So a slight change of topic, with Valencia leaving this summer along with Herrera and most likely Mata as well who would be your pick for club captain?

A captain should be a player others look to for leadership, a player setting the standard. However, often I feel it now goes to the most popular or whoever is the most marketable or whoever has been at the club longest.

I would like to see it go to Lindelof, hard working pro who doesn't mess around off the pitch. Always gives his all, and has over come adversity after a tough start to his career. He is also the only player other than Ander and occasionally Young who will attempt to gee up his team mates when we go a goal down. He has fight in him, and we will need that moving forward. Young, Pogba or Smalling would be the wrong choice in my opinion for different reasons.

Lindelöf presuming no one better comes in.

Definitely agree on Lindelof.

The captain should always be a centre back or centre midfielder. The only one in the discussion is Lindelof.

Lindelof or Matic.

Mort, I don't agree that a Captain should play in a certain position. It's down to mentality and personality, not footballing skill set. I would agree that it helps if the Captain plays centrally as they are able to speak to most players that way and they will more than likely be in the thick of the action.

But there have been some great captains who have been full backs, forwards or even goalkeepers.

I don't agree with it going to forwards they don't see enough of the game and have enough with scoring. I didn't it was due to skill set just the communication factor. Full backs maybe but I think being centrally positioned is easier.

De Ligt 🙄.

It’s slim pickings. I don’t think anybody at the club is captain material but from the current crop it would be Lindelof.

I wouldn’t be against a new player coming in and taking the armband straight away. Toby would be a good candidate or a player of similar quality and experience.

Axel Tuanzebe, has captained at every youth level and if we don't sign a centre back in the summer, he is better than every defender at the club apart from lindelof.

Mort, What about Rooney, Cantona, Law or Chalton? Were they not good Captains despite being forwards?

What about Del Piero? Raul? Rivaldo? Totti? Kane? Messi? Maradona?

Some of these guys have Captained their sides to some of the biggest honours in world football.

I agree that for several reasons it might be preferable to have someone who can see the whole pitch. However, you captain isn't necessarily responsible for dictating play. He is there to lead the team by example, set the tone of the team.

Vidic and Keane were great captains, yet neither dictated play.

There are not many candidates. I think Young or Smalling will get it but neither should be near the first eleven in my opinion so shouldn't get it.

As others have said, Lindelof is about the only player in our defence who could be a good choice.i

I'll grant you Cantona. Rooney was a poor captain and Law and Charlton had it on seniority, same as some others on your list.
