Just finished a book on holiday in which a chapter was about Ron Atkinsons time as Manager and the players he wanted to sign but just couldn't get over the line. Terry Butcher and Charlie Nicholas were two I remember him going for but I don't recall him ever chasing a young Glenn Hoddle or Peter Shilton. Does anybody recall any other players who almost put on our famous shirt over the years . Fergie tried and failed for Gazza and Ronaldinho but I bet there are loads more. 😆😆.

I used to chat with big Ron when he came to the belfry where I worked. We had the old villa physio working with me and Ron used to come in regularly.
During one chat he told me a great story about meeting with Brian cough in the midland hotel in Derby about 81/ 82 maybe and we made an offer for Shilton and Trevor Francis in exchange for Gary bailey and a striker (can’t remember who right now)
The deal was approved by the United board but it fell through due to the “extras†that the forest boss wanted in his pocket.
The full story is a cracker and big Ron can tell a story right enough. Had many a good afternoon chewing the fat about football and united.

I posted a link on here previously to an interview Atkinson did weeks after getting sacked where he said the board p***d about over money when he had told them Butcher and Lineker were lined up according to him
Lets not forget Butcher was swayed by Rangers, bigger money and they impressed him more by how much they wanted him.
Gazza, Trevor stevens, Varane would have been great buys if we could have got them over the line.

Many moons ago I had a few drinks with a crowd that included Richard Money (won European cup medal for Lpool) and a youth team coach with Forest - the Forest fella told us Cloughie let him rent his villa in Majorca (i think) for a week, the fella said nice place but the plates, towels, mugs, and even a sweeping brush by the pool had "property of nottingham forest" written on them .

Turned me down as a youth player many years ago. Worst decision ever. Mind you, so did Bury so perhaps they knew what they were doing 😂.

One was an absolute nutter who I would have loved to have played for us for his passion. I would have taken over from Cantona. The other was Duncan Ferguson.
