I believe RR understands the problem but he does not have the players to resolve.
The problem in midfield screams out in not having players able to read the game and so close space down. More importantly being able to make passes to a MU player but unfortunately this passing fault is not just to midfield.

Last night during the game I counted a ratio of four to one in comparison to Villa giving the ball away . We will never be able to control games with this poor capability.

Yet the BBC gave Mac T man of the match, perhaps it was because he scored .
We desperately need a player to the class of Rice from West Ham, and possibly one other as Mcfred are not reliable consistently game to game .

I think it was a very good all-round performance from McTominay - one of a few since RR came in. He’s probably one of our best players atm which is also pretty worrying as he’s never going to be world class but shows all of the traits literally everyone else is lacking.

There are tons of DMs much better and at the same time cheaper than Rice.

I don't understand this occultic love to say the least.

Ed001 am I missing a trick? I do love your player profiling. Yes I know Rice isn't bad but the way he's made out to be you'd think he's standing heads and shoulders above DMs in the top 5 leagues.

Please can you kindly give me your objective assessment of Rice - not relative to our players but to other DMs in Europe.

Thanks Ed001.

{Ed001's Note - I think he is excellent, he is better positionally than almost all the rest and that is the main difference. Most of them are using mobility to chase back and make up for being caught out of position, Rice tends to be there already so does not look as busy or as flashy to the eye. I think he is one of the best. He is good on the ball, though he doesn't get as much chance as he should to display that playing for the Hammers. But to me, if as a Liverpool scout I had to recommend a replacement for Fabinho, he would be the one I would choose if money was no object.}

Rice imo is the best DM in the league.
Composed on the ball and senses and cuts out danger brilliantly.

{Ed014's Note - you’ll prob buy another Sancho instead then!

This thinking let's pay huge sum to fill one position hasn't worked out well for us.
Maguire, AWB, Fred, Pogba and Sancho (till now) have all been failed signings.
I would rather us sign 2 DMs and let them fight it out for 1 berth.
Competition makes the players better except in case for martial which him sulkier.
I think with a bit of coaching we can even go without new CBs as Rangnick can use of both of Tuanzebe and Mengi from next season on.

I live next door to west ham stadium, I often go to watch games with my son (unfortunately I think I'm losing him as a United fan but hoping a quick trip up to Old Trafford v West Ham next week will put him right??)

And Everytime I see rice, I come away thinking how good he is. He seems to pop up everywhere, great reader of the game, big, athletic, great passer and not afraid of holding onto the ball when needed. I would love to see him at United, he would be a fantastic signing and a high upgrade on what we have currently. His presence would also allow other players to be more creative.

Good assessment ed001.

Rice is superb as a DM especially when played as a 2 at the base. Seems to be positionally sound, has high technical ability and a good engine. He does remind me quite a bit of Carrick and possibly suffers with similar comments that people don't always appreciate what he does.
The big question for me in the current state of the team is, do we want to spend the money on him or do we need to use that money wider, if the later then we need to use the knowledge of RR to bring in cheaper players on the continent. Unfortunately we are not one £100m player away from winning the league so may need to let Rice go elsewhere.
We may be better all round using that money on a mix of Zakaria/ Kamara/ Bissouma/ Haidara etc.

My WHU work colleague absolutely raves about Rice - a fan of over 45 years he puts him in his top 3 of all time WHU players. Just an aside, he says Neves of Wolves is the only player to outplay him in recent seasons - match from about 8 weeks ago I think.

Anyway, our recent history of big name signings isn't great and Rice no matter how good is only one man - could lose form or get injured. If he is a Rolls Royce what's wrong with us getting a couple of top of the range Mercedes instead?

With all our supposed outgoings in summer -pogba/ Mata/ VDB/ Matic/ Perrira- would it be wiser to look at 2 or maybe 3 from Kessie, Zakaria, Haridra, Neves, Bissouma, Kamara, Touchameli (with Garner / Mebri) and not bid for Rice?

Like Ed001 says if money if no object then Rice is the one you go get. Plus being English is an added bonus in terms of HG quotas.

If money is an issue then one of Tchouameni or Boubacar Kamara are great options.

I love Rice, but I don't think he's a DM.

I would start from there if that means we will lack bodies upfront next year. Pogba Pereira Matic and maybe Dony will go. Buy Rice, Garner will come back and promote Hannibal if he is ready. After two years i would like to see a midfield of Rice and Garner at number 6, Scott Belligham Bruno Hannibal as number 8 or 10. And maybe that's the problem solved after so many years.

Thanks Ed001.

Hope the powers that be will give us a push for him.

{Ed001's Note - very welcome Yaz.}

I completely agree with Ed01 on Rice. I have said many times if I could have my wish the first thing we do is go all in for Rice and Bellingham as being the Midfield for the next 10 years.

Rice is also having a superb season and has consistently improved and got better which I think is important to see in a young player because it indicates he is going about things the right way.
