Be interested to see the answers to this, but how far off does everyone think we are at the moment from competing for the league?

Personally I don't think it's a million miles off, because bar Liverpool there's not really a team in the league I don't back us against, heck I think if we get our strongest team out against Liverpool it would be a great game. For me I really think we need a right winger (we have all known this for years) and another centre back beside maguire. Lindelof isn't a bad player, but if he was an a squad player that would mean your first choice would be pretty good. For me a dream window would involve Sancho/ chiesa, Saul and koulibaly. I know, we may end up with none of them! Those 3 players alone for me put us in contention.

Some people might think we need another manager and that's also potentially a fair point, but in terms of overall strength of the team we aren't a million miles off. Interesting window coming up, hopefully we finish strong and get some good recruits in.

Also one last point, and I hate to say it. Fair play to the scousers.

The bar has been raised by both City and Liverpool. 90 plus points is the target now to win the league and going on consistent winning runs. Pep and City will be hurting and will want to be back for vengeance and Klopp will make sure his team stays hungry.

The season after next if we get recruitment right.

We are miles off.

It's not just the starting 11 it's the infrastructure. We are now where Liverpool were under Hodgson miles away. A cup side if you like. Behind the scenes we are on the way down not up. And we have a novice manager managing one of the biggest clubs in the world, an absolute shambles.

Miles off is right.

Dan James has it right: we won’t improve consistently until the infrastructure is sorted out and we get a top class manager in.

I really admire Ole for what he’s done, but he was never more than an interim manager brought in to steady the ship after the previous disasters.

We need to have a good look at what Liverpool have done to get to where they are. : there are definitely parallels there, this we’re maybe like Liverpool 5 or 6 years ago.

Much still needs to be done to challenge, or we’ll remain a cup team jostling for 4th place.

the difference with pep although a good manager he's never had to rebuild a team in the way klopp has, that is the difference in class, klopp is by far the better manager

BUT klopp and pep were a novice at one point.

we have played the best football since fergie left.
the problem is not the manager, the problem is above the manager and the piss poor squad he inherited which he has slowly improved.

if anyone says we have not progressed since ole took over your talking nonsense, he may of got things wrong tactically ( according to keyboard managers) in some games but. funny thing is as bad of a manager ole is, he could win both the FA CUP and Europa this season, even finish 3rd.

but in answer to your question, it all depends on recruitment, i think we are at least 2 years away from any challenge, we need to be consistent against the (lower) teams.

we need to install an attitude throughout that you go out to die for your team mates and the fans.

liverpool up until the Rodgers years would be said miles off but sometimes things just click but yeab behind the scenes needs a look at.

I think this will be a defining season for Pep. Be interesting to see if he has the ability to turn it around next season.

Sepp it’ll be interesting to see if pep is there next season. I think they’ve been found out defensively. If you are brave and try and bypass the press they’re very vulnerable and I don’t think the goalkeeper is all he’s cracked up to be either.

I agree - he's not been in this position before, so we'll see how good a manager he really is if he stays.

I think it’s crazy the money they’ve spent on defenders especially full backs and it’s still their major weakness.

If we have the luck with injuries that liverpool have had to our first team then I don't think we are that far off. 2 signings A right winger and cb are a must for me if I had the choice I would have a different lb too as I don't see how we can do it with neither of our full backs being attack minded and if AWB is that good defensively then shaw has to be upgraded.

The rest of our squad after the first team is not that good imo and the majority wouldn't have even made the bench of some our title winning teams.

In terms of first eleven i don't think we are miles away. With 2 "bruno" i would be comfortable against anyone. On paper a front 6 of Scott (although he is not holding) Bruno, Pogba (or a good replacement) Rashford, Martial and say Sancho is up there with the best i think. With a top coach i would say in 2 years we can compete. Rashford, Martial and Greenwood with average age of 21,3 have scored 50 goals, that's one of the best records in Europe and it must say something.

So putting Bruno into the mix and a couple of good signings there is clearly potential. Can this potential become title challenge? I think the manager holds the key and i hope our manager can although i would be more comfortable with a top coach like Pep. Congratulations to Liverpool, they were by far the best team. Some will say it was easy, but maybe they made it look so easy .
