Maguire had a good world cup but he's not that good. i'd rather get Alderweireld. (good 3 seasons of football in him) .
We need quality buys. No more average signings.

Couldn’t agree more. We would be getting our pants pulled down buying Maguire for £50m+. Yes he had a good World Cup but he is defensively suspect and gets caught wandering up field far too much. He’s a great threat in the opposition box during corners but he would be another Jones/ smalling type signing. Alderwerield is the best cb in the league for me. We should be moving heaven and earth to get him.

I agree. Maguire isn't a huge step up from what we already have, certainly not a £65m step up.

Three advantages I can think of about Maguire:

1 - Home Grown

2 - Can be pretty decent bringing the ball out from the back, and the ball spends a lot of time with our defenders before they usually hoof it. Might be better with him running into midfield creating space.

3 - Jose doesn't know how to play creative football anymore (if he ever did), just like Southgate he will rely on set-pieces to break teams down. We get a crazy amount of corners that almost all the time are wasted, he will win games on his own if we sign somebody that can deliver a corner.

In saying all of that, he is woefully sleepy, has no positional sense and will be a liability in big games when one lapse means potential defeat - fortunately most games aren't like that, so he could be a shrewd signing turning draws into wins and maybe helping us get an early goal which means teams attack us earlier and we can score more on the break, hmmm.

I wouldn't sign him as I wouldn't have Utd playing this morose way, but I see the logic in Jose signing him - obviously we will pay 40% more than what he is worth, that is what we do!

Totally agree Danny.
Park - if we pay what is touted to Levy for TA we will not only get our pants pulled down we'll be needing a pregnancy test! Agree with you on Maguire though but anyone we go after, you can add a lump on the fee because we are seen as dumb enough to pay it.
Mad Hatter 3 good seasons £60+ million plus wages that's £20+ m a year- Zlatan money and he scored at t'other end!

26 Jul 2018 16:03:20
Still think that we are Putting pressure on spurs to reduce the fee for Alderwerield by declaring interest in Maguire. Think if we are to get him then it will be a deadline day type of deal.

{Ed002's Note - It doesn't work like that.}

26 Jul 2018 16:20:48
I'm not a huge fan of Maguire but he has been on a steady increase in terms of his development. It's obviously a big step up for him if he was to come but I think he'd do well for us.

Obviously Alderwiereld is the top target but paying over £70 million for a 29 year old doesn't sit right with me. We have to draw the line in the sand somewhere and that's it for me.

If we start the league with Bailey, Lindelof, Smalling and Maguire, I'd be happy with tode options.

26 Jul 2018 18:29:48
I think we'd have to sell two of Smalling, jones and rojo. Get Tuanzebe a good loan and next season he can take the place of whoever survives out of those three with them moved on.

26 Jul 2018 18:31:09
Call me old fashioned but I like my defenders to defend, something Maguire isn’t great at.

26 Jul 2018 18:35:20
The lad looks a good player in the making and he is showing improvement all the time . I wouldn't be against the kid getting a chance .

26 Jul 2018 19:29:15
Terrible signing. So pointless and smacks of desperation and lack of strategy or thought.

No better than what we have, which ain’t great.

26 Jul 2018 20:00:36
Eric79, I think he'll do well. He knows the league. Smalling, Jones and Rojo aren't going to improve, Maguire has a chance to move to a bigger club and play with a manager who is excellent at setting up defenses.

I mentioned earlier about him improving at every important part of his career. That to me shows he has the potential to be a great player for us.

Watch any academy kid. It's always the best player at u16's that makes it. It's the kid who who adapts and works hard. I wouldn't be disappointed with him joining.

26 Jul 2018 20:01:12
Paying £65m isn’t giving the kid a chance. It would make him the second most expensive defender in the history of the game.

26 Jul 2018 20:47:54
So by your definition Danny, that makes van Dyke the best defender ever?

26 Jul 2018 21:02:03
No, I don’t think I said anything like that.

There is a big difference between ‘maybe we should give the kid a chance’, and ‘maybe the kid deserves a chance, so I’ll pay £65m for him”.

We’re talking about massive money. Pretty much double the most we (and most other clubs for that matter) have ever spent on a cb.

26 Jul 2018 21:04:30
He works well in a 3 because of his ability on the ball could this suggest a change in formation?
