Noticed something on espn just now that I think people should pay attention to.

The confederations cup is using video replay. It's been used in multiple sports for years now, and most have found a way for it to work without hurting the game. I do think the future is one where non-judgement calls like offsides (which are enormous calls in a sport with 1-0 results) are checked with instant replay.

I'm wondering, do people think additional replay usage will be successful and what calls would you want to be included in the replay? How much of the refs job should have a backup? Cards? Dives?

It's a slippery slope, there is a danger that the ref will turn to it for everything. I understand why people want it to make sure decisions are correct but I worry that it will. become disruptive.

The major problem they are finding with the trial is the lack of understanding what is going on from a fans perspective. The only way it can work is if both referee and video referee have mic's so we can hear everything that is being said.

In the Portugal game the other night the ref went to the video ref and nobody had any idea why, we watched replays for no reason and it was like they were searching for something to be incorrect. The commentators are generally more clueless than us and couldn't work it out either so ended up with them talking nonsense. I think what needs to happen is we hear the video ref and the commentators just stay quiet until the decision has been made. 'Pundits' make all of this worse with their biased views.

I'd give each captain the chance to challenge three decisions. If you're wrong you lose a challenge, if right you don't. Works in tennis. Captains would only challenge big things. Trial it in the Europa?

Good shout that RWWD.

I guess that's my point GDS, what on Earth were they looking for? It could easily become all encompassing, we see it it Rugby Union where some referees have lost the ability to make a decision.

RWWD - I like your idea, but I'd not give it to the captains, I'd give it to the manager. He has 1 life, if he calls it and gets it wrong then he loses his call - this way the manager will never risk using it unless he is sure there is a problem and then they may chance their arms at the end of the game when the drama is heightened anyway.

I'd also introduce a rule that no player may approach/ talk to the referee - red card offense to challenge a decision/ protest. I'm sick of refs getting swarmed and players dragging out minutes arguing, cajoling. Telling a player to get away and a new one jumps right in his place - sometimes they are right, most of the time they are trying it on. The ref shouldn't have to justify every decision he makes to people who benefit from him changing his mind.

If the manager has his 'golden button' he can press it at any time to attract the refs attention. The ref can then go back to the video, maybe the 4th official and video ref are miked up to the ref and manager/ rep of club, so they know when the incident occurred minute/ second wise and can search the footage quickly. Maybe an off the ball elbow in the face etc will be picked up, a studding, dive or the obvious goal line/ pen stuff.

It would clean up the game and it would also stop the time wasting, harassment and probably speed up play in the end.

In the NFL you don't hear their conversation but the ref announces what aspect of the play is under review. Or they give a full explanation when they return so you know what was under review. There's also better communication between the league and their broadcast partners so the tv announcers have some insight into what is going on so there's less random speculation and more examination of that aspect of the different camera angles.

Still believe there will be a gradual introduction of this and eventually through trial and error they'll settle on a good system.
