If we sign Fernandes and Maguire, as well as continuing to make other good decisions footballing wise, all of us will. see a marked improvement in team performance and trophies. Mark my words.

We need an English captain centre half, and creativity and goals from midfield from a Portuguese. We already have the homegrown wonderkid forward and mainland European center half.

Arnie,

What has where the player comes from got to do with the price of fish?

13 Jul 2019 10:22:35
There’s about 5 players in our squad worthy to wear the Man Utd shirt . More than two players needed and a good dozen need to be sold by the club. Good to see young lads coming in and building rather than short term fixes though.
Be few years I personally believe before we see trophies back at Old Trafford .
And no not being negative and all doom and gloom, I’m being a realist .

Jingoism is the stupidest part of facism.

Nationality ultimately is irrelevant. It would be good to have a strong core of British players, mostly because they don't tend to want to up and move to Spain after a couple of years. It gives you a chance to have a core of players for the medium to long term.

However, first and foremost they have to be good enough.

Also although it can be useful to have two players from the same country in the changing room initially to help them settle, long term they need to integrate with the whole squad. Having too many players from one specific country or region can create clicks in the dressing room. Much like at Arsenal under Wenger where you had a strong french contingent who mostly kept themselves to themselves.

Maguire would improve us, but he doesn't have the ability to lift us to where we want to be. He isn't a leader, and he has serious defensive lapses which he would need to iron out to make the step up. At 27 it's a worry that he hasn't done that already.

13 Jul 2019 10:41:47
Think Arnies original post was referencing Rio, Ronaldo and Rooney. Vidic as European centre half etc.

13 Jul 2019 11:03:59
I'm sure he was lauding a Portugese player and another from somewhere in mainland Europe I assume Lindelof. Where's the jingoism there? Or am I missing something.

13 Jul 2019 10:51:04
Finn,

Perhaps, you’ve done well to work that out from the post though!

13 Jul 2019 10:53:06
Shappy,

Nationality ultimately is irrelevant. It would be good to have a strong core of British players.

Shed some light on this please. Contradiction in one line.

13 Jul 2019 11:20:18
We already have an English captain - Ashley Young 👀

Although I’m not really sure what nationality has to do with it. As long as they communicate well and lead by example.

I’d sooner have Dias or Milenkovic over Maguire. Maguire would improve us but not by enough.

13 Jul 2019 12:04:00
What was wrong with the original post? He didn't say anything jingoistic. He was merely saying we need a strong core of Brirish players to compliment the foreign players, and i agree with that completely. British players by in large, understand the club and it's history and should form the basis of the team.

13 Jul 2019 12:06:25
United addict, I thought it was pretty clear.

Nationality is ultimately irrelevant, however, if we can have a core of British players that might have some benefits. But like I said ultimately it is talent and mentality not nationality that is the most important thing.

Shappy

I am interested to know the basis of why you think Maguire isn’t a Leader?

A key point about who we buy is that a leader on the pitch needs to be one of them, because we don’t have one at the club.

13 Jul 2019 12:25:16
I'm surprised how highly people rate dias.

13 Jul 2019 13:36:50
I get the english language Shappy however what i don't understand is how would having a british core be beneficial from let's say having a Congolese core. Afterall its the talent rather than the nationality.

13 Jul 2019 13:50:39
Red Man, he has never shown leadership qualities. He isn't very communicative, also I know someone both at Hull and Leicester who say he is more of a follower than a leader. He wasn't a leader for England last summer either.

Jred, I have watched Dias a dozen times this season at least. I regularly watch Benfica and Sporting when I can. So that's why I rate him. However, he was excellent for Portugal in the Nations League cup a couple of weeks ago, plus Ed002 highly rates him which I'm sure will sway some fans. Then of course for others he is just a sexy foreign name which is enough.

Maguire is a good player who would improve us, he just isn't worth anywhere near his asking price. He has great physical qualities, yet lacks the intelligence to be a great defender. As such he won't lift us to the level we need.

13 Jul 2019 14:19:06
United Addict, Have you ever moved away from your home country? Settling in, new language, new culture it can be difficult.

If we are to build a long term project, we need a core of players who will stay with the team long term. Obviously the most important aspect of that is they have the talent to be in the side long term.

However, most would say Pogba has the talent. Yet everyone would say your being foolish if you try and base your long term plans around a player such a Pogba.

British players rarely move abroad, they much prefer their home comforts. Sure there are the exceptions, but they are the outliers not the the rule.

So it COULD be beneficial to have a core of young British players who will more likely stay with the club over the next 5-8 years. Players who could be with the club at the start of the project hopefully right through to success at the end.

However, talent and mentality are the most important things.

13 Jul 2019 14:37:55
The rules re ‘Home Grown’ players is clear. A 25 man squad must contain 12, up from 8, of home grown players. 2 of which must be from the clubs academy. Perhaps this is what was being referred rather than jingoism?

13 Jul 2019 14:38:55
Shappy I disagree with you on dias and Maguire.

13 Jul 2019 17:35:38
Jred, which bit on Dias do you disagree with.

He's highly rated? Ed002 rates him? He was excellent for Portugal? I've watched him regularly? Or that some people might prefer him because he has a foreign name?

I'm not sure which bit you disagree with?

As for Maguire, what do you disagree with? That he would improve us?

14 Jul 2019 00:35:20
Shappy between Sms fenandes and dias you have watched over 50 games of potugese and Italian football.
Mate that's either gross exaggeration or you need to get out more mate.
I find that extraordinary. At least try watching them in the national stations you could be fluent I potugese and Italian by the end of next season and you will have done something worthwhile with the 75 hours of liver football you watch and that's before you scout the German french and epl games. 😂😂.

14 Jul 2019 08:10:37
Don't forget the Ukrainian games watched.

14 Jul 2019 21:44:52
