SAF used to say there is no value in the market and seeing some of the prices being waited for a variety of players never has that been more true. Madrid and Juve May want Pogba but they both have players they can’t shift so it looks like they can’t afford him. The fee for Maguire is ridiculous especially when you see De Ligt went for a lot less and we know others are available for lower fees. We are holding out for a higher price for Lukaku, a player who doesn’t figure in Ole’s plans.

There is value to be had if you shop carefully but it is getting harder and harder. Surely the way forward is youth development. I know everyone does it but how well do they do it, as clearly some do it far better than others. I’m not just talking playing skills but psychology, education, lifestyle. Instead of buying a player for £x00 million we should be investing massively in facilities and youth development with a view to growing our own. Part of this (nods head to Red Man) is having a solid identity and culture. This is how we behave, this is how we do things round here, if you want to join then you need to fit with in. Under SAF and the British core I think we had that but sadly it has been ripped apart. We can buy as many big names as we want but it’s all a bit random and disjointed.

The current (apparent) approach focusing on young energetic players is welcome and hopefully lessons have been learned. Sadly, I doubt it.

AJH

SAF said there was no value in the market when players like Aguero, Hazard, Silva were available. The reason was more likely that the financial support was not there from above. When they sold Ronaldo in 2009 it propped up the financial accounts, enabling a profit rather than a loss.

Thanks for the nod. For years I have banged on about defining a strategy based on what the club want to be. When they brought LvG in, I recall he had been the one at Barcelona who actually wrote down and defined what Cruyff had envisaged. Maybe, I thought, Woodward would use that strategic knowledge to define the future, instead LvG’s sacking demonstrated there was no greater thought process behind the appointment, meaning it was very questionable judgement appointing him. Any business needs to have a direction, any part of the business needs to know that and work together towards the aim, the strategic aim. We just lost that direction when SAF retired, it seems it was all driven by him and not those above him.

A British core, a youth system is part of our culture but until the strategic aim is as one from the Glazers down we will remain disorganised and likely unsuccessful.

I wrote in at the end of last season that we should rip this squad up and start again with youth. That was me being incredibly angry with how we finished the season, coupled with the fact that some of our players are happy to collect their high wages, have the Man Utd crest next to their instagram picture, but not actually deserve to play for our club one bit.

I am happy with the direction that Ole seems to going. We need to veer away from signing players that are surplus to requirements at other top clubs. We players that are hungry and want to succeed and make the step up.

Even with the class of 92 emerging, Fergie still had the squad packed full of British transfer record signings, old pros, continental flair.

If you have aspirations of winning trophies then the academy isn't enough alone. For teams lower down the division it is a no brainer. 9 games and Longstaff could make Newcastle a lot of money. Ajax have made more money off De Jong and De Ligt then the last 10 season in the Eredivise.

We have some awesome prospects coming through the pipeline. If Ole can get 2 or 3 into our squad then he has pulled up trees. But the squad needs to get back to getting players that want to make the step up. Not players that Madrid no longer fancy.

Make no bones about it. The squad we have have underperformed individually and as a team for years. If Ole can get an extra 20% out of our better player, and add a few more to the team, realistically we should be aiming for top 3.

The kids are the future, but you also need some wise heads in the squad to guide them.

But is De Ligt acually worth the reported £77m fee? Nowhere near it, Maguire won't be much more than either, though both are very overrated and overpriced.

Well said ajh, I also think we need to get away from what a player cost there are far to many variables.

Maguire and de ligt are in very different circumstances, Leicester have epl money behind them probably don't want to sell there best player and have if tied to a long term contract . Why would they sell him for a fair price?
United may feel that for various reasons paying x amount is justified.
Every transfer is a gamble there are no sure things, but there is always bigger picture .
United may feel that to improve the team they need to address certain areas with players that have the correct attributes and complement the other players. To buy a, b, c and d that may cost 250mil, but if that combination may well be worth more than the sum of its parts . Which is how you build a team .
A player may be worth 20 mil to one team but 40 to another.

Got to say is ole not moving us towards what is considered our core values? And people want him sacked.

Great thread boys enjoyed reading all that 👍.

I would just like to add,

Daniel James and Wan-Bissaka are both very good young talents.

Youngsters thrive in teams that are on the up, not teams that need to be rebuilt.

Perfect example, Trent Alexander Arnold. Young players need a stable squad environment to improve.

Take the Fergie Era when Beckham, Scholes etc hit the ground running.

To ask youngsters to improve your current status is a recipe for disaster. Wan-Bissaka has a massive transfer fee hanging over him. If he does not deliver it is bedtime.

Very good post jred.
There are only 2 valuations that matter. The price the selling club want and the price the buyers are prepared to pay.
If the decision is player x can fix problems in the team and compliment others and is seen as a good fit by those that make the decisions then he is worth more than what can be described as his "market value"
If player x and the team succeed his percieved market value is likely to increase.
Lots of players move for big money and kots for little money. There are no guarantees or very few anyway.
Barca. Dembele couts and malcom semedo nearly 350m none have been a huge success and are all for sale.
Neymar draxler di maria 300m all for sale at psg
We have a list of our own.
Build a strong core and base and add to it with flair if required or strength or muscle piece by piece.
Get the core right get the principles right and you have a much better chance.
I like what's happening with a cb and at least 1 more cm 2 preferably we should be in a really good spot.
The pogba situation needs to be classified sooner rather than later as that's the only potential de-railer i see to upset pre season.

Max,

Once again you’re posting negative nonsense on our page about things that you clearly want to happen not what actually will happen. Give it a rest mate.
