Am I the only one who does not see the vision behind why we are looking at Griezmann? He is a good player but where does he play and fit into our system? His best position is as a floating second steiker behind the number 9. Similar to what Rooney used to play behind Van Nistelrooy. But to get the best out of Pogba we need to play a 4-3-3 imo.

But we already have the likes of Mkhitaryan and Mata to play there. Adding another player to play through the middle while what we are missing is creativity and pace from out wide and a striker who can play with his back to goal doesn't look like the best investment to me. Seems like another big fancy name being bought for a lot of money but without putting in a lot of thought.

I'd rather we went for a pacy winger and a proper number 9 instead. From the list of players Ed002 mentioned in the sharkopod Belotti and Perisic would be my choice and both would be available at the right price and complement what already exists at the club. Kroos/ Brozovic would add some much needed vision in the team as well and I like the look of Fabinho. All 4 players represent something that we don't already have in the squad. Add another center back and left back to that and its a great summer imo.

What do the eds and all of you think?

Lots of realism there re Greizmann Red. It's only going to get more frenzied the nearer we get to the WIndow opening in July. Only the reportards are linking us with him, (and everyone else for that matter) Jose is a canny manager and I reckon his wishlist is already written and will contain some real surprises (who reported we would buy the boy Bally last season? ) .
His demeanour this season shows his frustration with the players he has had to work with and I think the Glazers will give him an open wallet to put his project in place (then once we are back up there with Real and Barcelona they'll most likely sell us on) .
Your striker comment is smack on, without Zlatan we look lost in front of goal and is the reason I for one am finding it difficult to be positive about the final in a fortnight.
That said, no one will be more happy to turn up here and have s. h. One t thrown at me when the lads win 4-0.

Belotti has a 100mn price tag and perisic has played no 9 this season and looked distinctly average for last 2-3 seasons when he played on the wing, was not even a regular starter.

15 May 2017 12:14:06
I agree with you 100% re griezmann and have commented earlier saying that i would rather pay 60mil for James than 85m for griezmann.

15 May 2017 12:23:12
Common sense moyes,

Belotti may come at a similar price but is a much better fit for us is my argument. Perisic does not play number 9 and doesn't even have the attributes to do so.

I also think Willian of Chelsea could be a great option for us on the right wing where we lack a proper winger. He has pace, good workrate, decent end product and is very good with set pieces which we need.

15 May 2017 12:44:45
Wouldn't touch Perisic for the price quoted!

15 May 2017 13:19:28
I'd rather pay more for a much better player in griezmann rather than go for a poor mans version in James tbh, he's world class is griezmann, could build a team around him, we have some in place already like Bailly and Pogba, rashford, and this would propel us to compete at the BIG table, I don't see James doing that for us.

15 May 2017 13:29:50
Dembele of Dortmund is my preference for the winger. His pace and dribbling skills are amazing he's also one of the top assisting players in Germany. He needs coaching but he's already of excellent quality for the first team. For the Striker role Lukaku would be my preference as he knows the EPL and has delivered goals over multiple seasons. I also wouldn't be opposed to Barkley for the RIght attacking role.

15 May 2017 13:36:52
Allan don't mention James, I did a few weeks ago and got shot down. Apparently he's a knob off the pitch? Who cares what he's like off the pitch. We can't have a team of Juan Mata's.
I would like to see us sign James. He's better than what we've currently got.

15 May 2017 13:51:11
We're going to have to pay £70/ 80 million if we want Griezmann or Belotti. For that price we should ask about Lewandowski. IMO one of the top 2 or 3 number 9's in the world with a proven track record who would fit in either a 433 or 4231. Brings others into play as well as scoring plenty. He'd be the ideal signing for a striker for me. It's clear despite Rashford's impact up front he is unlikely to be first choice there if Jose signs who he wants in the summer.

I wouldn't sign Griezmann to play as a winger. If we're not going to build a team around him in the position he has become one of the best in the world then it's surely not worth the outlay?

For the wing, I think Willian is a great option. He's shown he can provide and score in the PL and played well under Jose.

15 May 2017 13:52:19
@2toms and Allan

From what I have seen of James he is another central attacking midfielder, a position in which we are already well stocked. He isn't the quickest and won't add the pace out wide that we need imo. So I wouldn't buy him regardless of his attitude.

@Ronnie

I haven't seen any quoted price for Perisic yet even in the papers.

@rewz

Lukaku is great when he has space to run into but I don't think he has the game to play with his back to goal and with a team that has majority of the possession and where the opposition defends deep. We already have Rashford imo to do what Lukaku offers.

I think a summer of Belotti and Willian/ Perisic would be excellent to conplement what we already have.

15 May 2017 13:56:02
The players linked and the amount of them means a massive outlay, the prices rumoured would put me off if it was my money and I was Gona spend that kind of money I'd be shopping in a different shop kroos, lewandowski, bale, varane, walker, granted unlikely but I'd wave my cash and try them first.

15 May 2017 14:03:40
I agree Redfaith that we are well stocked in that position, I just think he's better than what we've currently got.
In all honesty though, there's other areas of the pitch that need addressing much more urgently. We need a 25+ goal striker and a decent CB before anything else.

15 May 2017 14:10:03
Redfaith 100mn for belloti or greizmann is not even a question, better fit means nothing if 1 is a worldclass player and other a untested 1 season wonder. Perisic has more or less played Griezmann's role just starting out on the wing this season.

15 May 2017 15:08:36
Good posts CSM. Outside ronaldo and Messi, griezmann is probably one of the best players in the world.

At this moment in time, we do not have that type of player who can change a game all on its own.

Mourinho loves flexibility, griezmann is that plus he is a world beater. For me, if he can be got, it's a no brainer.

Although I believe Jose would like another no.9. I would say bite the bullet, make rash your no. 1 in that position and buy another striker who can compliment him.

15 May 2017 15:13:57
@common sense moyes

I think fitting a particular system and plan and complementing the rest of the squad matters far more than an arbitrary term like "world class".

Griezmann is an excellent player no doubt but he is best deployed behind a main striker where everything goes through him and he plays facing the goal and has players both foewards and sideways to work with. But I don't see what he offers us that Mkhitaryan wouldn't in that same position.

We haven't utilized him to his full potential imo and the reason for that is a lack of quality on the wings for him to work with. So if I was given a choice I'd rather buy Willian and Belotti instead of Griezmann.

Belotti is a target man, has an insane conversion rate of chances and holds the ball well and brings others into play which is important. He can bully defenders and has an amazing heading ability. Those are the qualities that Martial and Rashford lack imo so he adds something new. Some have suggested Lewandowski but I don't think Bayern would entertain a sale.

Willian would also be unique in that he is a right winger, something we don't have, has good workrate, has worked with Jose, knows the EPL and is excellent at set pieces. All qualities that need.

I believe both these signings will provide a balance to the squad. Griezmann will end up being a luxury and probably an expensive problem imo.

15 May 2017 15:20:26
One Jose does well is buy.

Got to trust his vision and see what comes of it.

Looks like Mata may move on along with Rooney.

Essentially Greizmann will replace Rooney and Mata and Belloti/ Lukaku to replace Ibra.

One thing that has let us down is Goals. Greizmann and the other two offer them in spades.

15 May 2017 15:54:47
Redfaith for starters he will offer us goals especially the ones that convert 9 draws into atleast 6-7 wins, this is a guy who creates and converts a lot of chances in a very defensive team. I like mkhi but Griezmann is on a completely different level to mkhi, he is on another planet when compared to likes of belotti or perisic.

Now onto your better fit issue, greizmann can play off the striker starting at rw, all our rw seem to be drifting inside with fb providing the width, not to forget a 3 man mf would also help in that scenario which would really help pogba, rather than getting some average player to fit in a system that hinders our best player currently, i would rather tweak the system to get the best out of pogba and greizmann (hopefully) which would work lot better than buying likes of willian.
