There was a good debate down the page regarding whom the club should target for rebuild.
I agree with DLIB.
Pepe and AWB on the right would be a dream.
This duo would add unbelievable pace and power on the right and would instantly improve the team.

And although Maguire can be defensively suspect, he would also immediately improve the backline.

Since he can bring the ball out of defence, the whole midfield can push further up the pitch.

The likes of Smalling, Rojo and Bailly causes panic and confusion when they have the ball at their feet.
Due to this, the midfielders drop deep to collect the ball and spread the passes.
This delay will eventually reduce the potency of attack.
Opponents will get enough time to organize themselves.

We definitely need a ball playing CB, without a doubt. And as I have said many times Maguire would be an upgrade on what we have.

I just feel that for what he would cost you could buy two CB who are better defensively and have more potential.

Why spend 90m on Maguire when you could spend 25m on Alderweireld? Yeah he three years older, but he is twice the player Maguire is in every aspect bar heading. You could then spend the remaining 65m on someone like Dias, Diop or Milenkovic and be sorted both short and long term while also having more strength in depth.

Maguire is a decent player, but in no way is he worth even half of what we would have to pay for him.

Pepe, again is a great player. Or at least a player who has had one great season in the 5 years since he turned professional. That has to be a concern, is he that good or did he hit a purple patch. There are also rumours of him having a bad attitude, which if true have to be a concern. All of Bayern Munich, Juventus and PSG have had a look at him then said thanks but no thanks. Is that because of Lilles along price being too high, the player having attitude problems or they are concerned he isn't as good as last season would suggest? We don't know, and we can only speculate. Yet all three have turned away from a deal for some reason. That should set off alarm bells.

For that reason I feel the club should maybe give him a wide berth. If it's true that Lille want in excess of 70m for him then maybe leave him at Lille and see how he does next season. If he can repeat last seasons form then great, it won't push his price up that much if at all. Yet the club would know at least his form wasn't a one off season.

I don't think the club can afford to be spending big on players who could represent a gamble. After so many questionable transfers in the last 6 years, the decision makers can't afford to keep getting it wrong.

Why would Alderweirald prefer to move to us?
From being a UCL finalist to a team struggling for top 4.
The only reason would be money.
In 2 years we could probably have another high earner difficult to move on.

Think we need a defender who can actually defend first..

I find it embarrassing that professional footballers are not comfortable bringing the ball out from the back...
