£80m we paid for Harry Maguire, looks like he's worth a quarter of that, absolutely crap. Gets rinsed every single time, been fully/ partly at fault for every goal we've conceded since the return. Shocking.

Calls for us to buy a CB to partner him with but why? Lindelof is much better and if anything needs someone better playing alongside him. His nationality seems to be keeping the criticism at bay. The blame goes towards Lindelof and De Gea more than anything, worst £80m spent in footballing history. New LB and CB needed for next season.

Would rather see a partnership of Lindelof and Tuanzebe/ Bailly for the rest of the season and then replace Maguire with Gimenez (Atletico) or Skriniar (Inter)

Harry had a bad day. Our defnese has been good for the past 6 months. Also while moaning about harry I can't understand how you came to the conclusion that we need a new LB as well.

He had a bad day? Give over, he's been having bad days since he first signed for us. And i mention the LB simply because i was already talking about our defence (which is average) or am i not allowed to talk about two different positions at once? 🤔.

Give it a rest mate. Enjoy the victory or does there have to be a negative post after every game?

Just to offer my opinion but Maguire is far better than Lindelof.

Just remind me how many goals we conceded in the last 15/ 16 games.

Id raise your quarter and probably says he worth half that what we paid for him but that's not really the point as everyone said at the time that we overpaid hugely for him

The reality is that maguire has been the exact same player he was at leicester and for england. He hasn't either improved or got worse as a player. Very good in the air and very good in physical duels. We all knew he had the pace and agility of a hgv lorry before we signed him and that's not going to change.

He signed a 6 year deal and is club captain, he will be one of the first names on the team sheet for a long time to come whether fans like it or not.

Scholes,

I'm not Maguires biggest fan. Yeah we overpaid for him. He is a good player and has improved us defensively. He is no Rio that's for sure. I think if him as a better Jones. Like Jones he likes mobility and pace.

New left back?

Maguire was done but the keeper is to blame for the goal never should you get beat there.

Maguire has played some great games for us. Clearly this wasn’t one of them but let’s not hang him on one game. We are weak at CB for sure though.

In order of preference we should prioritise:

RW - ideally Sancho
CB - with fast recovery pace to partner Maguire
CDM - Matic cover
LB - Shaw replacement / competition

De Gea issue needs resolving too. If Henderson made us an ultimatum about first team football or he’d leave I suspect DDG would go. Don’t see that next season though but clearly DDG looks to be declining.

All the above illustrates what we already know that our defence is not perfect. Though if you look at the stats we are one of the best in Europe allegedly in 2020. But offensively we are looking very good now. Appreciate you need balance and especially need quality squad depth which we know we are lacking.

A reminder this was still a game that we won and scored 5 goals in the process so it’s not all bad!

04 Jul 2020 21:09:55
We had a really good attacking game today and scored 5 and all you can do is come on and moan about Maguire?

He wasn't and never will be worth £80m but we were desperate for CB and everyone knew it.
We haven't been so bad in defence and them 2 goals are the first goals since January we let in at OT. Maguire is a good solid player, not world level but good enough for us currently.

04 Jul 2020 21:27:29
i agree on Maguire, he is a $20M player no more than that, the club overpaid for Him, We all can see that but I feel most of you don't want to give Bailly a chance, I thought bar the mistake (which IMO is never a penalty) from that brick ball that Matic passed to him, He was outstanding, He covered for Maguire"s lack of pace in like 2 opportunities, to me if he keeps himself fit for the majority of next season he should get the start not Maguire or Lindelof for that matter, anyways great win and we are a joy to watch at the moment, seems like the amateur is doing stuff that neither Crappy Moyes, army Van Gaal or Cranky bus Mou could not do.

04 Jul 2020 21:37:50
In which way is Maguire better than Lindelof aside from being better in the air? (discountdave)

Yes, a new LB Bolger2, Shaw just isn't good enough, wasn't bad today but on the larger scale of things we need better. i.e Robertson, Davies/ Alaba, Jose Gaya etc.

So because we scored 5 goals that means we/ i can't criticise our £80m CB who got absolutely rinsed (again) for the first bournemouth goal? He's been embarrassed defensively on at least 15 occasions this season alone, nevermind all the other little f ups he does. (DanJames)

How can you possibly blame De Gea more than Maguire for the first goal? Maguire is laughably bad, if that happened to Lindelof this page would have exploded.

Seems as if whenever Maguire makes a mistake it's either Lindelof or De Gea's fault. Not surprised mind, seen some people calling him 'world class' on here🤣🤣🤣.

{Ed047's Note - Maguire is just a lump mate and not a particularly good lump.

The defence is total garbage, get rid of DDG, Shaw, Maguire, and Lindelof. ignore the fact that only 2 teams have conceded fewer goals than us, that counts for nothing, they’re clearly all rubbish.

I’m not saying they are world beaters but it’s been a lot better than the keystone cops we saw in recent years.

Personally, I’d swap DDG for Henderson and try and up grad Lindelof. I think Shaw is doing well, AWB has Robeson great, and I’d stricken with Maguire, although I agree we got mugged there.

Shaw has done well AJH? You must be fishing at this point, can't attack, can't defend, overweight and massively overrated.

Lolll, My post didn't get posted but I totally agree with Scholes and Maguire should not be anywhere near this team. We are not winning any major titles with him in the first team.

I'm far from Maguire's biggest fan, in fact I recall saying on the site his signing is our "Andy Carroll to Liverpool moment".

I'll admit the above was a bit of an exaggeration, however, I wasn't happy we signed him. Despite that, I think he's proved to be a good signing, not worth near what we paid but he is our best CB. He's the most comfortable on the ball of our defenders, best in the air and physically the most dominant. He has also played pretty much every game and seems to be more vocal than others in the side.

He has his faults, such as his pace and agility but his positives definitely outweigh the negatives. Lindelof isn't quick either but he's also nowhere near as physically dominant as Maguire hence why every single forward pulls onto Lindelof for most of the game.

We need a new CB or at least Tuanzebe to stay fit for 5 minutes.

04 Jul 2020 23:25:29
Out of back 5.

I'd replace Shaw, Lindelof, De Gea, Maguire, Wan Bissaka in that order.

Shaw, is turd. And huge.
Lindelof is a pansy, likes the ball at his feet, can't do much more.
De Gea errors started creeping in.
Maguire big price tag, decent, should be 3rd choice CB with 2 spanking new class CB to come in.
Wan Bissaka is not good going forward, he would be great for defensive games, although today he got the ball in early which almost got Rashford a goal.

Ive been vocal in my critisism of players and ole but you have to dig pet deep to find too many negatives for the last couple of months.
The team are playing well. Aborting plenty conceding few. Bruno has had a huge effect on everybody.
Players are making mistakes but when you win they don't get the same focus and that's the way it should be.
There are a few that are either playing slightly below par but rarely do all 11 play perfectly in any team.
When it was bad i said its ok to say its bad. When its good its right to say its good.
You can pick holes if you want to look hard enough. But collectively the performances and results have been very good.
Its been a long time but for the first time in years i'm going into games expectant rather than hopeful.
There is still a few twists and turns to come over the next 5 games but the players look like they are up for the challenge.

Maguire will still be Englands first choice centre half.

{Ed047's Note - well that’s saved the day for Maguire

05 Jul 2020 02:42:32
Sorry, but I don't see what Shaw's done over the last lot of games to warrant the criticism here. Solid performances every game, and offers us an outlet. Much fitter looking as well - still making bursts forward in the latter stages of a game. Needs to work on his final ball, but apart from that, I really can't see what he's done so wrong.

23.) 05 Jul 2020
05 Jul 2020 05:21:07
Maguire is the weak link of our back 5, he makes the most errors and yet he gets the least criticism. I will support him to the hilt all the while he plays for United, not least because he seems a good leader on and off the pitch, but he makes far too many mistakes and he’s simply not good enough for United.

De Gea has made 3 howlers this season, and he made a couple last season, but he’s generally been pretty good both this season and last. That said, because he’s consistently been so utterly brilliant for 5 consecutive seasons prior to the World Cup in 2018, and he’s not reached those levels for more than a few games since then, his decline appears quite dramatic. However I don’t really blame him for the first goal today. It was a very tight angle, but it was very close range, and as far as I’m concerned, he what all keepers would do in that situation. He closed the angle/ distance and made himself big, and was beaten by a very good finish. However, I think Dave will be replaced by Henderson next summer, and that will probably be the right move.

Shaw is generally pretty solid in all departments. He’s not nearly as good as Robertson but he’s very good defensively, and he provides width and energy, and I think he’s been pretty reliable this season. He deserves his place at United.

Lindelof is our best centre back without doubt. He’s composed, he reads the game very well and he allows play to build from the back. He needs a faster, stronger player next to him, but for now I think Bailly should start with Lindelof. Bailly is exceptional at times, he’s just unreliable due to his injury problems.

Wan Bissaka is the best defensive right back, certainly in the league, potentially in the world, and his offensive attributes have improved immensely this season. He would be a player that I wouldn’t sell at any price.

24.) 05 Jul 2020
05 Jul 2020 11:02:40
I don't recall Bruce or Vidic being the fastest. Sometimes its a question of having a fast defender alongside a slower one and they dovetail using the best of their combined qualities. Bruce had Pallister and Vidic had Rio. If Maguire had a Rio alongside I think they would be a formidable team.

I also think that defensively Shaw is not quite good enough at the top level. Too often he is caught out of position and Maguire is left struggling to cover him.

25.) 05 Jul 2020
05 Jul 2020 11:04:33
Maguire never advertised himself at that price so it’s largely irrelevant. If we’d only paid £10m for him nobody would call him as bad as they are doing. I think his statistics speak volumes. Worth pointing out that all defenders look bad when they get nutmegged and very few don’t look nervy when faced with a high press. He might not be VVD or Laporte but I reckon he’s got a good shout for 3rd best CB in the league.

But aside from all that, how miserable do you have to be to have such a venomous moan after winning a 7 goal thriller?! Enjoy a great win.

26.) 05 Jul 2020
05 Jul 2020 11:06:36
I think with Maguire next to him Lindelof regressed. He doesn't know what to do and where to go because of Harrys pure positioning. Harry is not a CB for a title winning team but you seems all to be ok with that. He is in 6 years contract and in order to compete we must create a superb team to cover for him. The guy every time he is under pressure gives the ball straight to an opponent. He is not a ball playing center back, ok if it is a case of giving a pass at 5 metres without pressure i can do it better and without 80 millions.
