I read below people want to start Varane with Martinez. Today Varane was very poor, looked laboured in possession gave the ball away a lot and also passed into corners giving the full back litte options ala Maguire last season, for me Maguie and Martinez are our best option for now until we replace Maguire.

Imo Varane covered a lot for Laird as he was caught out of position multiple times.
Lisandro's composure was something else. Naturally left footed, so will cement the LCB spot.

Varane was mostly poor last season as well when he played, rest of the times he was brilliant on the medical table.

I thought he was our best centre half last year, I think the results with him in the team proved that to be true as well.

Don’t see the fuss with varane! How Maguire gets so much stick and varane is portrayed as this world class centre half amazes me!

Both Varane and Maguire have been poor signings so far. The only defence Varane has is that he was playing with players who were out of form.
On his day he is better than Maguire which really isn't saying much, if you are comparing a CB against Maguire.
Martinez looks really, albeit one game. Personally, givne the pre season so far, Bailly deserves to start. Reward those who have performed well.

Chris have you watched Varane head the ball back into the middle of the penalty area then blunder across and pull down/ tackle one of his teammates out of the way for the opposition player to score?
Have you seen Varane repeatedly be in the wrong position, repeatedly play poor passes that put teammates under pressure, repeatedly lose the ball, repeatedly head simple clearances back into the danger zone, repeatedly blame his teammates for his own mistakes?
I've seen Maguire do all of those things, time and time again.
Has Varane been as good as we hoped? No not yet, injury and the general poor form of the entire team last season has hampered him in settling in no doubt. Yet he has been our best CB when he has played.

Shappy perhaps we might have seen a few of those things had Varane spent more time on the field than on the treatment table.
