ETH sticking with Harry as Captain I see. Varane also injured before the season even started. Clearly Harry will be starting every game so it's a Varane replacement we need. Need to replace them both IMO.

What exactly did we expect EtH to say after a week or so of training. I think the difference this year will be that the captaincy (even if he still has it into the season) will not preclude him from being dropped.
EtH does not appear to be afraid to drop players so I would not currently worry about Maguire being named as captain. Also, we may go for 3 at the back in the early stages depending on who else comes in and this suits Maguire more than a back 4.
Coming from a rugby background the captain is merely a figure head and there are multiple captains across the pitch. I would expect De Gea, De Jong and maybe Fernandes to form a core group that can rotate in as captain on any given game.

I was crying out for Fernandes to be captain in his first season. Feel last season he was just bullied by Ronaldo to even speak up, so just sulked a lot. still think the players should decide who is captain. If they feel it Harry then so be. They know more than we do.

Fernandes a captain? If you’re bullied by another player, surely you can’t be captain material. He doesn’t even merit a place in the team. You need character and ability to succeed. His ability is questionable and his character is more than suspect.

Sorry but his first season he had passion and anger. Ronaldo came in and he bottled it. Many people have said it. When Bruno came people were loving his passion, Ronaldo came along the passion turned to sulking.

If Maguire is going to be captain, I wonder why we’re going so hard for Martinez.
I really like Martinez, but surely Varane will start when fit? If ETH rates Maguire enough to give him the captaincy, perhaps Martinez is being signed to play holding midfielder?

Downsie53, Varane can’t be relied on. We’ve had our pants well and truly pulled down with this signing, as much as it hurts me to say.
He is a real classy defender but never fit. Real saw us coming. We all thought he was a snip but Real snapped our hand off.
I’m with Blackpool on this one, we need 2 new cb’s if we are being serious. We have Bailly (fitness) Varane (fitnes) Maguire (dogrubbish) and Lindelof, not good enough.

I think if Martinez does come in we will see him in DM. From what I've seen he tends to favour the left hand side when he plays there. Along with the Malacia signing, I think EtH is looking to give Maguire more protection rather than replace him. If (as someone has already said) Maguire gets hooked at some point, the we have somebody who can also slot in that side of the back line.

Signing Martinez would enhance our versatility. He can play in a number of positions - in a flat back four, as a left back, left centre back of back three or even a defensive midfielder. I think signing him make a lot of sense.

Jodler, Bruno doesn't merit a place in our team? Are you serious? Get a grip of yourself. You could say that about each and every player last season. However he is one of our better players, he gets goals and assists. Some people are so easy to forget, because of a bad season in which he still posted more goals and assists than other creative players who were vying for top 4.
