The dilemma that is FRED!
Fred had a good game against PSG.
Made some great tackles, recoveries, interceptions and tried to thread neat passes. I remember sreaming at the tv for him to release rashford on a dangerous break in the 2nd held but he held the ball till being fouled. Going forward, those are the passes Fred should be able to pick out.
All that aside, as long as Fred stops trying those shots outside the penalty box, then he has my full support. I noticed he didn't try any against PSG, stand to be corrected though. 99.8% (my out of the blue stat) appear wayward.

Fred is a player that splits opinion. The issue is that he is great at certain things, yet he isn't well rounded enough to be a top level box to box player. His passing vision and execution isn't consistent enough and his shooting is woeful. Yet not every player needs to do every job. His pressing, harrying, tackling and turning over of possession is great. While he is very mobile, and quick. As a player who's job it is to disrupt the opposition, win the ball back and lay it off to better players he is excellent. But if your expecting him to be the next Xavi you will be disappointed.

If Fred learns to play to his strengths and not try to be all things to all men then he has a bright future. And I’m his biggest critic usually.

Fred is a road sweeper. Unfussy, does all the dirty work, in some games he is exactly what is needed. Endless energy, team player, love his approach. Unfortunately, he isn’t the most skilful but if he accepts that and concentrates on the dirty work he is very valuable.

Fred would do well to stick to the basics and become a good DM. He has the stamina and can tackle, it’s when he has to be offensive that he quickly gets found out.

Fred and McTominay's dirty work makes others look good.

I mentioned yesterday that I'd drop either Fred or Mctom for VDB. Not because they didn't play well, more to do with how VDB link up play passing and movement helps to speed to our play.

Hatter, for me the best shape is either 3412 or 442 diamond with our squad. Either way the solution is clear. Play two defensive minded midfielders (Fred, McTominay or Matic) against the top teams, with one or two of Pogba, Bruno and DvdB depending on whether it's a 3 or 4 man midfield. Then against the rest play with one defensive midfielder and 2 or 3 offensive midfielders.

My ideal line up atm would be the line up from last night but with DvdB stepping in for one of Fred or McTominay, then depending on form maybe either Greenwood or Cavani stepping in for Martial.

So can Fred be the new Kante? Learn the ropes at DM and take over from Matic?

Kante isn't a DM and Fred isn't either. You can't have a player with their energy sitting in front of defence, that's not their game.
They are defencive eightees who are all over the place and break up play. Both of them are like Herrera but with better engine, so better defencively on papper, but more average than Herrera on the ball.
Both Kante and Fred wants someone to sit behind them to receive the pass from the defence and organize from deep and someone in front of them with quality on the ball.
Kante is 5-6 years at Premier League and i can't believe that people still refer to him as a defensive midfielder.

{Ed025's Note - please dont mention fred in the same sentence as kante mate..

Fred is more suited to the champs league than epl imo.

{Ed025's Note - i was thinking championSHIP to be honest RW, but he has improved of late i must admit mate..

Kante is a DM and on his day one of the best 😊😊.

{Ed001's Note - no he is not. He is not a DM at all, he is a CM. He has only played DM once or twice in his career. When he is restricted by a role like that he is not going to perform to his best.}
