Ed002 has said many a time that top personnel have not joined united for that role as they don't like the job spec and proposed structure.
Eth made it clear at his interview and since confirmed by him that he will have the final say on new signings.
He wants players that fit the way he wants the team to play.
Obviously most of the players the club were scouting did not fit the profile he needs. So in the absence of scouting he is going with what he knows. That's how it appears to me.
The fdj chase is down to eth.
What's murtagh done wrong there?
No proper offers for players for sale.
Should he just go out and sign players that won't fit into the team framework?
Is raibot better than Fred or mctom?
Can he manage him well? I hope so but more importantly eth thinks so.
You need to deal with the reality of where we are and not keep looking for a new ceo new set up ne this that or the other as it won't be haltemprice under these owners.
Liking forward to the window closing and seeing who he has to work with and hope to see that team and squad improve bit by bit until the end of the season and see where that takes us.
Get it right on the pitch and you'll lose 90% of the negativity.
Less noise the better and it will give the manager the best chance of improving things on the pitch.
But you keep looking at it with your big negative head on.
We have the structure we have and spend more on players and wages than any other club hourly we will see it better spent under this coach.

Ken - II don’t want to get into a nonsensical argument with you although you like to remind everyone else that they don’t know what they’re talking about.

If you don’t agree with me that's fine but be constructive and tell me exactly what the Director of Football does at Man Utd, what is the actual transfer strategy and how exactly are things improving.

If the strategy is chasing FdJ all summer and ending up empty handed and buying Arnautovic then there is obviously something very seriously wrong. If you think EtH can improve the likes of Dalot, Shaw, Maguire, Fred, Mctominay, Rashford etc you’ll soon find out the reality of the situation. How patient you will be with EtH then only time will tell.

At the end of the day we don’t need to converse anymore, the proof will be in who we sign this window, what position we finish at the end of the season and the style of football we play.

The structure of the Club is appalling as evidenced by the constant panic buys, complete lack of plan and strategy, no title for a over a decade and trophyless for 5 successive years. You can’t just blame everything on Ole!

10 Aug 2022 21:25:48
Dlib I don't know the role nor do you. But yet you state above what the role was for. Where did you get that from?
Nobody disagrees as far as I know on here that the structure is appalling nobody disagrees that the buys have been poor. So why have you an issue with eth signing players he chooses.
He saw what they were scouting seen the mess of last few years and said no it's wrong this is the who I want and need.
So your not happy with the transfer group at ot. Neither is eth. So you both agree and so do I.
So what's your issue with him saying no this is who I want what you've been doing has not worked so ill I. d the targets you get them.
Your not happy with that approach either.
The owners are not going anywhere so eth can only do guys best.
Crying about it won't help. They got his lb choice they got his cb choice they got erikson at his request agreed a deal with Barcelona at his request for fdj.
The Ronaldo mess was a late curve ball so need addressing.
No point having a pop at me for ole you were one of the ones telling us all ole has it sorted he will come good.
In life you can deal with the hand your deadly and try and improve it or you can spend your life crying you have not been dealt a better hand. We just fall into different camps.
Some hands can change quicker than others but the glazers are going nowhere and the structure won't change.

Ken - If the Director of Football role wasn’t to put experts rather than bankers in charge of football operations then what was the point?! We even have a Deputy Director of Football now. If they are not doing what I suggested then what are they doing. The fact you don’t want to discuss or question this and hold them to account surprises me. The Club have championed a new chapter with a new CEO, Director of Football and Technical Director.

We must be allowed to voice our opinions and concerns otherwise what’s the point?! I don’t agree with being told to stop moaning just because there is nothing I can do to change things as an individual but collectively we can hold these people to account. The European Super League proved that if nothing else. We might not be able force them to sell but we can certainly put pressure on them to invest more money, not take dividends and put the right people in charge. Things will never change if people aren’t allowed to voice their opinion and highlight when the Club is being run in an appalling manner.

Mainstream media is now even engaging in the debate and talking sensibly about the current ownership and how it is damaging the Club.

11 Aug 2022 07:34:37
Quite unbelievable I seen it all now!
Supporters moan when a club buys the players and say to the manager here is player A, B C now sort them out and get them playing… as United done with Fred to Jose…. and many others previously. now we have a supporter (surely only 1) saying the manager should not buy the players the club should…. Jesus what do people want…

ETH should get the players he wants…do I think the ones he got or going after are good enough…No… but if this is a long term project I think that’s way it as to be…

Look at the team Jose building at Roma, he buying who he wants….

Am I confident ETH will succeed …No… but he is there he as to be given the tools he wants, I am worried about ETH bloody mindedness but have to live with it.
