Can we all give ETH a chance? The man is wealthy independently of football and chosen to take on arguably the biggest job in football.
He will ha e watched Utds struggles these past few years and knows that we are nowhere near good enough. He probably had a list of targets and took the job on with the agreement of the board to back him in going for whoever he wanted up to a certain financial amount.

Haaland and Nunes were never going to come to a non champions league team. De Jong may yet become a Utd player. Am sure that quietly Utd have been trying to get in players and later when the dust settles we will hear and understand more.

Meantime let's credit a manager who built a fantastic Ajax team every year after having to sell his best players to have the intelligence and knowledge to do the same for us if he has time.

Agree0 Disagree0

But if he watched so much of united play over past few seasons why even start with McFred on Sunday? Did he really expect anything different?

I am hoping he learnt from the mistakes he made on Sunday, because he did make some and I think he was quite shocked at Brighton which again is a worry if he had been watching, that’s all I am saying!

Yes I support him yes I want him to succeed but you have to be realistic he made mistakes, now let’s move on and hope he learns from them.

According to Ed002, Darwin was open to signing for us at the start of the window. At one point I believe we were even in pole position. Sadly, the board ended up dithering trying to push through a deal for a player who never wanted to sign for the club (and has repeatedly stated as much) and we ended up with neither.

I appreciate that Ten Haag will need time, but he really hasn’t gotten off to a good start. The money is clearly there to be spent (as evidenced by us dropping €40m on Rojo 2.0), so he needs to be providing the board with a list of realistic targets rather than pinning all of his hopes on De Jong and then panicking when the same players that were god awful last season continue to be god awful.

Other clubs have shown this window that quality players can be purchased for reasonable prices, yet Ten Haag’s insistence on us signing De Jong has led to them all slipping through our fingers, with only the likes of Rabiot and Arnautovich remaining.

New Yorker

I was at the game on Sunday and, whilst I can understand his initial line up, he failed to adjust to the circumstances of the day….

Brighton knew we were up for the press so instead played long balls to welbeck……. All game!

As soon as it was established that brighton were avoiding the press, he should have changed tactics, but he didn’t

I also expected to see him on the touchline throughout the whole 90 minutes regardless of the score, but he wasn’t

Again we waited until being 2-0 down and for ronaldo to spark some concern amongst the brighton defence and open up spaces for others…too little, too late and far too reminiscent of last season.

I believe in eth, but I expected more from the first home game I just say.

Does anyone think Ten Hag ever wanted to be starting the season in the position where McTominey and Fred were his starting CM?

We have a DoF a technical director A scouting team, we had an interim telling them this was a mess.

Fact is its still a mess and questions need to be asked why.

Maybe ETH wanted to see for himself if the players who he has been working with these past weeks have taken on board what he has been telling them. Maybe he wanted to see if they could change. Maybe he waited til after the half time interval to see how his team talk went down and now maybe he has had confirmation that this lot cannot learn and therefore he is trying to do something about it. It's all maybes. What I do know is that Sir Alex lost his first game. Arsenal were bottom of the Premier league last season at the start. We need to have patience and back the manger fully.

I love how many experienced football coaches post on here.

The idea that EtH with what most people believe to be a bunch of players with limited technical football skills and intelligence, has not only coached the players to perfect one way of playing, but also coached plan B and maybe even plan C into the players to such a degree that they can change tactics at a drop of a hat is frankly ridiculous.

It'll take 3-4 months to get the players he has to perfect his style of play. Even then it probably won't be good enough as too many players in our squad cannot play the way he wants to the level required.

It'll take longer still for the players to be able to coherently, consistently and comprehensively change between various tactics effectively at the drop of a hat.

The fact that they cannot do it in his first game after only 6 weeks of training should be obvious to even those who have coached at a youth level.

As it stands he did make several changes in both the first and second half. His changes enable the side to get a foothold in the second half, score a goal and almost get something from the game. Sadly too many players made individual mistakes and the team isn't yet playing as a cohesive unit.

I think everyone's biggest issue is we are still watching the same headless chickens that we saw last year.

I know EtH thinks he can coach them to decent players, you have to admire that, but most of us would be more than happy if most of that squad disappeared.

Shappy

Nobody is suggesting a plan b or plan c would be refined and easily adapted to. But he has to be flexible to the situation and when something is clearly not working, change it!

Like I said in the above post, I’m optimistic eth is actually the man, but neither him or the team performed very well on Sunday…. in my opinion

So what would you call moving Eriksen from false 9 to holding No.6?

Is that not changing things?

C’mon man it was already 2-0 and only 1 change prior to 80th minute, I’m not calling for his head I just think it was underwhelming all round.

LOL. I’m all for a manager trying something new, but let’s be fair who ever thought it would work with Eriksen as false 9, you go on about Ronaldo not playing enough pre season games, how many did Eriksen play, not half as naturally fit, no pace, not that much mobility never played the position before, if you wanted to take a gamble there were much better players to try out there Garnacho/ Amad/ Pellestri/ I’m sure any of those would have give you more then playing Eriksen there, it was a mistake, it may have worked in Dutch league but not in premier!

Mike, the fact we were already 2-0 down was more due to individual errors, or several individual errors in the same move.

We conceded 2 goals in 9 minutes in the middle of the first half. The second goal going in on the 39th minute. Very few managers if any would be making a sub 5 minutes BEFORE halftime unless it was for an injury. We were not hemmed in to our own defensive third with Brighton having shot after shot. In the first half in which we played awfully we had 63% possession. We just kept losing the ball in dangerous areas compounded by individual errors.

The change happened early in the second half (53rd minute), we then had a few chances and scored.

Prompting Brighton to make changes in the 75th minute, seven minutes after we scored. A change made to shore things up.

Just three minutes later EtH reacted to bring on Donny for McTominay to give us a midfield three of Eriksen, Bruno and Donny. Very much a change to try and create more chances and score the equaliser, maybe even have a chance of a winner.

The only players left on his bench at this point are Heaton, Varane, Malacia, Elanga and Garnacho. A keeper, a CB a LB and two young fairly inexperienced forwards.

In the 86th minute he was readying the final changes (last roll of the dice), looking to bring on Elanga, Garnacho and Malacia in search of an equaliser. He didn't get a chance to bring them on until the 90th minute.

At halftime we were 2-0 down. We had 63% of the ball but had only had 5 shots to Brighton's 12. EtH then made changes at key points in the second half and we ended the match with 63% possession but having had 17 shots to Brighton's 15. Meaning in the second half we had 12 shots to Brighton's 3. Very much a turn around and change in fortunes. Unfortunately we were unable to capitalise on those chances.

If you understand and appreciate the xG (expected goals) stat then the game ended with United having and xG of 2.09, to Brighton's 1.78. Which suggests United shaded the better chances and a 2-2 draw was probably the fair result. However we lost, its a learning curve.

But to suggest that EtH just sat on the bench with his thumb up his arse not trying to influence the game is just a false assumption. He did what he could with what he had. In hindsight could he have started a different team, yeah sure, but there is no evidence that it would have drastically changed the outcome of the result.

Anyone who’s on his back after 1 game ain’t no fan and needs to reassess themselves.

10 Aug 2022 09:24:54
Amad pellestri come off if newyorker

Ronaldo didn’t deserve to start and tbf he’s lucky he even got on the pitch after his antics pre season.

And Erickson has played as a false 9 many times so it’s not the first time and it’s not like he was experimenting and he was training pre coming to united something ronaldo wasn’t doing

Martial was out and Ronaldo isn’t fit, if he would have started it would have gone against everything he's trying to build in that dressing room and he wouldn’t have lasted the 90 anyway so then your looking at bringing someone on to play false 9 anyway

Where as if he brings him on as a sub when the opposition is more tired he’s got more chance of making an impact.

Which tbf we looked better in the 2nd half had a few chances which on another day rashford scores 2

But it’s wasn’t to be it’s not that big of a deal. it’s 1 game

Try judge him once he’s got an actual team he wants.
