I'm struggling to understand where these Fletcher rumours for Technical Director are coming from? Apart from he was at United, why him specifically? I can imagine Rio's PR team drumming up some interest and stories for him but the Fletcher rumour just seems bizarre to me considering all the ex players we have who could also be linked. He's not that long been retired also. Is it that inconceivable that some players prepare for life after football by doing their coaching badges, has Fletcher, like Van Der Saar gone and done a masters degree in sports and brand management?

Otherwise it just baffles me where the rumour has come from!

I don't think we should be looking at an ex player for this role. However, depending on what the role will entail I could imagine the fact that Fletcher came through our academy might be something that places him above other candidates. He does understand the inner workings from a players perspective from academy to first team. What benefit that could have depends on what his job would be.

Its not going to be the normal "director role" that normal clubs hire someone for anyway.

We may aswell add krusty the clown the the mix to go along side coco and Ronald.

Why appoint someone who understands the workings of the past? We should be appointing someone who will structure the workings of the future.

Red Man, how do you build for the future if you don't know what was done in the past? Understanding what worked and what didn't work previously and why, is the starting point of any future plan.

Shappy

We learn from history but have to build for the future. You can learn the structure as is, in fact that is what consultants do before designing a forward path, a forward strategy, the knowing how to implement it. If you bring someone in just to do the same old, nothing will change. We have to modernise with new ideas to face the football of now, not the 90’s. This is a fundamental problem and one which brings decline in many industries, the lack of willingness to accept change. It’s denial and we are in it.

That doesn't have to be someone who came through the club though shappy does it?

It would be nice if there was someone qualified who came through the club. But Darren Fletcher and Rio are certainly not qualified.

Its ridiculous to even have their names mentioned for these type of roles.

I can't believe that people are even considering it. It just shows our clear lack of knowledge when it comes to this.

Red man and Angel, I completely agree. I said in the first line of my reply that I don't think we should hire an ex-player for that sort of role.

I'm merely saying why the club might want an ex player for that role. I agree with Red man's analysis that you can learn the structure without ever having been involved with it.

Just pointing out why the might be looking for an ex player.

I know, I can see the half logic in it. But an explayer should only be considered if they are truly qualified to fill such a position. It would be a dream, much like the appointment of an explayer to the managers role.

But I am in fear that even though we have wandered down a troublesome road, it is only going to get worse.

The only positive I can take right now is that Woodward is making a rod off his own back. If this fails and it most likely will, Woodward and the decision makers will be directly in the firing line.

How do people get experience without doing it.

We've been trying for 4 years to bring someone in and have been turned down by practically everyone in European football because we haven't a clue or we're such a mess no one will touch us. Hence its ex players we're looking at.

It also depends on the role. If as Ed2 said all he's doing is coordinating scouting with what the manager needs how much experience is needed. If he's going to see potential signings to sell them United then an ex player is perfect.

We don't know what the job will be yet so let's leave the panic for another day.

Sometimes in life its not about what you know, it's about who you know.
