I've been having an interesting debate with a couple of friends about our midfield.

If you could bring back any one former Manchester United midfielder in their prime to play along side Pogba and Bruno who would you sign?

My choice would be Carrick, massively underrated and would allow both Pogba and Bruno to play their natural game and compliment them.

There could be a few but I can't look past Roy Keane. As much as he understood the defensive side of the game and was an incredible leader, he could keep it simple and knew to give the ball to the talented players ahead of him. So Bruno and Pogba would get protection but plenty of the ball.

Alternatively, a fully fit Owen Hargreaves. He worked exceptionally hard in midfield, was positionally sound and made a huge difference to our 2007/ 08 season.

Roy Keane would be the best option to partner Bruno and Pogba.
He would add steel to the midfield.

Best thing is, he will rip the ones who sulks during games.

Be Scholes so he could take Pogbas place.

Shappy please tell me one of your friends picked Keane.

Definitely Keane. If Pogba played alongside Keane he’d be twice the player. He’s never had a player to properly keep him in check and frighten him into putting in the hard yards.

Yeah a couple of them have picked Keane, one picked Scholes while the other Robson.

For me though while all those players are better players than Carrick, I feel Carrick better suits the tactical role you would need from a holding midfielder playing with Pogba and Bruno.

I appreciate that Keane would be able to do the job, I feel asking him to just sit takes away too much from his game. I'm also not sure if Keane's mentality would actually work on players nowadays. In the 90's there were plenty of hard in your face bully boy players. I'm struggling to name one player like that currently playing. Different era and different mentality, I'm pretty sure Keane would be in trouble for work place bullying if he was playing the game today.

I feel Carrick would hold his position and do the defensive work well, while his passing with great technical players like Pogba and Bruno would be exceptional.

When you have 2 players like pogba and Bruno. You have enough technical ability there. That is what's wrong with a lot of teams today. You slot Keane in there straight away. Run all day. Get stuck in. Good passer and great reader of a game. Keep the reat of the team on their toes.
A born winner.

Keane not a patch on Carrick as a technical player but having bruno and pogba already there I would pick keane to win battles and give it to the players who make things happen like he used to do with Scholes.

The question is who to play with Pogba and Bruno. Keane was the leader and an obvious choice, however who would get the best out of Pogba and Bruno. Keane demanded but I sense Robson would have cajoled then slightly better and got more out of them. So Robson for this question but Keane overall.

Robson was more a box to box cm imo.

Leahy, that Barcelona team with Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta wasn't too bad, all very technical.

Back when players could boot eachother six foot up in the air you needed a tough guy who could dish it out in your team. But now where heavy breathing on the back of a player is a foul I think technical ability is the most important thing.

I love Keane but I'm not sure he would be tolerated in modern football. Sergio Ramos is as tough as a modern day player gets at the top level. Keane could have snapped him in half with a look, nevermind a tackle.

I think with Pogba and Bruno in the same midfield what you need to balance that out is someone who is defensively disciplined, who can shield the back four, move the ball quickly and efficiently and control the tempo. Keane could do that, but I feel in that role Carrick could do it better.

Fletcher, he was very underrated imo.

Keane, not just for his capabilities as a player but for his attitude and desire. He would take every single player up with him to another 10%.

mnk, don't downplay Keane's technical ability. The guy was an incredible passer of the ball, rarely misplacing a pace and very seldom were they sideways passes.

I'd comfortably pick him over Carrick every day of the week no matter what other midfield partnerships there were available.
