We talk a lot about who should be United's next manager, but let's consider the risk/ rewards for the appointee beyond the short term financial incentive.

If it's a young manager who is yet to lead a top European club, then the risk is that you fail and pretty much halt your progress.

If it's a more established manager without trophies under the belt then maybe this is a golden opportunity to burnish your reputation. Of course it could go the other way. once an also ran, always an also ran.

A top manager with multiple trophies under his belt. I think this is a pipe dream.

Your decision has to be influenced by the appointment of Rangnick. Will he be able to sell the idea that the club is committed to supporting the manager with both the transfer cash. and in the getting rid of any player who is of no playing value within the envisioned strategy. In other words the principle raison d'être going forward is football success and not selling shirts or being one of the owner's or past managers favorite players. In other words, an assurance that the Woodward/ Ferguson era is over. Then you are going to want a time guarantee so that the wholesale changes can be made.

I have no idea who the best choice would be, but in practical terms it's kind of hard to look beyond Pocchetino at the moment. He needs a challenge. If he fails then he's probably in no worse position than he is now. but if he succeeds, his reputation will be enhanced no end. Whoever it is I don't see United being a top contender within the next 3 years.

Shaw,

Good post. I agree with you.

I think the decision has been made. I've no evidence or knowledge to that effect but its just a gut feeling I have.

I would think it's down to the last couple of candidates at a minimum.
I'm just as interested in the consultancy role RR will have and whether he has any influence.

Interesting few months ahead.
Should be good craic looking in from the outside as we all do.

Whos your 2 guesses ken?

Between poch and ten Haag I would think, is that who you have ken? Seen Rodgers mentioned again but can’t see it myself.

I think it's poch. eth is a possibility imo.

It will be Pochettino.

Poch is a decent manager. But just as Red Man said in another post, he is fergie's choice. I don't agree with Poch as manager.
I think Ten Hag or Ruben Amorim play the sort of football RR is attempting to play at United.
Amorim will manage one of the very big clubs within the next three years. He's a superb tactician, demands respect and hard work. But I can't see the cowards running our club going for him.
Ten Hag will be my choice, experienced, has a superb knowledge of the game, and manages to get Ajax competing with the best. He's also a very strict manager and plays the high press game. I hope it is either TH or Amorim.

would be happy with either, but number 1 would be ETH but that's just me.

if we can't get eth till next summer when his contract runs out then let RR do the next 12 months.

Good post Ken. But if RR has no influence then what’s the point?
