Chelsea fan i come in peace, just a few questions as I'm on the outside looking in, I grew up in the 90s and even though I don't really like utd I got a respect for them, for me the 2 best teams I've seen for a prolonged period of time are utd from 98-2010,and Barcelona from 08-2016,but anyway as a non fan looking in I like to keep things relatively simple so what's gone so wrong from finishing 2nd to now? What I'm trying to say is you finished 2nd last season and if you break it down you had the best keeper in the world 2/ 3 years ago,50 million right back, shaw seems decent, world's most expensive cb, then add one of the world's best cb in varne, again to me worst defensive units have won the league, I remember chelsea 2017, Moses, luiz, Cahill, Alonso etc, then I look at midfield and think wow I wish we had a pogba / Fernandes, then an embarrassing amount of forwards more than most teams in the world, Ronaldo, cavani, greenwood, Rashford, sancho, martial, unbelievable attackers a mix of experience and youth, in a nutshell what's gone so wrong from finishing 2nd then adding varne, sancho, Sancho, Ronaldo?, I think if most other teams in world football finished 2nd then added them 3 they would challenge if not win?, honestly just genuinely interested looks from the outside.

Agree0 Disagree0

Think you’re playing games here mate.

Not biting.

Honestly I'm really not, I don't watch a lot of utd unless they play a big game against top4 opponents, i'm honestly intrested, I was thinking about my own team chelsea thinking if we finish 2nd or 3rd, could we back that up with 2-3 world class players and challenge if not win the following season, and utd popped in my head because the end of last season beginning of this I genuinely thought you would challenge with the window you had, you added a world class cb, you added 10000% guarantee of goals and a world class potential winger, like I said not a wind up what so ever .

Aside from numerous long-term niggling injuries (Rashford, Pogba, Martial seem to have been injured for most of the season), I can only put it down to strength of mentality/ mindset. You can take the worst seasons of Real / PSG over the years where for all their talent, something just isn't clicking. Eventually they find a coach who turns things around and the talent combined with the positivity and confidence wins out. Utd haven't had both for a long time. They are more in the public eye than any other team arguably in the world, everything they say and do is scrutinised and criticised. Ole had a few years of the positive vibes but not the coaching, Ralph (supposedly) has the technical plan but hasn't yet got them playing as a unit.
Still confident things are going to improve. One defeat since his appointment and you can see the reaction. He needs some time, I would be more inclined to look in a month after a handful of more games when the winter window has closed.

Finishing 2nd last season was a bit of a false position, we by no means had the second strongest squad, Liverpool were hammered with injuries and Chelsea had Lampard first half of the season, plus it was a strange season anyway regarding crowds etc.

Four words, fur coat no knickers.

06 Jan 2022 10:41:07
What AJH said plus we are not getting as many lucky penalties as last season.

Also last season in between hoofing the ball and giving it away for fun Bruno was actually productive. This season he's just hoofing it and giving it away for fun.

Where you finish in a league is relative to who you are up against and not necessarily a vindication of how good a team you are.

Last season Chelsea were in shambles until Lampard left, by which time the gap was too great to close.

Liverpool had just about every defender injured and just imploded.

Spurs were being Spurs, with Jose being Jose and fighting the whole world.

Leicester had Brendan "Bottle job" Rodgers snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

So in reality only City were able to put up any sort of title challenge, they strolled to the title finishing 12 points ahead of us and with an additional +22 in goal difference to us.

We were the best of the rest when the rest collectively all had an off season for various reasons.

Very few of our wins were convincing, and we were painfully inconsistent.

We have a mishmashed squad of players bought for multiple managers with very different ideas of how to play football. We have bought poorly, often signing mercenaries looking for a last big pay day. While the mentality fragility of our signings would make wet tissue seem sturdy.

We have a group of players who on paper look good, are great for branding, but on the pitch lack the attitude, work rate and ability to work as a team. Far too many prima Donnas, and players who play within themselves if they get kicked, or if the ground had a frost, or if their Mrs has had a go at them for sticking their dick in the baby sitter.

We need a clear out, a plan and a structure. We need to pick players and managers who fit that profile rather than which shiny name will get the most social media clicks.

There are many reasons as my mates said. But there is another more significant I think: Last year we played to win, this season we play for Ronaldo to score. Welcome to Ronaldo show.

06 Jan 2022 13:14:23
Not sure we played to win last season. Defensive tactics and the birth of McFred, and late defensive substitutions when games we there for the taking.

06 Jan 2022 13:50:01
Played to win ???.

06 Jan 2022 14:10:28
Ken yes we played to win. We cared about winning at the end of the day, not caring about who will score the goals required. Now we care about Ronaldo scoring tap ins.

06 Jan 2022 15:32:12
Nonsense herrera.
Won nothing for 3 years. Played to win my ass.
Is been a holiday camp there for years.
Jose warned the club when he left keane has said it for 2 years.
The players have been destroyed due to neglect lack of know how and professionalism by ole.
The habits they have are awful and they have to leave now to perform elsewhere.
Standards have been let fall to horrible low levels.
Greenwood has never played for a proper manager the only time he did he was caught with a whore in his bedroom on an England trip the arrogant little pillock. He knows no better ole has a holiday camp.
The club team was destroyed by ole the whole fabric of the club destroyed by a guy so far out if his depth he insisted on trying to build a team around players who didn't want to be there.
Under ole new contracts given to mata matic Jones Henderson lingard bailly and none of them had to play for a living. Signed awb world record fee maguire works record fee a 36 and 34 yo striker.
Ole ruined this club and set us back years.

06 Jan 2022 15:55:57
couldn't have put it better myself ken

clap emoji.

06 Jan 2022 19:02:53
Ken dodnt ole give martial a contract too?
How can you forget your fav player?

06 Jan 2022 19:10:59
You didn't understand and i am really shocked by that. If we won a trophy or not has nothing to do with that. What was clear was that players played to win and help each other on the pitch as much as they could. Not ideal, we were negative and pathetic but doesn't mean we DIDN'T play to win-and the proof is so many turnarounds. Now we try to help Ronaldo score rather win the game.
Whoever gets Ronaldo is the same. Him scoring is much more important than for the team to win. The same goes with Zlatan when we had him. I can't explain it better i am sorry.

06 Jan 2022 19:30:53
Ever make a mistake when you were 18 Ken?

06 Jan 2022 19:52:52
I understand you herrera mate I simply don't agree.

06 Jan 2022 13:50:01
Played to win ???.

06 Jan 2022 20:52:32
Caolan I make mistakes every day or most days.

My point was he has been around a dressing room full of plonkers ran by a manager with no standards and no knowhow. He knew no better at maguire should have been stopped of captaincy foolishness his arrest for brawling in the street.

Awb thrown out of club for driving while banned with no insurance. No standards and the sort of un professional behavior that Paul merson would be proud of.

I'm a big Mason fan but he has only learned from those around him and a manager that in my opinion was totally incompetent in every facet of his job with standards in the gutter.

07 Jan 2022 05:39:36
Ole made fake promises to players over playing time and this in turn is causing toxic atmosphere.
Overpaying for average players and poor coaching have left us in disarray.
