Though I've always been an advocate of standing by the manager (whoever s/ he is), I honestly cannot wait for Mourinho to leave.

He always has an inferiority complex with popular, confident and expressive players as such, he cannot hide his dislike for them.

He mentioned captain potentials currently in the squad;

“The captain was Valencia last season, I think he’s going to be the captain, ” Mourinho said. “And when he doesn’t play we have to make decisions.

“Depends on who is on the pitch, if Smalling is, if Ashley Young is, if Herrera is or Mata is, if they are on the pitch they have an option.

“Matic has all the attributes to be Manchester United captain but he arrived only one year ago.

“But I never care much about the captaincy, I care more about the life in the dressing room and the leaders. The armband means what it means. ”

My question is, where is Pogba?

I like my captains to be vocal, active and give 100% even if they're technically not too gifted.

With that, from his list, Young, Herrera and Matic are good.

But Valencia, Smalling and Mata are no-go.

For me, I would rather Pogba, Lukaku, De Gea or any of Herrera, Young or Matic.

I don't think he would mention Pogba when Pogba is happy to leave the club.

20 Jul 2018 20:30:10
Moreover Jose is also happy for him to leave. I for one can’t wait for Jose to move on.

20 Jul 2018 20:39:19
Has Valencia done anything wrong as captain to be removed? If he is still first choice he should be captain.

I agree with Jose on the captaincy. It is over emphasized and made out to be far more than what it is. What we really need is for players collectively to lead on the pitch and take respinsibility when we are down or have to close out a game.

One speech by Pogba at half time being broadcasted has suddenly got everyone clamoring for him to be captain yet the French team had a different captain who rarely spoke and made a mistake in the final.

Perhaps we should realize you don't need to be captain to show leadership.

20 Jul 2018 20:48:13
Fans are more bothered about the captain than players, don't need the armband to be a captain .
Looks like Tony will be our captain and first choice rb.

20 Jul 2018 20:53:08
Well said Refaith. Captains in football is not as important as it is in other sports like cricket. Where each decision is taken by the captain. Football is too fastforward for the captain to be involved making decisions all the team.

20 Jul 2018 21:06:32
Not entirely clear how effective you can be as Captain if you don’t speak the language.

20 Jul 2018 22:23:46
Making a habit of this today but again agree with jred, other players without an armband can open their mouths and inspire and lead without it.

20 Jul 2018 22:33:49
Captains make a difference on the pitch not in the dressing room, managers make a difference in the dressing room.

20 Jul 2018 23:41:34
Played Saturday football for years and our manager gave the captain's arm band to the less vocal or talented footballer. Always seemed to give the player a boost. Never questioned his commitment in the games then. Players who have it all should lead by example and prove to everyone each match why he is best.

21 Jul 2018 05:51:46
Guys, the first thing I think of when you say captain is a person who is vocal, respected and loved by players, shares a bond of friendliness with teammates and can pull the team up during the game by motivating and haranguing his players to give more.

Based on this, would you choose Valencia over Pogba?

Redfaith you got me wrong;
1. I'm not advocating solely for Pogba - I also mentioned Lukaku.
2. Pogba gave a speech every game not only the Argentina game (you probably didn't know) .
3. Younger players have a special connection to players like Herrera, Pogba and Lukaku because of their infectious playfulness.
4. Valencia is quiet and his English is still wobbly at best (how many years in England? )

On a final note, how many times do you see Valencia, Smalling or Mata in-game dishing out commands and guides to other players?

That's why I said Matic, Young and Herrera are all capable because not only are they vocal, but also technically adept (yes, Young also to an extent) .

But when you take all these qualities; leadership, vocal, language, technical proficiency, will and desire to win, tenacity respect and bond with team-mates, then look no further than Lukaku, Pogba and Herrera for captain material in the team.

The second tier can hold Matic, Young and De Gea.

But Valencia, Mata and Smalling? 😂.

21 Jul 2018 07:59:25
Maybe Valencia, Mata and Smalling have been chosen for their length of service? Or maybe because they won’t be the types to question Jose’s instructions on the pitch?

21 Jul 2018 08:06:31
Neither Pogba nor Lukaku are captain's for their countries. That didn't stop them both rallying the troops at the world cup.

Ideally everyone should have a winners mentality and shouldn't need to be geered up by thier captain.

21 Jul 2018 08:37:04
How about what has Valencia done right?

We seem to have this noose around our club, that accepts ticking along as success. It was the same with Rooney as captain. Just maybe you expect your captain to not be Joe Average performer, even if you ignore the insane fact that our captain can't speak the language.

Same thing goes with the managers, too tolerant and too desperate to believe that a leopard will change their spots.

21 Jul 2018 09:40:42
I think WRD might not be far from the truth and that's in line with what I said.

Basically, Mourinho wants a yes man who not only obeys him but also does not have an opinion or does not have confidence to express himself.

21 Jul 2018 09:54:05
Let’s be honest, the only way is up.

21 Jul 2018 10:43:39
Like john terry cassilas and zanetti? Nonsense yaz.

21 Jul 2018 11:12:48
I’m wasted.

21 Jul 2018 11:23:40
Who didn't Mourinho have a fallout with among them Ken?

People where here basically crying over missing someone like Keane.

Nonsense is thinking someone else's point of view is nonsense just because it isn't same as yours.

21 Jul 2018 11:41:50
Yaz👍
ajh didn't get the credit u deserve.

21 Jul 2018 12:04:55
seems Jose is going by length of service. Carrick was captain last season, hardly ever played.

21 Jul 2018 13:20:26
Wasted when you wrote the post probably, Tony. Us old ones got it, mate.

21 Jul 2018 13:21:23
Don't think captain's need to be loved. I doubt one of our greatest ever captain's was loved too much. Feared, definitely.

21 Jul 2018 15:20:28
Valencia couldn't handle the No7 shirt . We are missing out by not selecting Pogba as Captain he is the best to motivate on the pitch and can speaka da lingo! 😆😆.

21 Jul 2018 23:14:25
Not when your opinion is contered
by facts yaz. Zanetti and terry nor cassialls were yes men. All strong characters who often fell out with jose but all kept the captaincy.
The nonsense was you just making stuff up. I agree with 2 of yoir choices as captain. Herrera wo t play often enough i suspect.
Jose said valencia will be captain weeks he plays hardly a ruining endorsement that some would
Have you believe.

22 Jul 2018 10:25:27
A+ Tony 😂.
