The forward position is definitely a problem and the go-to solution is to buy a new striker. I agree we need one based on the current crop of players.

But would that position be so desperate if we had excellent wide players?

If we had a top right and left winger I'd be happy going into the season with Rashford and Martial competing for the centre forward position.

If our wingers were (players similar to) Sanchez and Bale I'd have no problem if Martial or Rashford started the season as the focal point between those two. If we had 2 wingers of that quality playing 70-80% of games they would chip in with plenty of goals adding to the 20 or so that Martial or Rashford would get playing between top class wingers.

You're not a fan of Morata are you Wazza.

I would like that aswell, I think away from home or against teams that opened up a bit against us it could work great . At home against park the bus merchants with no space behind we may need a plan b though. Perhaps a bit more strength and aerial ability to get on the end of things wide players like u mentioned would create, even if it's just a flat track bully who can deal with the lesser teams which was what caused us the loss of so many wins last season . Now all we have to do is get Sanchez and bale, I knew there would be a snag.

Morata is the new Rooney on here, he's always mentioned in a reply regardless of the OP subject 😂

In all seriousness though I would take someone like Sanchez or Aubameyang ahead of him all day long.

Slate - If we signed a DM it would allow Pogba more freedom which would give us extra height in the box. Rashford is 6'2" and will fill out in the next couple of years. I think we'll be keeping the wig too as out midfield numbers are light, so I think we'd still have enough height through the middle.

I'd love for us to sign a couple of top wingers. Depay was brought in to excite and create but it didn't work out and we haven't really replaced that position as so many other positions have needed addressing.

I agree with u wazza I'd love to see a couple of world class wide men more than a new striker . We have lots of really good players out wide but out of position and players like u mentioned would make us look pretty formidable ahead of the likes of Herrera pogba and a new dm . There are loads of teams this year tho who may park the bus at old Trafford I'd still like a plan b striker great in the air for them days when huth or someone like that are dominant against crosses as if the wide men u mentioned were playing the ball may well be flying into the box often . Don't miss understand though that would only be a way with world class wide men and just a plan b against defensive teams turning old Trafford into the alamo. I'd be okay with martial or rashford as plan a same as u.

Wazza,

Even the old United teams have had strikers who have been able to put the ball in the back of the net, on a consistent basis. The Andy Cole's, the Yorke's, Rooney (yes, him) and Van Nistelrooy. Yes, they've had wingers who have given them inch-perfect passes to convert those chances, but substituting them for average strikers wouldn't have worked.

In today's scenario, where you probably don't get as many chances to score or even open the oppositions, it is imperative to have a striker that has the ability to convert those chances. No matter who your wingers are, if your striker can't convert those chances, then the is no point in having world class wingers.

Now, I don't think Sanchez would be an out and out winger for us. He plays through the middle for Arsenal and I doubt that he'll be willing to sacrifice his striker role and play as a winger.

Rashford and Martial have been a hit and miss this past season. They are still learning and still growing, so they will take time to mature and become better players. but, I doubt that we have the time to play another season with average strikers and not great ones.

Raghav,

The players you mentioned have been flanked by Giggs, Beckham Ronaldo, even Park was effective.

We currently don't have a single out and out winger in the first team. Martial and Rashford are playing out of position. I'm confident if they were flanked by the aforementioned players they'd improve and settle into the position.

We're also relying too heavily on our CM's to create. Our OOP wingers are drifting inside to their natural positions and it's getting overcrowded. Having good wingers would create more space for our CM's as oppositin full backs would be drawn out. This was a big problem last season, opposition defences were so narrow because they had no reason to move apart thus leaving very little space in the channels.

Wazza,

I get your point, mate. I know we haven't had wingers of the quality that we have had in the past.

Yes, whoever has played on the wing in the last season and even in the previous seasons have had the tendency to cut inside rather than beat the fullback and cross the ball.

Our CMs have had to do the majority of the work because like you said, the quality of wingers is really poor and even our fullbacks can't cross the ball.

What I was trying to convey in my earlier post was that, we can't just have a team of world-class wingers and average strikers, we need to have a mix of wingers and strikers. None of our current strikers, apart from Rashford on an given day, have the ability to beat their man and that I feel needs to change as well.
