I'll be shocked if we buy more than 3 players, a CM, CB and possibly a flexible CF/ RW. We still have a very large squad, midfield alone Fred, McTominay, Sancho, Bruno add to that some youth and any purchases.

At the back we have loads too, still about 4 players to get rid of from the this squad. We have way too many players who are not good enough, we need space for some youth coming through.

Waiting to hear the same old excuses. End up signing Neves from Wolves for about 60 Mill say the manager needs to access the squad.

{Ed014's Note - I think there’s a need to understand the gap between the rest of us and the top two, for even Chelsea it was almost 20 points, for yourselves 35.

That is a huge gap. ETH will literally have no idea yet of how he’ll close that gap as he’s yet to work with the squad you have.

He’s got a pretty short period to assess what he has and how they’ll work in any system he wants to implement.

I think the attitude/mentality of many of the squad is the first and most important thing that needs to change.

ETH certainly comes with an impressive record in his home country and Ajax played some fabulous football the season they made the semi-final in the Champions League.

So don’t stress to much about incomings, there for sure will be some but he needs time to work his magic so chill, be happy with whoever comes in and just get excited at the prospect of him taking you along the right road to getting back in the game.

We understand Ed but how many of us can take another season of McFred?
Or Rashford looking like a 38 year old.

{Ed014's Note - I know that mate but this guy has the biggest chance of being the real deal, he can’t buy a side in a season and let’s see what he gets from McFred, Rashford and the rest.

A team working to a plan in a proper system will be far better than the pulling in every direction and doing their own thing that’s been happening here for years.

All about progression. If we can see progression in the style of play and the mentality/ attitude then that’s good enough. We won’t win the title next season. We need to focus on getting back into the CL regularly and build season on season.

Also don’t lose site if the fact we are at the back of the queue now for the best players. Once the CL teams have concluded their business we will then get a pick of players left.

When Rangnick said this squad needs 10 new players to be competitive at the top of the table, he was right, but that isn't going to happen in one window.

I think many fans want/ expect to see 5 or 6 new first 11 players this summer.

That was always going to be tricky. We also need to make sure we don't make the same mistakes as we have in the past. When LvG came in we signed 6 players in one window. Shaw, Herrera, Di Maria, Blind, Falcao and Rojo.

Two were already agreed (Shaw and Herrera), Di Maria and Falcao were brought in to sell shirts mostly, while Rojo and Blind were two players LvG requested.

Only Shaw remains at the club, while the others were either flops or bang average at best.

We wasted a huge amount of money that summer and in many others.

The signings we make this summer have to work. We can't afford to sign 2 or 3 players who just don't work out.

The biggest issue is we have a broken and bloated squad. Getting players out the club is more important this summer.

Give EtH a streamlined squad without the blaggers and trouble makers.

It's much easier to train a new system/ style into a smaller group of players than a large one.

Make space in the squad for our talented young players coming through. Players like Laird, Mengi, Bernard, Fernandez, Garner, Mainoo, Garnacho, Hannibal, Shoretire and McNeil. That's a team minus the goalkeeper. All of them capable of stepping up for a few games here or there if needed.

As I see it we will sign a CM, most likely FDJ. We will get a flexible forward, Antony seems the obvious choice but don't be surprised to see a wild card such as Charles De Ketelaere if Ajax won't let Antony leave this summer.

After that I think it very much depends on departures.

EtH would like a new CB, but with Maguire, Varane, Lindelof, Jones, Bailly and Tuanzebe already on the books 2 or 3 will need to leave to create space for a new CB.

He'd like a new full back as well, but we currently have Dalot, AWB, Shaw, Telles and Williams in the first team. With Laird and Fernandez in the academy. Again departures are needed if we are to get another full back in.

We will definitely sign a back up keeper now Henderson's move to Forest is pretty much finalised. It looks most likely to be Daniel Bachmann from Watford for under 5m. This signing is just about getting a body in for cover.

If we cannot bring in a CB or a fullback due to not being able to get existing ones out of the club then I could see us going for another CM, someone like Manu Kobe or Matheus Nunes if he is still available. That would almost certainly see Garner head back out on loan I'd imagine.

That's my view on what we will likely see this summer.

Thank christ ed14, the voice of reason!

{Ed014's Note - there’s reasons to be cheerful spenno, that’s for sure.

24 Jun 2022 19:54:12
Completely agree with that Ed.

I think a few signings are needed to freshen the squad and the attitudes, hopefully wake everybody up and make training feel different to last season.

But eth coming in, and some bad apples going put of the door are both huge positives.

{Ed014's Note - definitely mate and it’s really the first time that’s been going to happen for a long time.

We need at least 10 new players in the squad with a bit of luck a few of them will be filled by youth coming through. Might take a season or two to get there but I would take that.

A few people mentioning how bloated our squad is, but I’m not sure I agree.

Off the top of my head, we have Bruno, Donny, Fred and Scott (four players) for three midfield spots and Ronaldo, Rashford, Martial and Sancho (four players) for the three attacking spots. Sure, there are youth players who could slot in, but I would argue that with only 8 senior players for 6 starting spots, we’re actually woefully understaffed in those parts of the pitch.

It could perhaps be argued that we have one too many center backs. Even then though, if we’re able to shift Axel, Bailey and Jones, I think most would still expect us to try to bring in two more to replace them, so, again, bloated doesn’t feel like the right word at all.

Our problem is that our squad has far too many bang average players on wages that are far too high for us to be able to shift them. There are only five or six that I’d keep if given the choice, and none that I’d be too bummed out about us losing other than perhaps DDG.

25 Jun 2022 08:47:53
Redseven, we have already seen several player leave.

Our squad when EtH took over looked like this:

DDG, Henderson, Heaton, Grant, Bishop.

AWB, Dalot, Laird, Maguire, Varane, Lindelof, Bailly, Jones, Tuanzebe, Mengi, Bernard, Shaw, Telles, Williams, Fernandez.

Pogba, Matic, McTominay, Fred, Donny, Bruno, Andreas Pereira, Garner, Hannibal.

Ronaldo, Cavani, Rashford, Sancho, Martial, Mata, Lingard, Elanga, Amad, Pellistri, Greenwood, Chong, Garnacho and Shoretire.

That's 43 players who need to be accommodated next season either by selling them, fitting them into the first team squad or by loaning them out.

Currently 6 have left the squad (Grant, Pogba, Matic, Lingard, Mata and Cavani) . Leaving 37 still to deal with.

We very much need to deal with who is leaving (permanently or on loan) before we can understand where we can make new additions.

Midfield seems the lightest, but we still have Pereira and Garner who could be part of the squad next season alongside Fred, McTominay, Bruno and Donny. As well as Hannibal who looks like he needs game time at a higher level than the Under 23's.

So that still potentially 7 players for 3 positions.

Our defence last season was nowhere near good enough, but we still have 15 defenders on the books and only 4 places in the first team. We can name nearly 4 entirely different back fours.

Up front Elanga did enough last season to become a part of the squad, while Garnacho will need game time this season. He already has the vultures circling and has played for his national side. So those two alongside Ronaldo, Rashford, Sancho and Martial gives us 6 players for 3 positions. That's before we consider the 19m Amad and the 10m Pellistri. Something needs to be sorted for those lads as well, are they apart of the first team or will they be loaned out/ sold? Because if they stay then we have 8 players for 3 positions. While what happens with Greenwood and Chong who knows.

This squad is bloated and the majority of the work to prepare it for EtH and next season HAS to focus on departures more so than arrivals.

Rangnick’s ‘need ten players’ statement has become the benchmark of our expectation. It’s also caused panic and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the reason he is no longer at the club. Ten Hag himself alluded to the squad being the same players who came second in the previous season, which was more the kind of ‘positive’ statement the club want to hear.
We keep hearing about the club being bloated so IMO a few will leave without being replaced, or only being replaced with the best 3-4 youths we have, plus 3-4 senior signings. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is 2 mids, a versatile forward and reserve GK, all required positions in the team in terms of numbers whereas we have the bodies in defence and I think he’ll want to see what he can do with coaching first.
