Towards the end of last season, we didn't score a lot of goals did we? We have players that we think will make an impact and Mason's pathway would have been a lot more difficult if we had another forward.

“For me, I believe that Mason is going to be playing and involved a lot - and when he is he will score goals. ”ole
It's great we are going to give youth a chance imo .
A lot of people say give youth a chance, what they really mean is spends millions on big name players.

Jred

I think Greenwood has a real talent, however do you not think he is now under immense pressure to score goals due to the dearth of other goal scorers. At his age it can be detrimental, even the great Cristiano didn’t have that level of pressure. I want youth given a chance but how will he feel under the weight of expectations, he might flourish but it might destroy him.

09 Aug 2019 12:42:01
Hes 17, he is a kid and because we haven't got many options now, I can see a lot of pressure being put on those shoulders. It's all well and good when he scores a few goals but it's when things aren't going his way, fans forget his age and criticise his performances (see rashford)

I think he is a quality young player and I'll be delighted to see him get a few games but I am worried for him as i think it's a bit unfair to expect too much too soon.

Ole could do well by managing expectation a bit better with his words.

09 Aug 2019 12:43:03
I think it would be pretty bold to start Greenwood on Sunday but I think Ole might do it. Martial central, Rashford on the left, Lingard as the 10 and Greenwood on the right.

Signings are exciting, there is no doubt about that but seeing a young player come through is in my opinion one of the best things for fans of any club.

09 Aug 2019 12:51:16
Great to hear.
The young lads will give everything on the pitch.

09 Aug 2019 12:52:38
You got to give it to him. He knows what to say to the press. You don't get any negative feeling or have to listen to constant moaning on things. Good guy Ole. Listening to him sets the positive mood to look for the Chelsea game. :)

09 Aug 2019 12:56:58
I can see Greenwood starting on Sunday on the right of a front 3.

Martial, Rashford, Greenwood with Lingard or Pogba behind, depending on who plays in midfield.

So much pace and movement. If we get off to a good start we might even see Martial get into it.

{Ed025's Note - martial has to step up to the plate this season wazza, he is a very talented footballer but needs to show more this term or you have to get rid mate..

09 Aug 2019 13:19:39
Redman
He is under less pressure than rooney, giggs and owen at that age, if he has what it takes he will make it if not he won't .
Maybe we shouldn't give him a chance and just do what city done with sancho and sell him?

09 Aug 2019 13:24:47
jred its one thing giving youth a chance and another to basically expect them to replace a guy who at his worst still gets you 10-12 PL goals a season.

09 Aug 2019 13:42:21
Jred, you misunderstood most of the posts re buying players. I said yesterday and today that I'm happy to see Greenwood given a chance. I think the front three will score if we had the supply.
What we don't have, is a midfield to supply them, and I'm afraid we have to spend millions to buy midfielders, there is no alternative.

09 Aug 2019 13:51:00
I done a long ish post that seems to of gone missing maybe it will turn up .
Csm
He wasnt first choice under ole, rash is and martial looks to be back up so to replace lukaku, right or wrong your replacing a third choice striker .
I like lukaku but he won't score goals if he isn't in the managers plans, 3 league goals since ole came in in December.
I would rather have someone like mason getting minutes of the bench than someone like mandukic.
If you want to give youth a chance give them s chance, if not sign big names to sit on the bench in front of them.

09 Aug 2019 14:10:40
Fair enough jred I can agree with that. Midfield will be the problem though.

09 Aug 2019 14:22:08
The only way would would have needed another forward would be if both lukaku and sanchez left. We are well stocked. With rash martial and greenwood all of whom can play wide too.
None of them are proven consitent goal scorers in fact none of them have started 50 games as a striker so it is a risk but if ole is backing them i have to accept that and hope he is right and the risk pays off.

09 Aug 2019 14:25:55
well what i've got from Ole's press conference is that Greenwood is going to start on sunday and i'm very happy about it, Martial, Rashford and Greenwood that's a very pacey attack, surely pogba and Mctommy start as the 2 midfielders but who is going to be the other is my question will he go for Lingard, mata or pereira? defense well we all know our back 4 now, Shaw, Maguire, Lindelof and Young. haha joking Wan Bissaka.

09 Aug 2019 14:35:28
jred rash and martial make 2 of the front 3, the problem isn't that we didn't buy a striker to replace lukaku it is that we didn't buy anyone to replace lukaku, so who is the third player who gets the goals. The 500k man has scored 3 PL goals in his 2 years at united, lingard's crossed the 5 goal mark in the league once in his career, mata's is done at the top level for most part, expecting greenwood to come up with the goods is just asking too much. And that's without including the fact that if anything happens to pogba, rashford and martial are going to have big problems as we have no creativity outside of him.

This whole let's give talented kids a chance rather than buying good players for big money all sounds great on paper but people forget that kids are not consistent, they blow hot and cold. A team cannot ebb and flow in terms of performances, it has to be consistently good or manager loses the job.

Everyone remembers class of 92, they just forget that gary neville had schmeichel, bruce, pallister and irwin around him to cover for him if he made mistakes, giggs and beckham had cole and cantona helping them out. Expecting kids to perform miracles never ends well.

09 Aug 2019 14:52:52
With the rise of social media, most kids these days are under a lot more pressure than the youth of the past.

I don't think Redman was advocating for some 'big name' signing. Just that the kid will be under an incredible amount of pressure and with that, poor performances might come, resulting in so called 'fans' of the club to direct criticism at him.

Sancho is a completely different scenario, unfair comparison IMO.

09 Aug 2019 15:01:51
CSM
exactly pal, some people don't want to give the kids a chance .
You say about the 500,000 a week man then say we should buy good players for big money .
Maybe buying good players for big money sounds good on paper

If you want to give "kids" and let's be honest we are talking about 1 kid here mason you need to give him some minutes not buy a big name to sit on the bench .
People say give the kids a chance but when it comes down to it actually want big name signings . Even tho there is no guarantee with them either .
People post like every signing is risk free and will 100% work out.

Like I said in my OP.
It's great we are going to give youth a chance imo .
A lot of people say give youth a chance, what they really mean is spends millions on big name players

Maybe it won't work out but maybe if we sign someone that won't either?

09 Aug 2019 15:16:21
Why was sancho different, young lad bags of potential, wasnt going to get a chance at city. So left and with in 6 months was a 100 mil player .

Let's imagine 12 months ago we have a young lad like sancho sat on the bench . Should we play him.
Odoi at chelsea has expectation on him,
Yer so called fans might direct criticism at them, what's new look at the stick martial rash shaw have got . That's football he will need to be able to handle that.
But if you want to give youth a chance then give them a chance .

09 Aug 2019 15:54:11
Sancho is London born and raised. Moved to city when he was 14/ 15, was there a couple of years.

I believe he was selected to go on a pre season tour at 17 and decided to opt out of that and instead choose to go to Dortmund. Man City I believe try quite hard to convince him to stay assuring him of playing time. Big decision that has paid off.

On the other hand you have Mason Greenwood, joined the club at 6 and has steadily risen through the club. He has been given ample chances right up until now as he was brought on the pre season tour. Manchester United boy through and through. Different scenarios, hence the reason why I feel it's unfair. You just tried to simplify it by using their age and game time.

Again, I think everybody would be very happy to see Mason get chances. There is just the fear that unfair expectation will be put upon his shoulders. United, through their amateur tactics in the transfer market have created this situation.

Terrible that some of us are actually concerned about him lol.

09 Aug 2019 16:03:59
Jred i agree with that.
If samchez and lukaku had left i'd have been happy to take in an older head ( the likes of vardy or mandzukic) for a season or 2 to provide extra cover. But i'm very comfortable that greenwood can cover Lukaku.
Striker options are rash martial sanchez and greenwood.
Left james rash martial sanchez chong gomes
Right james rash jessie greenwood chong gomes
10 mata jessie sanchez gomes
Largely unproven some need time as its their first season
A couple need to rekindle prior form like sanchez and jessie
A couple need to deliver in their 3rd and 4th season. Rash and martial are now 1st picks they need to justify that. They have paid their dues. Its their time now. They need to grasp this wonderful opportunity they need to improve and keep improving.

09 Aug 2019 16:26:42
Lukaku did leave Ken.

09 Aug 2019 16:39:32
Ken exactly Greenwood could very well be 4th choice striker, personally I would like to see him get minutes of the bench, certainly ahead of some fancy name like mandukic on a last pay day .
The lad is still a kid there shouldn't be any expectation on him . All though you will always get a few complaining and expecting him to be a world beater straight away .

09 Aug 2019 16:37:03
There is a big difference between giving youth a chance - i. e. gradually integrating them into the first team where they can provided backup to and learn from a core of experienced players - and expecting a 17 year old with almost no experience at the top level to replace the club’s highest scoring attacker over the last two seasons.

The plan was to replace Lukaku when he was sold, but we prioritised getting an extra few million over having enough time to ensure the squad didn’t suffer.

09 Aug 2019 16:39:29
Its a lot to put on a 17 year old. Its why I'd have taken mandzukic. Someone who would be an option of the bench and an experienced plan b but not someone who's going to be around long enough to block off chances.

09 Aug 2019 17:58:00
I am not saying he is the same quality at the same age or will he reach the same level, but how old was Rooney on his Everton debut? He was good enough.

09 Aug 2019 18:26:18
If he is good enough he is old enough .
I don't thinking one is putting pressure on him the lad is only 17 and just starting out the pressure to score goals is now on rash martial linders pogba etc and it's time them boys stood up .

I like lukaku, I think he will score goals where ever he goes but it isobvious that he was no longer first choice under ole .
Martial and rash would of been ahead of him in the pecking order, so we haven't sold our first choice striker we have sold our 3rd choice .
So I'm not sure how many minutes lukaku would of got but I would rather them minutes went to someone like Mason than someone like mandukic.
Mason will be behind a number of players this season I would of thought and will get limited minutes even less if we buy another striker to sit on the bench in front of him.
And that's the thing I don't think we would of bought a striker to walk into the first 11, it would of been to sit on the bench .
I would rather we give youth a chance than buy big name has been to sit on the bench . If you want to give youth a chance you need to give them a path to the first team not block it .
I don't know if he is ready for it but if ole and the coaching staff think he is then I think they should give him the opportunity.
Reading the page obviously most are actually against given youth a chance .
They seem to say " give youth a chance " until it actually gets to the point of given youth a chance .

09 Aug 2019 18:31:37
Angle they are both young players o e had his route to the first team blocked, 6 month later he was a 100 mil pound player.
Regardless of the player tho the fact remains, if you want to give youth a chance give them a chance, when is the right time?
People say give youth a chance then complain when we don't sign star names to sit on the bench.

Ole and co are probably in a good position to judge . Was gomes not also looking for a move away due to first team chances?

09 Aug 2019 18:32:12
Mort he would of blocked his chances this season, and then people would want him replaced next season .
At some point if your going to give youth a chance you actually have to give them a chance .
I'm amazed how many people say give youth a chance, until it happens .
Danny
I don't think any one except yourself is expecting greenwood to replace lukaku, he will imo like you say be integrated into the team .
Rashford replaced lukaku as our main striker when ole took over . I like lukaku but not part of the managers plan, he scored 3 league since ole took over in december .

09 Aug 2019 19:22:51
I know ole but sanchez didn't so we don't need cover.
