I have wondered what it is specifically about Perisic that Mourinho values so much. When the Morata deal was dragging due to Real being difficult we cut our losses and moved onto Lukaku. Who is a very different kind of striker to Morata so obviously those differences won't have a major impact in how Mourinho wants to play next season.

But with Perisic there doesn't seem to be an alternative, it seems to be him or bust. So what is it about him that makes him so unique.

Then I watched the game against LA Galaxy and something struck me. If we were to change formation next season to a 352 type formation even in half the games we really need a player who is able to play the wingback role but someone adaptable enough to play as a winger in Mourinho's preferred 4231.

Perisic suits that role perfectly, he can be a true wide player but also has the work rate and defensive nous to play a wing back role on the left if we wanted to switch formation. He would play it in a similar way to Moses did on the other flank for Chelsea last season.

I suppose it also makes our seeming lack of urgency to sign another LB to challenge Shaw. And also why Mourinho seems set on having 6 CB's in the squad for next season.

I'm thinking along similar lines, would be a very good option at wingback.

However, I'm not sure that Jose is determined to keep all the cbs, more likely that he can't find buyers for Jones and Smalling.

I agree Shappy, I think Jose demands a lot from his wide players. From what I've read Perisic is very hard working and can be just as effective defensively as he is offensively a perfect Jose wide man. He's tall, fast, powerful, direct, defends diligently and can score goals. Forget his age he could be a very effective signing for us over the next couple of seasons.

In terms of what Jose demands from a wide player I fear for the future of Martial. Whilst he can be devastating on his day he's just not comfortable in defensive positions and at the moment he doesn't work hard enough off the ball. I see Martial as more of a wide forward rather than a winger. I think he's a player better deployed through the middle, pulling out wide into the channels and running with the ball a bit like Henry used to do. I really like him as a player, he's got great potential I'm just not sure he'll flourish whilst Jose is our manager. Whilst I think it's a shame I think Persisic may be a better fit for the team. Food for thought.

Good point Shappy, I think as well that In a 433 or 4231 Peresic also offers a lot of Width, has a good cross and chips in with goals.
Was also wondering whether the 352 formation Also suits Shaw, pushes him slightly forward to suit his energy and speed whilst giving him the cover by the left side of the back 3.

Last year it seemed like we had a plan in the transfer window. This season it seems like not only do we not have our targets locked in, but that we don't even know what kind of formation/ system we want to play moving forward. (And yes, playing 3 at the back, which is really 5 at the back, against LA scares me bc its deja vu to LVG and makes sure we'll score even fewer goals than last year) . We're buying a winger when we never play with wingers. We were looking at multiple strikers when we only ever play with one.

Mostly though, I'm looking at who we've bought, and who we might buy, and the scary question is this. Will the team to start this season be better than the one that started last season? My guess is no, despite spending 100-200mil. Lukaku is not a step up from Ibra, I still rate Smalling highly so Lindelof is not a guaranteed improvement, and if we lose De Gea than there's no doubt that we would have taken a step back. There's also the insanity of still having players who clearly are not good enough for a team challenging for the league and the CL on the squad when they should have been sold weeks or months ago (Fellaini, Young, etc) . I really thought that JM got it, that he had depth and was spending money on guaranteed starters so that after a few transfer windows JM would have a starting XI of world-class players as Barca, RM and Bayern all do. Instead, we have a large squad of rotational players and haven't added any world-class pieces that fit our system or improve our team. Just my opinion. but I struggle to believe that the elite European teams will be worried about facing this current united squad.

With respect KG, some of your points are a little out:

1) Playing 5 at the back against LA was to experiment with a new system and get players used to the formation and tactics so that it can potentially be deployed during the season. Not because we were scared of Galaxy.

2) On not having a plan, how can you possibly know what Jose's plan is for this season given that we've played one warm up match? It's possible you are right, but we have no way to tell without further information.

3) it seems that we have more of a plan with acquisitions this year. Jose isn't going after big names - he wants players that fit the system he wants to play, hence going after Perisic rather than a bigger name like Sanchez. Or a ball playing CB like Lindelof that no one had heard of before. I would be more worried there was no plan if we were just chasing random big names, and then trying to form a system around them.

KG I'm an upgrade on Smalling.

KG,

I can't even tell if that post is genuine. You have absolutely no idea who our targets are or whether we are close to buying them or not. For a fact we already have 2 of them in and are looking at others. To me it seems like Jose knows exactly what he wants.

Wisco. in response.

1) i'm not saying they were scared of LA, but why are we using our first match to work on an alternate system that at most we play 5% of the time, but more realistically, like 0% of the time. Also, it's a horrible system and just as it did for LVG, it just keeps us a man short in attack while providing no additional defensive protection. I just don't believe you'll ever see it during the season.

2) I'm assuming his plan is a continuation of his work last season (formation, quality of signings, etc) . I don't believe he's going to start from scratch in his second year. I think we all should have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Jose.

3) This is basically my point. We have a deep squad, perhaps too big even, so adding more rotational players isn't needed IMO. We should continue the work from last year and bring in 2-3 world class players that are essentially guaranteed starters. Adding a guy like Perisic who isn't likely to start ahead of Mickey makes no sense to me, especially when we NEVER play with wingers.

Finally, on Smalling. You all have short memories. Granted, he was inconsistent last year, but he was injured for parts and still contributed to the stingiest defense in the league. That's after a 15-16 season in which he was one of our only top performers and was well on his way to being a world-class defender. So no, stand-united, you are not better than Smalling. Neither is Daley Blind and there's no guarantee that Lindelof will be either.

Umm. Chelsea won the league playing the system. Spurs play it. Arsenal changed to it and we're superb the last 10 games of the season.
Also, smalling is utter rubbish.

18 Jul 2017 07:50:54
Smalling was massively over rated in his 15/ 16 season imo. All he did was play to an acceptable level that should be expected of a United CB anyway but because it was so much better than people were used to everybody started singing his praises. I said all along he has a mistake in him and it still came at the end of the season in the fa cup final. Fortunately it didn't lose us the game, but if it had, people wouldn't have forgotten about it so quickly. He's not good with his feet, "marks" by grabbing and shirt pulling and is prone to making mistakes. Jones is a better player in my opinion but his injury record is appalling and stops him putting together a consistent run.

If we did go to a 352 do you think we would play the juventus way (with pirlo at base with 2 ahead. Thus suited Pogba. Or the more defensive 2 HM with 1 ahead of them more like Chelsea.
For me it should be the former to benefit Pogba and Harera.
