I realise I may be in the minority in not wetting myself with the return of CR7 but I can understand why we have done it.

On the plus side, he is a consummate professional and a born winner. His work ethic and dedication are an example to everyone and we have a number of young players who will hopefully watch, learn, and develop.

He is an amazing goal scorer and still has a burning desire to win, if we play hm at CF then I have no doubt he will score goals.

On the down side his best days are behind him and his star seems to be quickly spreading. Rumours suggest Allegri wanted shut of him as he was holding the team back.

Watching him in the World Cup was sobering, he was rarely involved and dies not have the energy of old. I also worry how this will affect Bruno. CR is a big personality so will he want to take all free kicks and penalties? His free kick record lately is dire, is anyone big enough to tell him that he is no longer the go to player for every set piece.

Is Cavani staying or going? If it’s a straight swap then I guess it makes sense as a short term option to see how Greenwood develops. If he’s staying then it’s getting crowded up front.

Finally, we have a much more burning issue in midfield, and it seems we are not addressing that. Look at my car, the body work is beautiful, I have the best sound system going, but the engine is crap.

Best posts I’ve seen today are from Brendan and shawthing, too many people are letting sentimentality cloud their vision.

I genuinely hope he scores a hatful of goals, elevates his team mates to another level, and has an Indian Summer. However, I fear the down sides outweigh the up sides.

{Ed0666's Note - cavani is staying I think

AJH, looks like Cavani will be spending a fair few nights in a hotel quarantining because he's going to play for Uruguay. Cavani is the only striker we have. A season with martial playing up top when Cavani is unavailable would see us struggling for top 4. This signing should put us right in the mix for the league.

And who knows, maybe we'll sign a midfielder.

Agree with that pretty much AJH, don't see how he fits in, seems like we have 6 players who would all prefer to play left wing.

Our main number 9 seems like he'd prefer to play international football over league football so hell probably fit in up top.

I think we only made a move as a PR move to stop ronaldo going to city, which isn't an ideal decision making process.

But ronaldo is my favourite player alongside rooney so ill be buzzing for the next few days at least.

This has been a good window for us with three world class players on board. But it has been an imperfect window. It's just a pity that we haven't been able to recruit a deep-lying holding midfielder such as Ndidi. If we had, there would have been grounds for real optimism. As it is, I feel that we will certainly entertain, but that one weakness may well come back to haunt us.

Good post, Tony. You set out the pros and cons, didn't resort to abusing him, and picked a side on the topic using a mixture of reason and personal feeling. Refreshing stuff 😉.

I wouldn't be too worried at a declining ronaldo I think he was top scorer in serie A, top scorer at the recent euros and about to become the highest scoring International player ever .
Even with his best days behind him I still think he will hit goals for fun .

Ed025, there is method to my madness, his presence in the team will lift all the players games by 20% at least.

Cheshire Red, do you think there is still a chance that the club look to close the window out with a Holding Midfielder. I get the feeling that the option if it happens this window is Saul (who i don't think wants to be a HM but has the energy to play it the way Olly wants) or Nevez who with the addition of Ronaldo to Bruno could become more attractive and realistic considering it would need to be a quick deal.
I don't see Olly wanting that destroyer type although Ndidi would be potentially perfect.
