Interesting now with Xavi saying today the economic situation at Barcelona may dictate their decision on De Jong, a few weeks back he was going no where and an integral part of the team. He's obviously for sale, but does he want to come to united and what price?

Agree0 Disagree0

He will have better options than United I'd guess, just whether those options would be willing to pay what both Barcelona and De Jong would want.

We will now doubt be in the mix to sign him if possible but I'd be surprised if we actually get him, even if he does leave.

Despite that, I think he'd be a very good signing and would give us a player in the middle of the park who is brilliant on the ball, can pass and who works within the system being implemented. We haven't had that since Carrick retired.

I think this position is the most important one for Utd to fill this coming window. This player will dictate the tempo of our game and be the cog making everything tick. I'd love it to be de Jong and irrespective of how it turned out, Pogba was signed when CL wasn't on offer so it can happen. I think we have a few things in our favour but clearly a few against too. I guess it will depend on whether we want a protracted auction all summer, and on the player's wishes.

{Ed002's Note - Manchester United have a preferred target and that is at risk from CL football not being available.}

Please can you expand on who that player is Ed? Maybe Rice or SMS?

{Ed002's Note - SMS - I keep talling you all this. Rice plays in a different position.}

22 May 2022 13:05:55
Thanks Ed2. I'm in fear of us getting SMS, I think he's a very average player who doesn't possess the skill in tight areas, another Pogba. He works well at Lazio as the Italian league is not very intense like the PL.
If United want to progress then Rice and De Jong should be bought. That's the size of the rebuild required and on top, a top striker (nunez) and one or two centre backs, should be bought. Lots of money is required, and lots of clearing out the useless players that are occupying spaces in the squad. And finally, trust in the younger players and some high quality coaching.
Sounds far fetched, but unfortunately, that's how far behind United are and even all the above might not bring them near City or Liverpool, but it'll be a step in the right direction.

Rice and Erikksen on a free? As good as de jong but financially feasible? ( apart from the fact they’ll have better options.

Without ECL football, a history of amateurism in the board room, and a manager who has yet to establish himself in English football, our attractiveness is limited. The priority in this window is to acquire good players who have the right mental characteristics to establish a base from which a consistently completive team can grow. There are no doubt plenty of excellent candidates out there whose qualities have yet to be shown in their best light. We have to hope the EtH and the club can winkle them out. The priority, I would imagine, will be defense and defensive mid (often the less spectacular positions), and the hope that players like Rashford, Sancho, Elanga, Bruno and even Fred will show themselves to be worthy of the shirt next year.

22 May 2022 15:55:10
Rice and eriksen will be good.
Shawthing, I don't understand why Fred gets so much stick. He gives 100% and he was arguably our best player when played further up the pitch where he's supposed to play.

22 May 2022 16:19:29
Fred is garbage. have your standards slipped that low AAA. His passing is awful his control is awful his game management is awful. Would he get close to city's team? Liverpool? Chelsea?
We will not be signing rice this summer can we not just put that to bed.

22 May 2022 16:23:18
Probably because Fred can't control the football consistently.

A pretty important aspect of midfield play.

22 May 2022 16:41:45
SMS looks like a very good player for EPL I think. He could be very good. But we really might be missing out on these players without UCL.

22 May 2022 18:18:16
Lazio have hardly been in CL so it may not be a huge issue. Sms is a fantastic player imo. A lot of really good attributes.
He is not very quick will but technically top class.
Epl is a big change but he would have a great chance of success.
I'd like both him and fdj.

{Ed077's Note - that maybe why he wants his next club to be a CL club. Maybe he wants to play CL footy more regularly?

22 May 2022 19:25:02
Those two in midfield would be cracking Ken, but I think we really need to get an out and out DM.

22 May 2022 19:41:15
For a midfielder the club seems to want SMS, EtH seems to want De Jong and Rangnick wants Haidara.

It'll be interesting to see who we get if anyone and what this means for Donny.

22 May 2022 21:35:55
I think DM is more important than CM for this season in terms of priority as we don't have anyone who understands this role. I am not going to repeat who I want here, been saying it now for 2 or 3 years.

22 May 2022 19:26:22
Well let's see if he is up to the challenge of helping rebuild united ed077 .
If he's not and gets what he considers to be a better offer then so be it.
I think he is made of the right stuff and we would be doing well if we got him imo.

{Ed077's Note - I've liked him for years. Think we should have moved Pogba on when we had the chance and replaced him with SMS.
