What would people think about putting in a bud and trying to sign Tierney from Celtic.

I have my reservations over Shaw. He definitely needs someone of quality to fight over the lbs position.

Young maybe our backup left back, as other areas need strengthening first. I think Tuerney could be a bargain signing at £25-35 million.

ED007 what's your opinion on Tierney?

{Ed007's Note - KT's already a cracking player and I'll be sad to see him go but he needs to move on now for the sake of his own career and it's development. Celtic fans REALLY want him to stay for 10 in a row but in two years time his stock will have fallen further and he might need to go down the VVD/Wanyama route of joining a Southampton before catching the eye of the bigger clubs again rather than straight into a big club like Arsenal.
I am surprised that Utd haven't shown any interest after admiring him for years and I know that he would have chosen to join you over anyone else when it was time to leave Celtic. I reckon that the rumoured £25 million will prove to be a bargain of VVD to Southampton proportions.}

I agree ED007. I think he is better than Shaw. I don't think Luke Shaw will progress any further than the level he is at now. His positional awareness is poor.

It would have been better to allow Young to leave and sign Tierney imo.

Having solid fullbaks is just as important as having solid CBs.

{Ed007's Note - We've also got a young Norwegian CB called Kristoffer Ajer who just turned 21 and he is going to cost someone serious money (in Scottish terms) in a few years time if he keeps going the way he is. His style of play is very similar to VVD and he's already a better than VVD was at that age imo.}

Ajer is an outstanding player. Played a bit in midfield too if I remember correct.

Utd were interested in Tierney last few windows. According the Scottish press, and according to radio Scotland and local radio all over Scotland, Tierney scoffed at Utd, Concentrating on progressing at Celtic. Now Lennon back in charge. He’s open to a move.

Madness that we haven't shown interest.

But the coach and hierarchy must rate shaw and want him to be LB for the future. It wouldn't make sense to go for Tierney if that's the case.

But I think he is a far better player than shaw.

I think it comes down to priorities.

Yes we do need some quality competition for Shaw at LB. However, we currently have Young and Dalot who can cover there if needed.

But do we need LB competition more than we need a top quality starter at CB?

Do we need LB competition more than we need first choice quality starters in both defensive midfield and creative midfield?

Do we need LB competition more than a first choice RW?

If Lukaku leaves will we need LB competition more than we would need quality competition for Rashford who is unproven as a starting striker?

There are 4-5 players for the first team we need more than someone to compete with Shaw.

This summer is about improving the first 11, next summer and beyond will hopefully be about building a competitive squad.

I always found it strange that even under Fergie, he preferred to see how players did in another league before going for them and paying a lot more than they would have done.

ED007 do you think some clubs prefer other clubs to develops players before trying to buy them as they want their finished article?

{Ed007's Note - Definitely buddy. Even more so today with fans demanding instant success and multi-million £ signings. These days you don't win the big prizes by taking your time to develop players and the team like Fergie done. At Utd's level (not just Utd but all the megarich clubs) where fans are up in arms when they don't win the league and reac the latter stages of the CL the "best" way to compete is to spend BIG money - whether it's the right way is another thing.
Everyone loves to see academy players coming through and becoming a star player for the first team but these days and especially at the top end in England and CL teams it rarely happens.}

That's a good summarisation shappy. They seem to be prioritising and rightly so. That's why it wouldn't make much sense punting for Tierney unless they wanted to sell shaw.

Shappy is bang on.
Shaw had a decent season last season very much improved. Still miles of his supposed full potential but is our clear no1. Dalot can cover thete so can young at a push so lb is not a priority for this window.
Tierny is a great young full back imo he will go on to be better than shaw but at the moment its not a priority so its poo prudent to pass on tierny sadly at this time in order to fix much more broken areas.
Great signing for arsenal at half the cost of awb it will prove to be a snip i'm sure.
