Are we really going to pay 40 million for a player that will be 29 in 2 weeks time?
It's not that I don't like Matic but I think Chelsea will have our pants down with the price.

Don't forget the position Matic plays. He has a good 4-5 years left at the top level at least. I actually think he will still improve over the next two years so all in all in would be a great signing for me. He is a very good player, just doesn't fit into Conte's system quite so well.

That seems to be the going rate atm, City paid 50m for Walker who is at best a good RB with EPL experience. Matic is a far better player with greater experience, while being only a couple of years older.
Transfer fees have gone silly this summer and I don't think anything can be taken from comparing today's transfer fees against any from before, even those from last summer. If teams of Everton's modest current standing within the game can go round dropping we several 30m deals in one window then that really shows you the level of crazy we have got to.
Remember the shock at how much we sold Ronaldo for at the time? Looks like we got ripped off now and not just because of what he achieved but when you consider we sold a Balon d'Or winner for the same amount you could sign Walker and Pickford.
40m for Matic in this window looks very fair to be honest.

Age doesn't matter if the player is going to do a job and improve the team.
Look at zlatan for example.

Age does matter in one respect. A good 23 year old might reasonably be expected to maintain or increase in value after 4 years, a 30 year old may not be worth anything at the end of the contract. It won't be the determining factor, but it is relevant.

Some of the tabloids saying Juve are ahead of us for Matic, personally I don't believe that . BUT if its where he goes, and Dier doesn't look likely, Monaco saying Fabinho not allowed to leave this window . where would it leave us?
Not impressed with Carvalho at Lisbon . wonder if there is a plan D?
I can imagine Jose is anxious right about now over this position.

or we can pay 35 million for an unproven one season wonder and then sell them on in 2 years for nothing. Depay and few others come to mind or buy a proven croatian international who can really improve us.
