Jesse Lingard, what is his position at the club? In the summer is was considered an almost certainty that he was going to leave. He is out of contract next summer and the murmurs coming out the club is that both Jesse and the club could soon sit down to discuss an extension. If that happens then what is his position at the club? Where does he fit in the pecking order?

On last season's form he clearly has something to offer, and personally I'd play Lingard with a broken leg ahead of Martial at this point. "Hard work over takes talent when talent forgets to work hard" and all that.

I also think with Ronaldo now at the club I would expect him to stay for at least 3 years, maybe longer. Which for me pushes Martial out.

In Sancho, Greenwood and Rashford we have some excellent options out wide, while Amad and particularly Shoretire are players to keep and eye on coming though. Currently I'd have Lingard 3rd choice in a wide position but will drop to 4th once Rashford is back.

I'd have Lingard as second choice behind Bruno in the No.10 ahead of Donny on current form. I also think stylistically Lingard is a better fit for what we expect from a No.10 in our current set up/ system.

What do you think we should do with Lingard and how does he fit into our side this season?

He should be able to get some game time. Fernandes will need a rest. If we qualify comfortably in the CL i.e win the first 4 games then he should certainly play the final 2 games.

I'd imagine he will likely play in the league Cup games and remain an impact player, coming off the bench. If he plays like he did for West Ham.

If Lingard plays like he did last season for West Ham, then it would be very difficult for him to play week in, week out. The problem he faces, is making a space available for him.

Jess plays left wing to fight it out with Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho competing for right wing although all four can play either side so competition might be more fluid.
Ronnie and Cavani will cover CF.
DvB has always been Bruno's understudy because we saw what happens when Bruno is running on empty. That leaves Pogba, Matic, McT and Fred playing the midfield roles.
Martial and Mata can cover for injuries and the kids can get game time in the league Cup games. The back five pick themselves.

I would rather the minutes given to a younger player. We should definetely not be giving Lingard a new 4/ 5 year deal. We need to stop rewarding mediocrity. He'll be another player on £100 thousand plus a week sitting in the reserves for years.

Chong ripping it up in the championship, Pellestri, Amad, Elanga, Hannibal. All players who deserve to be in and around the first time.

Let him go at the end of the season.

I'd have thought another short term deal with another loan in January.
If we can all work out he's down the pecking order I'm sure buyers will realise that aswell .
That's from a utd point of view but sitting tight and signing nothing then seeing what opportunities are available to him will probably be his best option.

Lingard should have left. Everyone is getting carried away with the goal, but omitting the fact he did nothing worth mentioning outside that finish. The goal itself came Donny passing to Pogba, continuing his run and taking two defenders out of position, Pogba then then plays a great ball and Martial's dummy draws the attention of more defenders, providing Lingard with the space needed to control the ball and slot home, it was a good finish, but the goal was a team effort, not all on Lingard. Before that shot, he was out-muscled,misplaced passes, caught offside and had little room to move into. He was good at West Ham because he had space to turn into, that space isn't available against a low block and he IST technically gifted enough to play against such tactics.

I think Ole will give Jesse to the summer to see how he goes. The conytract offered will be determined by his level of performance. As for position he can play insod eor outside on the left or right, he is that versatile. Whether he will start regularly I doubt especially as we paid so much for Sancho.

I think if in January we can keep Lingard for the rest of the season, somehow keep Pogba’s mind in the game even though he might be signing for Real by then, sell Donny (if Pogba is staying) and Martial to fund a proper CDM upgrade on Matic - we might win something this year.

I see Lingard starting a fair few. I think we can safely assume we might have a league XI and a CL/ Cup one - and I see Cavani, Martial, Donnie and definitely Lingard playing big parts in those.
Can't see how to get CR7 and Cavani in the same XI, but I'd love to see it. Ron's signing has changed everything to an extent. Pushed Cavani sideways and the dreaded 'H' word hasn't been uttered since.
