Hey ed001/ed002,
Hope ye are both good. ed002 i fully understand and respect your stance. i hope you come back soon and just ignore the negative comments. ed001 if you are free and get a chance could you give us a quick run down of the situation with targets for jan/summer? thanks for the neymar info probably never happen though. ed002 was saying we could move for stones and i really hope we do. there's talk of sadio mane too any truth to it? thanks eds.

{Ed001's Note - the reason the article on football-news-views.co.uk regarding Messi and Neymar was written is because Neymar Jr might very well force his way out of Barcelona. There is consideration of a move that would see his tax issues resolved by a nice signing bonus covering his costs. So it is not as impossible as it may seem, despite Barca's reluctance to sell him, unlike Messi, who Neymar was actually bought to replace long term.

As for the rest, January is not likely to lead to much for United, yes there is still interest in both Stones and Mane, but neither club are willing to allow the players to move in the January window. Personally, from what I am told, the search is on for a left footed centre back, which I think will be the main focus of the January window. Van Gaal apparently really likes having one right footer and one left footer as his centre back pairing and is not convinced either Blind or Rojo are the long term option there.

The interest in Vertonghen is pretty much dead, unless some kind of indication comes from the player of interest, I would not expect him to be an option. Laporte is one that is very highly regarded (by many) but it is unlikely he will be an option in January. Inigo Martinez and Eder Balanta seem to be the ones most likely, from what I am being told. I have to be honest though, I am taking that entirely from what I am told, as I have not taken enough notice of those players to notice if they are actually left footed.}

Nice read, thanks!

20 Nov 2015 09:45:09
Balanta, the Football Manager god!

{Ed002's Note - I would not get too worked up over Balanta moving to Manchester United.}

20 Nov 2015 11:19:33
Thank you for such a detailed response Ed001 - very much appreciated!

{Ed001's Note - welcome mate.}

20 Nov 2015 12:20:38
Very interesting. I imagine any January move for a left footed centre back, if successful, would end any interest in Stones?

And I certainly think that the summer will be spent chasing Ronaldo, Neymar or Bale.

{Ed001's Note - Stones is right footed, he is wanted as a long term replacement for Smalling.}

20 Nov 2015 12:52:37
I see, that is intersting given that Smalling is only 25!

{Ed001's Note - perhaps he is not rated that highly, have you thought of that?}

20 Nov 2015 13:12:14
dont be shocked if we bring Ron Vlaar. i know Van Gaal he trusts Vlaar very much.

20 Nov 2015 13:17:53
Yes I had thought of that. Though that would be a surprise, I think general opinion is that he has been excellent and is one of the best centre backs in the country.

I could quite easily see Stones and say Martinez coming in though to take the place of Jones and Rojo.

{Ed001's Note - LVG has an obsession with balance, one left footer one right footer at the back. He would not want to replace Rojo with Stones.}

20 Nov 2015 13:18:39
Hasn't put a foot wrong though this season.

{Ed001's Note - except against Arsenal, when he was utter dog turd. Also the only game where he actually had to do any real defending and not spend the game having the midfield do it all for him.}

20 Nov 2015 13:26:12
That is a very fair point Ed. I would happily see Stones come in I must say, I think he has real potential to be the next great English defender. I'd be gutted to see him at Chelsea to replace Terry because he would do so well.

Out of curosity Ed, and this is really hypothetical. How far away do you think LVG see's the squad as being 'complete'? Say we got Stones and Laporte and then managed somehow to get say Neymar in the summer. Do you think LVG would have completed his rebuilding? Or do you think that there are other pressing areas he would address?

{Ed001's Note - I believe he would still want another forward if he got those three in.}

20 Nov 2015 13:39:20
Yes, I think we would need another centre forward. We would be okay on the wings with Neymar and Memphis or Mata but any injuries to Martial and it's Rooney upfront. Rooney always has to play behind the striker now for me.

Do you think it would be a big name like Kane? Or one that would be happier to sit on the bench?

{Ed002's Note - I would not hold your breath over Neymar moving to Old Trafford Fresh.}

20 Nov 2015 14:02:38
Thanks ED001, very infirmative. I been of the opinion LVG would want a left footed CB for some time. If we were to secure both Stones and Laporte (I know unlikely) it would offer such a fantastic long term solution.

{Ed002's Note - I would certainly not discount Martins Indi.}

20 Nov 2015 14:09:02
On Smalling I'd swap him for Stones in s heartbeat, if Everton seem to like mid twenties former United players maybe they would like to take Smalling off our hand?

20 Nov 2015 14:14:43
I'm not. I think if anyone like that it would be Ronaldo. Otherwise someone like Robben, Reus etc I suspect will be looked at.

I was more bothered about whether or not you had any centre forwards in mind.

{Ed002's Note - Besiktas would like to keep hold of Mario Gomez and make his loan permanent - but they are aware that the right offer from England or Spain would tempt both the player and Fiorentina. Manchester United and Spurs have both taken a look at him recently.}

20 Nov 2015 14:24:02
Cheers - I feel up to date now! Thanks mate.

{Ed002's Note - Don't lose sight of Bernardo Silva.}

20 Nov 2015 15:07:30
I read about him somewhere, is he an attacking midfielder or more of a number 6?

{Ed002's Note - He plays as a right wing usually.}

20 Nov 2015 16:03:19
Okay thanks, one to watch out for in January then perhaps.

If Smalling isn't rated what's the thoughts on Jones?

{Ed001's Note - From what I am told, Smalling is still not seen as being reliable enough fitness wise, and Jones even less so. His play when fit has not been mentioned, but his fitness issues make that pretty much irrelevant I guess. Shame for the lad, at one time he looked a special talent.}

20 Nov 2015 20:36:42
Yeah they both looked good when first signed.

20 Nov 2015 22:08:08
Smalling has been the best defender in the league this year. He has really stepped his game up.

21 Nov 2015 02:03:56
{Ed001's Note - except against Arsenal, when he was utter dog turd. Also the only game where he actually had to do any real defending and not spend the game having the midfield do it all for him. }

Or that the midfield was non existent against Arsenal. We had no pace with Carrick schweinsteiger (pressing high) and mata. Schneiderlin Should have definitely played against Arsenal. Smalling obviously didn't have his best game as we got smashed but the midfield was the problem in the Arsenal game.

{Ed001's Note - which was my point, it is not that he is playing any better, it is that the midfield is protecting him better. Not sure you are getting this at all...}

22 Nov 2015 13:59:02
I've seen you've come out with this tripe before in regards to Smalling Ed01 and it's quite clear you don't rate him. He's been one of, if not the best CB in the league since probably the second half of last season. If you think Stones would be bought to replace Smalling than you're even more deluded than I originally thought.

{Ed001's Note - yes it is very clear I don't rate him, but it is not me that is deluded bless ya. Only the deluded would believe he has been anywhere near being the best CB in the league. Only the deluded would think Stones would not walk into the team ahead of him any day of the week. Stones is already far better than he is, much as I hate to say that as I don't like to hype up young players who are as much potential as reality. Especially when they play for Everton! Stones is already better though. Smalling was getting torn to shreds yesterday, but I am sure you are still blind to the fact that he had no idea how to cope with Deeney and Ighalo. If he learnt how to position himself properly, then he would be excellent, but he hasn't a clue about it as yesterday clearly demonstrated.

As for tripe, I would reread your own inane ramblings for a better example of it.}

Ed1 what is your opinion about Martins-Indi as ed2 has mentioned told us that we have looked at him.
Also who would you recommend to solve our cb issues as your choice and not what looks likely to happen?
Thanks.

{Ed001's Note - Martins-Indi is ok, but not good enough, in my opinion, for United. He is quick and strong, but his positional sense is just not good. In the system LVG uses, he would do fine, but he would struggle in a more open set up as his tendency to get caught out of position would be a worry.

If I was going to choose one centre back to slot in, money no object etc, it would actually be Otamendi. As that is out, I would look at Laporte.}
