Interesting that Brendan Rodgers has said publicly that we have not met Leicester's valuation of Maguire.

The deal seemed good as done a week ago.

Could this be a case of Leicester trying to sign a replacement before announcing Maguire is leaving? That way they won't get quoted high prices as selling clubs will know they have a big chunk of money coming in from United.

Either way, I just hope we can sign him up asap so he can begin to settle into our defence.

Agree0 Disagree0

It may well be a tactic of Leicester to get the most they can from United? Which if it is, they can't be blamed at all, United have shown we're daft enough to pay over the odds for players over the past few years.

Alternatively, it might be United messing Leicester around and trying to knock down the price?

Ultimately, it looks a lot like the AWB deal, prolonged but will likely eventually get done.

Weggy i think if Leicester go asking for any cb at the moment I'd say there is a good chance the selling club will have heard that maguire might be leaving and Leicester Jane a chunk of cash coming their way.
This is a case of a ckub knowing the player wants to go.
Knowing they will probably sell but don't want to lose a very important player to a rival even for a record fee
Knowing that the longer it goes on that united may go elsewhere
They are not just going to bend over and be complete submissive.

#Dropinterestinmaguire
Drop interest in Maguire. Who'd win or lose, you decide?

If utd are able to get someone Like Diop instead. Arguably a better player with EPL experience as well. Probably, marginally cheaper and definitely younger.

If Leicester hold on to their "prized" defender. They may miss out on an already ridiculous amount supposedly being offered. But they will not need to find a replacement.

If Utd were to get either of Dias or Milenkovic. No EPL experience, overall seen as better CBs than Maguire and not as expensive.

If utd end up messing up this CB business and are left with same CBs as last season. (I hope not! )

This whole negotiation tactic of starting off with bids that they know full well are not going to be accepted is appalling. Leicester have money, have a very good squad, decent manager. They don't need to sell. Gone are the days of Man Utd rolling into town and cherry picking your best player.

It's a waste of time. If Leicester are firm on their asking price, then pay it or move on. Reports of us putting in derisory bid for Bruno Fernandes. It just pisses clubs off. These two signings should have been sown up. We have had a free run at both of them and both of them would improve our first 11.

I think Ed and the management staff may be getting blinded by Dybala or Bale and that's why we haven't gone in and secured Bruno.

I know this isn't football manager but we should have had a plan going into this window and relentlessly tried to follow it all the while we're low balling clubs with stupid offers as the transfer window edges closer every day.

@mbd
Diop "Arguably a better player" than Maguire? I don't think there's much of an argument there at all.
Dias and Milenkovic "overall seen as better CBs than Maguire". We wouldn't be getting a better player, we MIGHT be getting more potential.

Granted, I don't think Maguire has proven himself to be world class, however he has played better, at a higher level, for longer.
Other 3 have age on their side so could become superb players, don't get me wrong but I doubt many would agree that they are BETTER player right now.

01jamham. How many years has Maguire "proven" himself as a top centre back? I would say at Hull he showed potential, but he was far from a top CB. At Leicester he has been very good for 2 seasons, not quite world class but very good. He is also 26 turning 27 this season. So is hardly a rookie. He has played 4-5 years in the EPL.

Has he got much more growth in him? Can he get to that world class level?

Milenkovic, Dias and Diop have all had very good seasons, arguably as good as Maguire has had. However, all of them are 22/ 23 years old and have much more growth in them. All of them could potentially become world class in a year or two.

So I think it's fair for people to ask is it worth paying 20-30m less for a player who is close to Maguire's ability currently but with more scope to be better than him in the not too distant future.

cant believe no ones triggered aulderwelds release clause.

24 Jul 2019 12:35:24
Age is against Alderweirald. No Champions league means he could ask for huge wages.

Dias and Milenkovic are risks coming from other leagues.
Diop is rusty and not that great on the ball.
That leaves Maguire as the safest option.

24 Jul 2019 12:49:21
Its all very well saying get Dias or milenkovic instead but has anyone considered that they don't want to move or move to united? Also we have a young centre back who could be great. One of those two would only get in his way.

We enquired for diop and got told a price close to maguires.

24 Jul 2019 14:52:14
Personally I think we should walk away from the transfer. I think it would also send a message out to other clubs we negotiate with in future.

{Ed002's Note - Clubs have no interest in any "message" Manchester United have.}

24 Jul 2019 15:03:11
i would take auldiweild if the 25mill is still the buy out, forget paying 80 mill for maguire and let tunzuabe learn his craft off auldiweild and lindelof for a couple of seasons. if he progresses and becomes the defender we hope then great. auldiweild still got at least 3 good years left in him and i rate him as good as if not better than maguire. as for wages spurs are not known for silly salaries so i don't think he would be looking at asking for stupid money.

24 Jul 2019 15:25:43
Very well put Shappy!

Mort, the unknowns regarding Dias and Milenkovic are understood, but has Maguire made his intentions of a move to Utd clear? Diop price maybe can be negotiated as was AWB's.? .

24 Jul 2019 15:41:08
Mumbles, is the whole point of negotiations not to go in low, and meet somewhere in the middle? Not that i know anything about negotiating, other than on Football Manager.

24 Jul 2019 15:59:38
My point is that you cannot say any of those 3 are better players than Maguire, who has delivered over a number of seasons in the Prem. (a higher standard of league) . We also get to see every players error or flaw in their game scrutinised by the Sky Sports team, which is why I think people get so excited about foreign youngsters. We don't get to hear about their ok games or any mistakes

I agree that we will pay more for Maguire; and I too question whether he is worth reported fee.

I'd like to think we were trying to sign the best young talent from across Europe as well, and the players you mention probably fall into that bracket, however there has to be an element of balance and experience to a squad, especially in defence. We have Shaw (24) Lindelof (25) and Wan-Bissaka (21) currently as assumed starters.

24 Jul 2019 16:37:41
Nou Camp, if you're selling a car priced 70 grand and offer 40, you're going to tell me to piss off. There's an art to negotiations but starting off with bids that are insulting isn't a good start.

24 Jul 2019 17:30:07
No Stevie. That is not the way to negotiate. I do it for a living and would not be doing well with that tactic.

24 Jul 2019 17:32:00
Shappy none of the 3 of them have any epl experience except for milinkovic who was gotten rid of by city.
Dias is the only one of those that had a good season last year.

24 Jul 2019 18:13:52
Ken, you must be older than you look. It appears you're getting a bit forgetful.

Issa Diop plays for West Ham, and West Ham were in the EPL last season.

Diop had a very good game against us prompting Mourinho to praise the scout who found him.

So Diop does have EPL experience. So it is only two of those three who in fact have no EPL experience. 😘.

24 Jul 2019 20:35:19
That's correct shaps.
But that is the jose you told us knew nothing about cb's isn't it😘.

24 Jul 2019 21:33:03
I think the only reason we are in for Maguire than other CB targets is his ability to win headers in either side of the box.
Used to be Vidic and Cristiano before.
Smalling is probably our only centre back who is good in the air.
Rojo is short, Jones average, Lindelof and Tuanzebe seem more technical and Bailly is rash.
None of them are good headers of the ball.
Also we might see Lukaku leave who wins a decent amount of headers both sides, and maybe one of Pogba and Matic which would only leave the current squad with let's say Matic (who isn't a good header of the ball but still tall), McTominay and Smalling (who isn't a starter) .

I think Maguire fits the bill and the requirement we have more than other players available in the entire market.
Maguire, Tuanzebe and Lindelof who are excellent with the ball on their feet and 2 of Smalling, Jones, Rojo and Bailly is a very decent CB set.

24 Jul 2019 23:27:20
Not rojo he needs to be sent on loan or something. He is a danger to himself let alone everybody else.

25 Jul 2019 08:50:57
rohanarora8, have you seen the aerial presence of Diop and Milenkovic?
