I'm just curious about something about which I hope I can be educated on by someone who has more knowledge about the professional game.

So, we all look at players and we think we know what are their strengths and weaknesses. For example; "Tony V is a terrible crosser of the ball".

Firstly, is our perception correct? How do Tony's stats look compared to someone who we think can cross the ball very well?

Secondly, does Tony V have the same perception? Does he know he is a poor crosser of the ball?

Then, if he knows, what if anything does he do about it?

If he does nothing, then we have to question 'why' since as he is a 'professional' footballer.

Or, if he puts in lots of practice to get better, why do we see no improvement?

The principle can be applied to many players e. g. Rooney's first touch. I suppose the question I'm asking is why we don't see improvements in some players' obvious weak areas, even over many years, and why clubs don't insist they do something about it?

Sorry if it's a naive question.

{Ed025's Note - they practice all the time MM, but in the heat of match situations it will not always come off, the better players have a better percentage obviously but i think tony does a good job actually mate..

Managers work with players everyday see there game first hand .
Fans are biased and think we now better from our armchair .

{Ed025's Note - very much so jred..

while i don't disagree with what you say jred, sometimes it is the managers who are biased and fans being lot more objective, we have seen more than few examples where as a fans it is clear as day that the player isn't good enough but manager for whatever reasons keeps backing that player with no real success.

Common sense
Are you joking?
You think you know better from your armchair, have a word .

16 Jul 2017 15:57:49
no i am not jred, all our mf's except carrick in last 2-3 years of SAF, rooney under LVG, ivanovic in the season jose was sacked from chelsea, these are but a few examples, everyone who watched any of these teams will tell you these were clearly visible problems except to the manager.

'armchair fans', 'stadium fans', it doesn't matter, we're all fans who have opinions that are as valid as the other but all these fans don't know as much as the management team do regarding our players, well I hope so anyway, end of the day we don't know what Jose wants his players to do on the pitch and what pleases Jose from the performance or not unless he tells us thru the media.

Good question, I think the perception on Valencia being a poor crossers is correct, I'm sure he is aware of this and tries his best and practices every day but some players just can't do certain things aswel as others, take a player like makelele when he played, he was an incredible player at what he did but if he got 20 free shots at goal from 25 yards out in training or in match not many of them will be hit as he would like them to be hit in his head.

Common
Players teams etc have good and bad days but if you honestly think you could do better your nuts.
Yes Jose got sacked but he still done a far better job than you would of done .
A certain player may have a bad game that doesn't mean another player would of done better . Which is what fans like yourself all ways think .

The manger works with the player and is in a far better place to pick the team than you .

Very easy to say I told you so after the event .
Very easy to say what's wrong not quite as easy to do what is right .

Which is why these people get paid millions of pounds to do a job .

I have a slightly different thought as to Valencia and his crossing.
In his first couple of seasons his crossing was very good, It was around the time of Rooney's hair transplant and he scored 9 or 10 goals that season via headers mostly off of crosses from Valencia.

It was after Valencia's leg break that his crossing seemed to suffer, he then had a change of position from winger to full back. And his crossing has never really recovered.

Now it might have suffered due to the leg break and how the leg healed, it may be the loss of confidence after the injury, or it could be the change in his position meaning he has run further before crossing which might mean he is more fatigued when crossing and less able to concentrate on the cross itself, or he is marked differently or crossing in different circumstances.

His crosses used to loop slightly more where as now they are driven harder and faster.

Or alternatively maybe we don't possess strikers with the right sort of timing and movement to get on the end of his crosses.
If you have a striker who can keep up with Valencia and drive toward that front post and glance a header on target then maybe we would score more from his crosses. But most of his crosses go in front of our strikers who are either going to the back post or the middle of the goal. It's far harder to score a header off of a driven Crosse coming in at pace from those positions.

It's a mix.

Most people think they know their kids better than a random person, however it doesn't mean the random person can't identify something the parent has overlooked in an instant.

Managers get more right than they get wrong, otherwise they wouldn't be doing the job for long. But they don't always know best.

I knew ten times more than LVG during his calamitous time in charge, despite not watching the players train, liaising with coaches or having as much experience in the game. I have no doubt had we picked a random supporter of Man Utd the overall performances would have been better and we would have finished higher. In fact no manager would have been better. There comes a time where experts become stubborn and blinkered, happens to the best of us.

For example, Lukaku was a strange signing, it contradicts what we are trying to do because he has no touch and isn't mobile. The manager is making a big mistake overall, no doubt the minute Lukaku scores a hattrick people will say I know nothing and Jose is right, but what about the countless games where he will contribute sweet FA and in fact hamper our fast attacks (if we do attack fast)? Nobody is perfect, but on the whole managers do tend to know more than most fans, that doesn't mean they make the right decisions with that knowledge though.
