Let's discuss something mildly United related at least today.

So what does everyone make of today's rumour that Bayern Munich are considering Dean Henderson as the long term successor to Manuel Neuer?

On a wider point, two years ago DDG and Neuer were the only two names you seriously considered when naming the worlds best keeper.
Now both are still young for a goalkeeper. Yet both have slipped down in the conversation when naming the worlds best. Allison, Oblak, Ter-Stegen and even Ederson are names often considered before DDG and Neuer. With young keepers such as Onana or Donnarumma coming through what does that mean for DDG and Neuer?

Do United fans feel Henderson is the answer for when DDG leaves? And when should that transition happen?

{Ed001's Note - Neuer has a wrist problem that means he will probably never be at his best again.}

I know Ed001, its a sad way for a top keeper to end his career.
What's your opinion of DDG and Dean Henderson?

{Ed001's Note - de Gea is coming back to something like his best, but the game has moved on and he is just not as good at using the ball as he is at keeping it out of the net. Still great though.

Henderson is going to be top class. I think he does need to leave as he is not going to displace de Gea though.}

Ed001, I agree on DDG, best shot stopper in the world, average with the ball at his feet, average at best with high balls into the box, not great at communicating/ commanding his area. I feel he will go a similar way as Casillas were he'll decline early for a goalkeeper as his reflexes will be the first thing to decline with age which will have the biggest impact on his only world class quality.

I find myself torn with Henderson. The lad looks like he will become a top player and a more rounded player than DDG. I would definitely make him first choice if DDG were to leave.
However, at the moment DDG is better, so its hard to play Henderson and have DDG on the bench.

What is most important though is to make sure the lad doesn't spend time on the United bench. He needs to be playing every week.

If that means a loan or we sell him with a buyback clause then that might be the best option.

{Ed001's Note - Sheff Utd is a great place for him to develop. Gets plenty of chance to develop his shotstopping but also they play with the ball at their feet a lot so he can develop that too.}

ED001. If a £100 million pound bid came in for DDG, would you sell him and give Henderson a chance?

{Ed001's Note - yes, simply because de Gea would probably lose focus if a big offer came in. Plus there is so much needed to do in the rest of the team, Henderson is good enough in the Prem, so why not? You don't improve by standing still and you need a keeper who is better on the ball to take that next step.}

MH if a 50-60m bid came in I would take the hands off and promote henderson keeping romero as a back up/ mentor to the lad. DDG, Imo has shown signs of decline over the last 2 seasons due to contract wrangles and confidence or lack of. Still good keeper but his value will steadily decline from hereonin.
ed001 i think he lost focus 2015 tbh.

Hatter as good as DDG has been I'd snatch anyones hand off who offered 100m. I'd probably accept anything north of 60m for DDG if I'm honest. I just don't think he will have the longevity. He's 29 now, I expect he has another 3-4 years at the top but slowly dropping down the peaking order. I would imagine by 33 he will not be considered a top 10 keeper anymore.

Shappy, Cookyman, ED001

I agree. Another thing to bare in mind, is that selling DDG would also help towards the FFP in regards to wages.

It's quite unusual for a club to have 3 top goalkeepers on their books.

DDG was never and never will be a great goalkeeper but he is the best shotstopper. All the others have other qualities that DDG unfortunately lacks. I still think that Romero is the better goalkeeper. Long term Henderson should be the ideal replacement for DDG and as Shappy said, i will take the best that offer comes in for him now as he has been on the decline for a couple of years now. GKs usually peak at or after 30, DDG is on a reverse trend.

Shan,

Goalkeepers can be at their peak I to their 30s. Top keepers like Schmeichel, VDS, Buffon, Kahn, Seaman were still world class at 34/ 35. VDS was great when he was 40.

20 Nov 2019 16:19:09
De gea never a great goalkeeper? About 2 years ago he was widely regarded as the best in the world. If that doesn’t make you a great player I don’t know what does.

20 Nov 2019 18:24:54
Caolan there's a difference between a goalkeeper and a shot stopper. He is the best shot stopper without a doubt but does he command the area, can he pick out a pass, does he come out for crosses? The answer is no. This is where he falls behind the others.

Hatter, that's what i said isn't it. They usually peak at or after 30.

moved on to slagging one of the best goalkeepers that the prem/ world football has seen. he might not have had a good 12 months but he is a world class goal keeper that hit a dip.

peoples minds must be foggy. for practically 4 years he carried us.

20 Nov 2019 20:47:05
Bolger he has been great for a long proud at United.
I think he was for a brief period the best in the world. For a long time the best in the epl.
He has negotiated a superb contract and won't be in a rush to move anywhere.
To me this season Has seen him return to better form.
I think Henderson will be englands no1 soon enough. i'd love to see him replace ddg at United at some stage. Is that not what we all want academy players coming through?

21 Nov 2019 03:36:47
Wheres the slagging bolger? Did i say anything wrong there? You want to tell me he is great at crosses or commanding the area. When you look at goalkeepers for Man Utd only in the PL era, DDG would still be behind Schmeichel and VdS. So he still has work to do before being categorised as a great goal keeper. And literally carrying us obviously because we have been so bloody poor also partly because DDG doesn't have the presence to organise his defence. I am not slagging him. But for me he isn't the best goal keeper out there.

21 Nov 2019 04:35:16
I would prefer us to do something similar to what Chelsea did when they had Cech and Courtois.
That is extend Henderson's contract, loan him again to another club and gradually ease out De Gea.

It would be a healthy competition. De Gea will be aware that Henderson is knocking the door which would keep him on the toes.

21 Nov 2019 14:46:24
I would loan him out again next season preferably to Sheffield if they stay up then the summer he comes back offload either de Gea or Romero.

21 Nov 2019 15:43:45
Shan by your standards how many great “goalkeepers” are there out there? At the end of the day it’s about keeping the ball out of your goal. Regardless of how you do it.
