Rumours of a reported deal for SMS intensifying, he would be the ideal Pogba replacement so I would love to see that happen.

Agree1 Disagree2

Ed stated that he is our backup option to Saul Niguez.

Hmmm I'm not so sure. He had a great season a couple of years ago. But seemed to regress last season.

Also if we do sign Bruno Fernandes then both he and SMS would want to play in the same areas of the pitch. Much like Pogba and Sanchez.

Good player, potentially a great one. But maybe not quite what we need right now.

Correct me if i am wrong but didn't ed say he's off to PSG?

Nonsense Shaps bruno and sms have totally different styles and attributes and don't play in same areas at all.

Ken, although they have different styles both play best between the midfield and the forward line.

Neither are best when played deeper, both are somewhere between a No.10 and a No.8. start slightly deeper then move into advanced areas.

So I think it's valid to say both want to play in the same areas of the pitch.

Like Silva, Silva and de Bruyne at City, Shappy?

MancMan, similar to how it is at City although De Bruyne often prefers to start deeper while Silva tends to stay more advanced.

However, it works at City for two reasons. Firstly, Fernandinho has been immense for City over the last few years arguably doing a better job than Kante. Kante is far better at breaking up play, but Fernandinho can pass forward with intent and can control the tempo of the game.
Secondly, City have fantastic wide players in Sterling, Sane, Bernardo and Mahrez. Who stretch the play to such an extent that there is space more centrally for two advanced midfielders to play in.

We don't have a world class holding midfielder to control the tempo and do the dirty work. And we don't have the quality of wide players who can create that space to accommodate two advanced midfielders.

So no unless we also sign a DM and two wide players of similar quality to those at City I can't see us being able to imitate their tactics.

Shappy sms does not play in the same areas as Fernandes at all . How many 90mins have you seen both play at club level?

09 Jul 2019 18:03:58
Ken, Fernandes about 12 times and SMS about 20.

I watch Sporting and Benfica games quite often as they have a habit of producing world class talent. I also watch Ajax, Lyon and RB Lipzig when I can as well. I also watch players who get linked to us like SMS.

I can tell you they both like to play on the edge of the final third, as the most advanced midfielder in their team.

SMS would be an average signing for us. He will be great at replacing Pogba as he turns up occasionally, prefers to do the fancy stuff and neglects his defensive duties bar a few headers in his box defending set pieces. Almost a like for like replacement for Pogba. However, Pogba has a higher ceiling and a much bigger ego.

Interesting stuff Shappy. I think getting a holding midfielder (or two! ) who can dictate play is really important for us. We suffer greatly for not controlling the midfield.
