ED001,

Who do you think would be a good choice at LB if Shaw doesn't sort himself out. I think this will be a make or break season for him this year.

{Ed001's Note - well Dalot could cover in the short term. Personally I think you would have been better off buying Chilwell rather than Maguire from Leicester but I doubt they will sell both so quickly. Other options would be Gaya of Valencia, Aaron Martin (who just joined Mainz and I was surprised you didn't jump in and get him to be honest). To be honest, looking at the ones around there are not a lot of outstanding options! The Norwich one impressed me on Friday night and Taylor from Burnley as well could be decent choices.}

Am I missing something here? Shaw was player of the season last year. He was caught out of position a couple of times and suddenly we are talking about replacing him.

{Ed001's Note - player of the year says more about how bad the rest of your team was than how good he was if you ask me.}

AJH,

I thought Shaw was poor last season. He hasn't been the same since he broke his leg.

He improved a lot last year from not getting a game but of the 5 1st choice defenders we have no left footed cover at lb. When young goes we will reuptake young with a lb cover/ competition but it was not a priority given his improvement last year and the fact that dalot and young can cover this season.
The bit i don't like is young being captain got him the nod last Saturday for the bench ahead of dalot.

One game in and we won, so we need to find a new negative to talk about.
Luke Shaw, it's your turn, sorry pal.

I think he needs good competition for his place. If i remember correctly all previous Managers have accused him unable to compete and put in a shift. Young is pretty much on last legs so we need cover next season who can compete with Shaw and push him for his place.

I agree with Ed. Tbh I was surprised shaw got player of year last year. I have always had high hopes for him but he just hasn’t developed. Can’t say he’s outstanding in any area. Not great going forward and not the greatest defensively. He was not afforded cover by rashford at times on Saturday but so I’ll give him the benefit of doubt on that point. However, we do need better from him. I’d upgrade in the summer.

Dalot looks like one for the future, going to be a good player but at the moment defensively has major issues imo.
Interesting the norwich lads got a mention, attacked really well against the scouse but defensively again all over the spot .
Shaw was player of the year last year, fans and players I think. Had a lot on his hands Sunday with the set up and our left sided player not tracking backing .
Interestingly chelsea got behind bissaka just as much if not more, sky showed 3 chelsea chances at half time all in the space behind him . He played well bissaka but was caught out several times as well .
That said a lot of players where, the game really was stretched, with space all over the pitch. I really think the rule of defenders taking the ball of the keeper and some teams really trying to implement starting from the back is going to open the game up a lot .
It was a similar story for the norwich liverpool game real end to end stuff with space everywhere.
Once a team plays deep and manages to play through the high press it really opens the game up .

The new rule change allowing that tactic of taking the ball from the keeper inside the box encourages playing from the back and makes the high press much harder because you need to commit players even further forward to become effective which leaves acres of space in midfield if you continue to press 15 yards higher into the box. If only 1 or 2 press that high you can play around them. I know it gives AJH the willies but its making a good spectacle for the fans.
Im surprised the analysts are not making more of it.
Its a huge change to the game. I like it.

I always fancied giving Daley Blind the willies.

Haha AJH!

Agree with that Ken. The new rule is having a mu h bigger effect than I thought it would in the games I've seen. There have been quite a few wide open games where the press is beaten creating space in the midfield. There are bound to be goals conceded from mistakes as well.
