Anybody else find it a bit odd how blind has been completely frozen out? I understand darmian he is shocking but I feel blind still has something to offer. Yes he is not the quickest or the strongest but he does have a very good footballing brain and can put in a decent cross. I know he is off in the summer most likely but I thought he wasn’t too bad at left back and can also probably slot in midfield if need be if we play a three. I do think he is massively out of favour with Jose and doubt we will see him again. I’ve always been a fan think he’s a good player but obviously we do need better if we are going to mount a serious title challenge.

Putting aside his rugged good looks you are correct, but he’s not th only one is he? I guess Jose has finally settled on what he considers his best team, the one that started at Chelsea perhaps. Add in Rash, Mata and Lingard up front, McT has emerged and Carrick is now available in midfield, he has a lot of options at CB and Young and Shaw at LB.

My biggest issue is that Shaw is praised for his commitment and progress and then immediately dropped and no can’t get a game. That’s a strange way to motivate a young player, hopefully sensible conversations are taking place behind the scenes.

I like Blind, very good footballer in my opinion. He can do a good job at CB, LB or in midfield. You need players like Blind in the squad.

I know Shappy posted y'day that we needed a player capable of dictating the play in midfield and I think Blind could do this job especially in a midfield 3. He's intelligent, reads the game very well and he's positionally astute. I can see no reason why he couldn't play that role in a midfield 3 to give Matic a rest especially at Old Trafford.

I've always thought he played pretty well at CB to be honest. Ok in the big games and against the more physical sides away from home he has struggled on occasions but at home, when we generally dominate teams I think it helps to have a player that can build from the back and start attacks rather than Smalling who can only pass the ball 5 yards sideways.

Very underrated and useful squad player in my opinion.

{Ed001's Note - you have set the bar low there, a player who can't play away from home, so immediately ruling out 50% of games, and not against physical sides, is a useful player for Man Utd? Surely that is exactly what you do not need? You are aiming to win the title not avoid relegation Danny, you don't do that with players who are only worth picking 3 or 4 times a season!}

I think Blind is a very talented player, his vision, technical ability and reading of the game is top class. However, he does struggle slightly with pace and power, most of the time his reading of the game means he isn’t exposed too often. In the EPL he will be exposed more often though due to the emphasis placed on physicality in England.

I think he has played better in defence than he has in midfield for us due to him having slightly more time and space playing further back. Also midfields in England have a tendency to be built to be dynamic rather than technical. We like midfielders who do lots of running and throwing themselves into last ditch tackles. It’s more entertaining than someone getting hold of the ball and making the ball do the running, while never having to throw themselves into last ditch tackle because they read the game and made a smart interception or cut off the run before it developed.

I don’t think a manager like Mourinho will ever truly appreciate what Blind can bring to a team as he is likely to see the weaknesses in his game as too fundamental to the way he wants his teams to play.

I think Blind would be an amazing player in Italy, I could see him becoming one of the top midfielders in Serie A, his talents suit that league, and that style. Maybe a move to Inter Milan or Roma would be ideal for him.

It's a game of opinion's Ed but he's a good squad player and this is a Dutch International we're speaking about.

The whole point of squad players is they don't play every game. I didn't say we could win the league with Blind as our first choice centre back or central midfielder but he can play a variety of positions and is a vastly underrated player in my opinion.

Just to clarify I didn't say he couldn't play away from home or against physical sides only that he has struggled on occasions where his lack of strength and pace has been exposed.

In the modern game it's not just about the 11 on the pitch and it's very difficult to win the league and compete on all fronts without having good players to cover for injuries, fatigue, suspension's, loss of form etc.

To answer your question he's exactly the kind of player Utd need in their squad in my opinion.

Shappy - Good post mate totally agree.

{Ed001's Note - I wasn't saying otherwise Danny. I was just pointing out the way you worded it was suggesting you could barely use him yet you called that a useful squad player. Hardly that useful if you can only play him in games you should win without him anyway!

Personally I think he would be ok next to Matic in the playmaker role. I don't think he is good enough defensively to protect a back four or to play as part of it. He ball watches far too much and wanders away when he should sit, so he needs cover.}

Blind has played 5 league games for us this year can't make the bench never mind the first team .
Jose doesn't tend to rotate as much as some managers and tend to work with a smaller squad.
At Chelsea he said "I want a small squad - 21 players plus the goalkeepers and no more.
"It is a correct number for the specific work we want to do"
And said similar at United.
When Chelsea won the title Jose only used 22 players and when bastion was allowed to leave last year he again moved to a 22 man squad.

Blind probably isn't part of that.

I understand now sorry Ed I can see how it could read like that.

{Ed001's Note - no worries mate, I was a bit surprised coming from you that you would say that.}

Blind is smart but slow. That fit Van Gaal's possession-based system, but not Mourinho's. He gets stranded too often in the up and down game of the Premier League. In a system where the team dominated the ball, he could take up the right positions and keep the ball moving, but he struggles in a game with a lot of transitions like our current setup. I imagine he may move to get more regular minutes.
