Out of interest, are there any teams currently that are likely to struggle to meet the homegrown quota this year in the premier league? Not directly related but could possibly inflate the price of some of the English players and help offload some of our lesser wanted ones like Lingard, Smalling and Januzaj (unsure if he qualifies as home grown)?

{Ed002's Note - Clubs don't need to meet any HG quota.}

I'm assuming Lingard is lesser wanted only in your head? Jose played him in many big games this season, I think he is extremely unlikely to leave this summer, he's nothing special but he's a great squad player.

It amazes me when someone underrates Lingard so much. He has not scored much but is a really good squad player.

Standard football mentality. Mian when we don't produce first team players, knock them down when they make it and declare them not good enough.

I hope we all realise the Class of 92 as they are so called was a complete freak of nature year and a once in a generation thing to have the pleasure of witnessing.

My opinions of Lingard are that, he's a west ham/ Sunderland/ wba/ Bournemouth starter. Not united reserve quality.
One would argue he has scored in 2 finals, but what does he do apart from that? He makes the right runs, but doesn't finish well. He's 23 (I think) and still has lots to improve.
Park Ji Sung was a better player by a country mile. Ideally, he shouldn't be in the squad due to our lack of quality he still is.

Lingard has had to wait a long time for his chance with no moaning. If a few other players had his attitude then we'd be a lot better off!

He's not a good young promising player anymore he's 24. I'm not one of those people who knock down the youth performers when they don't shine and look for the next shiny signing, I'm actually really looking forward to the development of Fosu-Mensah and Tuanzebe and have been waiting for Pereira to get his chance also and was disappointed he went on loan to Granada.

Yeah he's a decent squad player but nothing more than that. Sentiment shouldn't always play a part and if we sign one or two wingers someone has to make way and out of Mata Martial and Lingard I know straight away the one I'd rather have shipped out.

Is he a player you'd trust week in week out if a starter got injured to consistently help United perform.

Fair enough I might be being quick to judge and hrs scores one or two important goals for us and maybe deserves his chance to stay in the squad but we shouldn't be settling for back up players of mediocrity. I'd rather give another academy player their chance and place such as Angel Gomes or Josh Harrop otherwise they won't get a chance to break in.

And I know players develop at different rates but like I said he's 24, sure he has plenty of time to develop still but I can't see him being nothing more than an average player and honestly if we want to compete on all fronts we need more than average to fill out the squad.

Only my opinion though and I'm sure there's a reason Mourinho seems to rate him and he knows a lot more about football than me.

Apologies Ed for the question I was reading about how they wanted to increase the home grown quota to 12 I believe it was to give England a better chance of winning Qatar 2022 and they were changing the criteria to 3 years in England before the age of 16 not 18 but it must've been a dated article.

{Ed001's Note - the article is just nonsense, there never has been a quota.}

Its all well saying Lingard is a good squad player, but is he? Yes he does a job and yes he get's on with it when he is benched. However, we should be aiming for elite level in Europe, competing with the likes of Barca, Real, Juve, Bayern. Would they consider Lingard as a squad player in their team? I don't think so.

30 May 2017 16:18:12
@GDS2 and @Srestha

He may be a good squad player to fill in for a game or two but would you honestly trust him to start for multiple games in a row if the starters got injured. If you compare him to other teams squad wingers he doesn't compare (apart from Arsenal as they're severely lacking in that department) when Chelsea have Willian and Man City now have either Sterling or Bernardo Silva depending on who Guardiola starts it makes having Lingard as a back up squad player make us seem a long way off.

Fair enough though he has done a job for us and maybe I'm being too harsh wanting him shipped off but I'd rather gibe Pereira a shot after his Granada performances.

I personally think Jesse is a good player, watch he's off the ball movements he drags defenders all over the place. Granted he may not be world class or ever reach those levels but he's a good squad player who will do whatever he's asked to do. And he's a passionate player with being a fan, I will never jump on the Jesse not good enough bandwagon.

They were relegated and he played well in some games. I think both will get a squad place next season and an opportunity to shine in our pre season.
