When with football did the notion it's one or the other become accepted that the choice is be boring defensive and park the bus and you'll win things or be an attacking team scoring lots of goals and win nothing . Chelsea are top scorers and will win the league, Germany stuck 7 past Brazil in the world cup, all recent champs league winners go for it, fergie himself had a team good to watch with flying wingers and dominated .
This post isn't in reference to utd or Jose just how this belief in general amongst most teams came to be, sure defensive teams have won things but not as much as attacking ones.

It hasn't been accepted, the ideal is to be an attacking team that wins things but there aren't many teams who can do that on a regular basis. We were spoilt with it under Fergie for a long time so people expect it from us now. I think the long term goal will be attacking football that wins games but I don't think our manager at the moment thinks we have that capability with the squad we have.
5 or 6 players later we may see something different.

I do not think anyone is saying its results or entertainment. But you need to find the best way to win first then tweak it to be more entertaining as you go along. You should not be entertaining at the expense of results.

Hmmm we don't have a squad to attack despite hundreds of international caps, the most expensive player in the world, masses of big money international attackers,
Celta Vigo seemed to manage just fine and I'd only heard of one player an ex nowhere near the team city squad player .
I get it we got through they didn't but is it your belief our squad isn't good enough to attack celta Vigo at home.

Will all due respect, I think we were equally dire to watch in fregie's last 3-4 years. I remember people crying out how immobile our midfield was, unreliable fullbacks in eves and rafael, poor wingers - Nani etc. The only difference is that we had people who could put the ball in the net at the top of the team.
Mou has acknowledged that Man Utd need to play a certain way but like gds said we don't have the personnel. We get carried away with a superb result once in seven eight games- even the likes of Everton and Liverpool do that. So I don't think we can judge the squad to be capable of playing swashbuckling football and win at the same time because they are only above average. Even city with the likes of augero de bruyne sterling silva etc. cannot do that every game and are only a few points ahead of us. We need to be more pragmatic and patient with how we want our football to evolve to the lofty standards of the 2008-09 and before that.

It was a european semi final where a draw sees us through so it was the right approach for that game. They had to attack us as they had to score they plan to pick them off was the correct one. The only more attacking change that would of made sense would of been to play martial instead of lingard but martial hasn't exactly been banging them in so i understand why he didn't do that.

We were nowhere near as bad as this under any SAF EPL campaign. The last season was not very good compared with his own history, but compared with the UTD of recent years it was light years ahead. It's like saying Home Alone 2 wasn't as good as Home Alone, fair enough but that doesn't mean that Home Alone 2 was anywhere near as bad as Home Alone 3! (I don't think I ever watched Home Alone 3 to be fair, but the writing was on the wall) . We never did sign Strootman, where is he?
We did win quite a few games ugly for sure, but now we draw ugly most of the time. We were never ever this defensive, not even under the Philosopher.

I agree with beast, I think th poor level of performance under fergy is over played .
Our standards may of dropped as the financial restraints kicked in but we won the league by 11 points, it was worth the ticket price to watch rvp at the time .
