Reports are picking up about Milinkovic-Savic, I personally believe he will be a fantastic signing, physically suited to the premier league, young and has played at a high level for a few years now, could be a star for years to come.

would be a great signing. hope it happens. may have had an off season but he is still a great talent. great potential and ability.

Does that mean the move for Saul Niguez has failed?

Saul cheap alternative per Ed002.

Apparently Saul is a massive Atletic man and it sounds like it would be a challenge to get him. Ed002 also stated he would be very expensive.

SMS seems to be a more attainable player, but also seems expensive.

I think people need to remember that Saul is already playing for a CL side who are much closer to challenging for titles than us.

We would be asking him to leave the city where he has lived since he was 11, move to a different country, to a region hardly known for its tropical climate or vibrant social/ cultural scenes, and play for a worse side. The sole incentive for moving here is more money.

Savic seems a far more sensible target.

There is always more to a transfer than meets the eye. Real life isn't like football manager.

Firstly, Atletico Madrid would demand as much as 150m for Saul.

Secondly, from Saul's perspective currently a move from a UCL team to a Europa League team is likely to be seen as a step down. Plus I would imagine he would prefer to live in Madrid as opposed to Manchester. So persuading him to sign likely means offering him a huge wage. 250k+ I would imagine but that is pure speculation.

Whereas, SMS might see a move to United as a step up from Lazio. He might not be as settled in Rome as Saul is in Madrid. Plus his fee would likely be around 70-80m price bracket while on significantly lower wages than Saul would be.

So in a window where we need to sign at least three more players it might seem prudent to go after the cheaper and potentially easier transfer to complete.

Personally I think in this situation I would rather the club push the boat out and sign Saul, the player the club could have signed three and a half years ago for significantly less had the fans not pushed for LvG to be sacked. Hindsight hey.

I have concerns about SMS who is a supremely talented player but one who wants to push forward and play further forward than perhaps his skill set is best suited.

Both will be rather expensive, Saul Niguez being particularly difficult to take from Atletico and more expensive, i'd be very happy with either.

Well put Danny and Shappy, totally agree.

We need to be realistic in where we are. Unfortunately we are not the most attractive offering to players living abroad and already playing the CL.

Even during Fergie's days we struggled to sign certain players and that was with with the guarantee of CL football and a top class manager.
