Been watching Smalling and other ex playes which we sold, considering them as not up to the mark.

I am starting to believe that players were always good, they were there to be coached, by a good coach. Not with emotional appointments like Moyes, Ole, Rangnick. Mourinho, SAF and to certain extent LVG showed that they can work with a comparatively less talented pool of players and achieve better performances.

I am sure that if Mourinho or LVG would have given more time, we would not have been in such a dire condition. We would have certainly developed a style of play.

Conclusion is that I am hopeful that with current set of players, coach like ETH will be able to get most out of the current players, I know some positions needs reinforcements, but I am now very very hopeful. I have realised that players are not the problem, the coaches were.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't disagree with you and I think you make some good points I wouldn't argue against but Smalling is 6ft 5,rarely scored from corners or was much of a threat in an attacking sense .

For such a big man he had very little upper body strength compared to someone like Craig Dawson or Tarkowski of Burnley, very easily pushed off the ball.

Worst of all his last 2 seasons with us he suddenly developed the terrible habit of holding and grabbing opposition forwards at set pieces, he was often a red card waiting to happen in the modern game. Probably has been coached better since leaving us but at the time I wasnt sorry to see him go.

This is just not about Smalling, its about all other players who have left because of bad coaching, Memphis, Smalling, Mkhitaryan, Herrera etc.

Smalling is always better than Jones, him winning MOTM in conference league final proves it. I think he still has greater number of games for MUFC than Jones have managed till date.

Sancho, deadly attacker in Germany, comes to us and struggles, Varane, top defender when with Madrid, came to us and looks like a player running with a limp. The list is long Pogba, Van de Beek, Matrial, Alexis Sanchez, Di Maria, Juna Mata

One example is Luis Diaz, a player who has a confirmed history of malnutrition, rocks the ground with his performances.

Again, all top level players or you can say players who can get in to any team's squad, but they struggled here under a below par Coach.

Smalling without doubt one of the worst footballers I’ve ever seen! Absolutely dreadful! Paid obscene amounts of money and couldn’t pass a ball, controls ball! Horrendous!

PF mourinho had smalling here and he was shocking. Mourinho and Van Gaal worked with the players above that you named. I get there is a coaching element, of course there is. But the players also have to have the right character, and want to improve. Memphis didn’t have that in his time here. I think I remember ed1 saying we were going to try him on the right and he didn’t want that.

Players haven’t improved here for a long time, but players have to also be responsible for their own development as well. A good coach can’t make you a good player without the correct work ethic.

Then what about the decline in performances of Rashford, Bruno, Sancho etc. I am sure someone at the club is responsible to keep the squad morale in check. Someone who must rang the alarm once they see or feel that players, who should be on their peak, are actually on a decline.

There was this dreadful pattern in our play in recent times, where close to no crosses were sent in the box, as the box was always empty, ball was recycled from left to right in defence. I miss the poster who was named as NoMidfield, as it was the case then and it was the case now, we don't have a mid field. It pained to see the last 2 games, we were tormented by Brighton and schooled by Palace.

Again, I believe ETH will turn it upside down, CR7 will be his captain and I think we will get De Jong to partner him with de beek. Next winter/ summer window we will go all out for Darwin Nunez.

PF every manager has had his faults. The players aren’t blameless. But using Rashford as your example. There’s something serious he needs to sort himself. I’ve played to a pretty decent level of rugby in the past under some excellent coaches and some poor coaches. Ultimately at the highest level the vast majority of coaches are very good, but it was on me to improve under them.
