Ronaldo wants to go down as the greatest ever. One measure of his superiority would be highest ECL goal scorer of all time. Not being in the tournament this year would open the door for Messi, who is also 2 years younger than him, to make inroads into that 16 goal lead. Ronaldo has won the ECL 5X whereas Messi has won it 4X, another potential lead that could evaporate, albeit unlikely. Messi has won more titles overall - Ronaldo is not going to catch him there - but then Ronaldo has scored more career goals but at a slightly lower goals per game rate. Could the younger Messi catch him up?

In short, Ronaldo's main goal right now is to try and establish himself as the undisputed best of all time. Being at United is a hindrance to him securing his legacy.

If Chelsea will take over his wages and give us 1/ 2 of what we paid for him last year, I'd snap their hand off. It would us with provide more funds for acquiring the sort of players who suit EtH's style and the longer term rebuild. If we're firing on all cylinders I think we could have a team that's capable of winning the Europa.

Messi best for anyone with a brain, Ronnie best goal scorer and athlete to play the game but Messi is the greatest ever football player.

Roonbest. Imposs to say who was the best ever player. Different eras throw up different challenges. The pitches of yesteryear were often mud baths not the manicured perfect playing surfaces they are today. Years ago the physical punishment handed out to attackers by defenders would today see numerous red cards every match.

Few of us alive today saw Pele in his pomp or Eusebio or Puskas or Duncan Edwards. How would they have fared in today's game? Also when comparing Messi and Ronaldo for the most part Messi has played in one of the best teams ever with a team built around him. Ronaldo was allowed to do his thing but arguably was more part of a team. Look how he dragged a decent Portugal team not full of worldies to championship trophies. Messi has never had the same impact at international level.
Ronaldo has triumphed in England Spain and Italy. Messi has hardly been a huge success in France.

So overall how do you define the greatest. To say Messi is definitely the best is too subjective.

Someone should explain the concept of a team game to him sometime.

Messi was an amazing player.
Better overall ability than Ronnie at peak but Barca’s Dr Fuentes and Messi hormone treatments as youth player raises questions as to how natty the results are.

Ronaldo is all about Ronaldo but he’s 37 if he wants to leave let him leave it’s no big deal

There are players out there in the long term that will be better for us than keeping him inhappy we have made this mistake with the likes of pogba Cavani lingard

Players are replaceable

We just have to nip it early so we can get a replacement and ten hag has time to work with them.

Shawthing, totally agree with you. Ronaldo is now into legacy mode and has been for a number of years. I don't doubt his commitment to winning at all costs but in his mind that means it goes through him.
His decision to leave for a CL team is based solely on ensuring he keeps ahead of Messi in the scoring and possibly winning stakes. He wants to leave the game as statistically the best player and he has earned the right to do that now.
As to which one is the best, very subjective and I have always been a Ronaldo fan however you can't deny what Messi has done. Either way we have been lucky to see both of these in there prime.
