Saul Niguez on loan anybody? He didn't do anything at Chelsea but he would be an upgrade on our midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

Simply no.

He's lost his way a bit. He's made no impact at all at Chelsea, but then again they do have a tough midfield to break into.

Spenno, I'm not sure what happened to him. A couple of years ago he was one of the best midfielders in the world, and was certainly playing better and more consistently and a higher level than either of Jorginho or Kovacic. While now he's struggling to get ahead of Loftus-Cheek and Barkley.

Is it a case of him excelling in Simeone's system/ style of play, but struggling elsewhere. Maybe, but then he has always been pretty good for the Spanish national team that plays in a very different way to Atletico Madrid.

I wonder if him getting a 9 year contract at Atletico meant he got too comfortable and lost some drive.

Either way, with how he's playing right now I think he'd have a similar impact as Falcao. Big name signing who would then struggle and ultimately be underwhelming.

We need to start building towards the future, and I don't see Saul as part of that. Best look elsewhere for a quality, young CDM who can become a key part of our midfield for the next 5-10 years.

“Rice and Saul both have the ability and intelligence to play a holding role, yet I get the feeling both are capable of much more. I'm not sure either really have the passing range for a deep lying playmaker sort of role, Saul maybe, but definitely not Rice. While both seem comfortable driving with the ball and playing further up the pitch. Maybe a pure holding role would be a little restrictive for them. Both could do the role for us and would excel at it though if signed” (Shappy July 21).

So Shappy - 6 months ago Saul would “excel” for MU? Has Saul really deteriorated that much?

This is what Maze means. Much fanfare one minute, then the player is cast aside the next. This was 5-6 months ago. Come on.

“Simply no”. Ok comrade.

We dodged a bullet.
He has been atrocious at Chelsea.
Not sure why, but he seems to be afraid on the ball and bullied off it.

Maze, simply 6 months ago Saul hadn't struggled with the pace of the EPL. I was basing that on his performances for Atletico, he hasn't been able to replicate those elsewhere.

While Manchester United are also in a very different position now to where we were 6 months ago. What we needed from a player to play for Ole in his style of play under his management is obviously going to be different to what we will need under our next permanent manager and that managers style of play. While it's safe to assume that we are at a start of another rebuild cycle.

Certainly the new manager will have very different ideas about how he will want the team to play and what players he will want to suit that style.

Also as a side note Rice's passing has looked much better this season. He looks like he's worked on it, or maybe the role Moyes is playing him in this season has allowed him to show it off more.

Some of us Maze have the ability to grow and develop, depending on what new information we see. Others get stuck in a rut, unable to move with the times, unprepared to have their views or understanding challenged and unable to synthesise that new information into what they already thought they knew.

Lets be honest saul eould still walk into our team,

Olayers from la liga, germany france take time to settle

I would still take him over matic and fred.

{Ed004's Note - would like to hear Chelsea fans opinions on Saul over the last month or so. From the few times I have seen him recently he has played a lot better. Moved the ball a lot quicker etc}

23 Jan 2022 16:56:42
Ok Shappy. Give Maze a break. Maze knew you would provide some sort of lengthy post to justify a response.

5-6 months ago he would excel. Now he is not good enough. Keen to hear you views on Sancho - is he not good enough because he has been of the pace.

Need to stop building players up to tear them down moments later. Maze has many more examples but will not embarrass you.

“Start of a new rebuild cycle” - behave. MU rebuilding since 2013.

“What we needed from a player to play for Ole in his style of play is obviously different to what we will need under the next permanent manger” - has the style changed that much?

So you think MU should not sign a single player this month as who knows about the next permanent manager? On other posts you are saying sign up x, y and z. Scrambled.

Chelsea fan here. A quick note on Saul. His first few months in England were really bad. Haven't seen many performances from a PL midfielder that were as bad as what he put out in his first few starts. And to I think most people's surprise he didn't seem to improve.

But like Ed004 said up above, in recent weeks he's indeed looked a bit better. Now I'm not saying he looks anything like the super talent we saw at Atletico a few years ago, but he's connecting on passes more, playing them with more intent and urgency. He doesn't look as scared anymore to receive the ball, and seems much more at ease with the tempo. In particular in our 1st leg of the Carabao semi final vs Spurs he looked quite good.

Still don't see how he'd help your team. McTominay, Fred are definitely better than him, and I don't think he's a real upgrade on Matic. But at least he seems to have moved on from the "detriment to the team when he plays" category!

Maze, Saul probably is good enough to get in our current side even in his current form. But that is more to do with the dire options we have over his own form.

Every player you sign is a risk, 6 months ago maybe he was a risk worth taking. But considering his wages and how poor he has been at Chelsea he might not be worth the gamble.

Like is said the club's situation has changed as well.

I think it is a risk to sign any player in January considering we'll have a new manager in the summer.

Some risks might be worth it, such as those who could be picked up for less than 10m as they have expiring contracts in the summer. We have to balance the risk between signing a player who the next manager might not want and leaving us short of quality to finish this season inside the top four. Which will obviously make signing the right players harder in the summer if we don't have UCL football.

Signing someone like Zakaria or Kamara might be the difference between finishing 4th or 5th. While signing them on the cheap means if the next manager doesn't want them then we could in theory sell them for a profit.

As for Sancho, he's young, has his best years ahead of him, and hasn't really had much of a chance yet. Let him settle and have a run of games and then let's see.

The style has changed . We are trying to take control and the best example is against Ham. Some people can understand this from start and some not so clever maybe understand this when it is the finished article.
We needed more effective players under Ole but we need more team players under Rangnick (and i guess under the new manager as well) and that's the reason Bruno doesn't play like second striker any more but as a number 8.
As it seems you don't understand that a person can change his opinion when he realise he was wrong or informations change-so i am with Shappy in the continuing attacks. I don't like him but I respect him, at least more than a poster who usually give digs to anyone and think he is the smartest person in the room.

Have a bit of pride in our team, Saul has been dreadful at Chelsea and I wouldn’t want him anywhere near our team!
