If one more person tells me preseason mrans nothing, then I'm going to explode. The preseason results mean nothing and i fully agree on that.
But the way we play in preseason DOES mean something. We're playing the same negative rubbish, midfield that can't pass, team that has no obvious tactics, players who seem confused.
These matches should be about getting fitness and playing offensive attractive football and bedding in some youngsters. Real played the kids and they played us off the park in second half, we had 5 youngsters on the bench but only one was used.
What are Mourinho's tactics? Can anyone enlighten me?

Pre-season means nothing really though ;-)

Boom!

AAA in that case, Judging from last season's preseason form, we were to win all trophies.

Forget about last nights result it's not important but I think it's about time we all accepted that's whilst Jose remains in charge we will continue to be a predominantly defensive outfit especially against the top teams.

From an attacking perspective It doesn't matter who we sign the approach will not change. We will continue to defend deep, with numbers behind the ball and try to counter. The problem with this approach is when we win the ball back we inevitably lose it again as we don't have a forward option. It makes us look disjointed and devoid of ideas. Against teams that press this problem will be amplified a thousand times.

Sanchez and Mata, so effective in pre season returned to their usual
positions out wide where they got dragged so deep they effectively became auxiliary full backs. Sanchez must play higher otherwise we will simply not see the best from him.

It makes sense to me that Jose is targeting a dominant CB. We conceded another soft goal from a set piece when in reality we should be winning those types of games from set pieces. That after all is the plan. Sit deep, frustrate then try and nick a 1-0 win from a set piece or counter attack. In that respect Maguire or Mina would be shrewd signings. Aerially dominant in both boxes and any perceived defensive fragilities are compensated by the fact we play so deep with numbers behind the ball.

Jose isn't going to change and why should he? Almost unparalleled success in several different countries is testimony to that.

Acceptance is now our only option. Performances can no longer be judged aesthetically or by feelings of enjoyment and excitement. In Jose land the result is King and the ends always justifies the means, even in pre season friendlies.

From an attacking perspective we look as impotent as the day he started. There has been no evolution in terms of style or attacking intent.

The only conceivable title challenge will come from keeping clean sheets and hoping that some of the undoubted quality in our team can fashion enough opportunities to nick a goal. When we take the lead we win and we can all take at least some comfort from this statistic.

For most this post will be depressingly hard to read. There will be times when everything clicks and we'll play some good stuff much like we saw last year, but the key to our season won't come from improving our attacking style or scoring more goals rather than cutting out defensive mistakes the likes at which we saw at Stoke, Huddersfield, Newcastle and the two set piece goals conceded against City at OT to name but a few. Our title will be won from a solid defensive platform and keeping clean sheets rather than gung ho cavalier football, adding another quality CB before the deadline might just be the most important signing of Jose's Utd career.

Let's take enjoyment from results because without them are we really any different to Burnley in our approach or philosophy to the game. (no disrespect intended) .

This is not an anti Jose post and I always take more enjoyment from the result rather than the performances. Winning after all is what it's all about. I must concede to the doubters however that when we don't win this approach is hard to justify and not in keeping with the traditions of the Club and certainly not what we've all become accustomed over the past two decades.

Jose won't be around forever and moving forward the Club must decide what direction it wants to take us.

Excellent post. I'm very much Jose in but you nailed it when you said that when results aren't good the style is amplified.

I don't see this as a Jose problem. He's simply doing what he's always done.

The problems lies with the board appointing a manager who's entire approach is in conflict with the traditions of the Club. To exacerbate matters it would appear they have a differing approach to transfers as well. The Club being reluctant to deliver players of a certain age but expecting the manager to compete with one hand tied behind his back. Once again they have in my opinion demonstrated an astonishing level of naivety and arrogance over estimating Jose's ability and under estimating the competition.

Yes Jose has spent lots of money but so has everyone else. Jose inherited an unbalanced and average squad. Investment was badly needed just to return us to the parity of top 4. Have we really seen a commitment from the board to now take us to the next level?

It remains my opinion that the owners are unconcerned with results on the pitch merely increasing the profitability of the brand. This can continue to grow without delivering trophies so where is the incentive to give Jose the tools to wrestle back the title when they have no guarantee on their investment?

We're stuck now until we unearth the next managerial genius. In my opinion the Club should be scouting the globe to try and find him. At this moment in time Potch appears the obvious choice. A young talented coach with a commitment to youth who plays exciting, high intensity football and can deliver results working within a budget. Whether he could transfer this into trophies remains to be seen but that's an argument for another day.

DLIB, good posts. I do agree that the style will not change, but I don't see any style apart from parking 10 men behind the ball, then losing the ball very easily. We simply cannot pass the ball and have no attacking intent.
In addition, dropping deep is always a risk as when we lose the ball deep, our defense is under immediate pressure. If we were to play 30 yards up the pitch, then th defense will have more time to organize and it will give the midfield the time to win the ball.
But I don't see this changing as you say, so more matches where we are under the cosh for 90mins and conceding a goal. If we were to lose, I would rather see us lose with a fight than this coward attitude. And Mourinho is exactly that.
