The winners of both European cups facing off should be as big as it gets.
If this was strategically placed mid season people wouldn't even consider it to be a friendly but as its early pre-season some do.

Yeh jred agree 100%. And 3 points in the opener is must for UTD.
But i am a cup final fan, even the charity shield i make sure i watch if we are in it.
And i think tonight's game warrants a higher level of importance that it is getting - albeit at a very inconvenient time of the footballing calendar.

Looked at as a friendly in the UK but taken more seriously on the continent. I always think it should be treated more seriously. The 2 european champions duking it out.

It is better for us as a club in the league that it is pre-season and doesn't mean we have to be a fixture behind like Chelsea were a few years ago, but it does mean that it is looked at as a pre-season friendly which I don't like. It is the cup that we can compete for that we won longest ago I believe (1991) so I would be delighted if we won it, but having it at the time that it is I would much prefer a win on Sunday.
I am sure if we do win it certain people will be on here saying it is a nothing trophy but look at the previous winners, this is a match worth winning and should be celebrated as such if we do.

No matter what everyone sees this match as. Rest assured Jose will be pumping his forces for tonight. It's a trophy to win and we all know Jose gives it his all for a trophy.

If we lose it will be a friendly if we win people will be using it to justify a better season than we really have, brandishing it about with words like "treble". Annoyed me last season how the Charity Shield suddenly became a major success!
In saying that I expect the first 60mins to be serious/ intense. Then it will drop off into a friendly game. Ultimately we need to treat it seriously as it's a major advantage to have such a competitive game before the weekend, get us match sharp so we can blitz the weekend game.
I haven't watched any friendlies this summer, but will be watching tonight. Have that little twitch I used to get before a big game, which is strange, but nice all the same, no doubt it will leave me after 5 mins when Jose turns on the reverse siren for the brand new double decker!

haha yeah, I had to check myself half way through and not let my lack of football get the better of me! Desperation does crazy things.
I hope we put on a show tonight, put some fear into our domestic rivals and let CL teams know we are back. The biggest thing we can take away (apart from sharpness) will be to put a marker down for the rest of Europe to take notice, we need to re-instill that fear we have lost recently. Couldn't be a better way of doing it than teaching Madrid a lesson.

I imagine Jose will take it seriously for first half especially against his old club and then consideration for the weekend will come into play. No matterwhat I hope this game gets us match sharp ahead of the weekend and we hit the ground running.
