Mostly agree with posters such as The Beast who decry the way United play and perhaps it's right to expect more from a supposedly "top class" manager with such resources at his disposal.

However, you need to remember that this team is still in transition. It is currently full of a mixture of players from previous managers, some good some bad, who have been unsettled by Moyes then LVG's philosophy (plus also the come-down from Fergie's magic) ; now, I'm no expert, but I would guess that most football players aren't the brightest and prefer to have a simple system in which they know their role. Yes, top players are paid lots to adapt and should do it quickly, but I suspect it's not that simple. So firstly, JM has come in and found the team and the tactics in disarray.

Secondly, I think that Mourinho, despite the hype, is a manager with a, ahem, certain vision on how to win matches. I believe that he wants a certain type of player: one who gives 100%, tracks back, is quick and doesn't question him in private or public: how many of these players are at United? Herrera, Valencia, BAilly, Rashford? Not many - they are "mostly Mourinho", not "just Jose". So he needs a window or two to bring in the players he wants - and get rid of the Ines he doesn't. Winning is the most important thing to him and he'll do whatever it takes - regardless of the style of football. Thus, as United fans used to cavalier attaching football, we need to accept this compromise in order to achieve success. We can complain all we want, but JM won't change. He's a marmite figure who we have to support if we can stomach his methods.

However, and this might appease you Beast, I think that JM doesn't last any longer than a few years at a club because of his managerial style (confrontational etc) and the player she start to hate him. So perhaps a compromise might be that he shakes up the squad and achieves some success for a couple of years then moves on, to hopefully be replaced by a more rounded long term manager who can inspire exciting football AND achieve success ( (Allegri? )

So, yes, the football is awful to watch, particularly given the names that you'd think he'd do better with. But he's come in, found a mess and is attempting to construct and shape a team that he believes will win things. I think we just have to hope that he achieves all his objectives this window and assembled a title-challenging team for next season. And, to be absolutely honest, I don't mind if we park the bus a few times if it means winning the title again.

Great post wallace.

You could see it last night too.
Blind and Darmian were both absolutely woeful the whole game. Our left side was all signed up by a certain LVG.
He's made some sort of a player from Rojo who was almost destined to leave this summer.
Have some patience :P
And how awful is Smalling, it gives me a nightmare to play this way.

I think it's an absolute myth that we have parked the bus all season. We parked the bus at Liverpool early in the season after we didn't at Chelsea and got hammered 5-0, after that we didn't park the bus until a few games ago, we had about 30 shots a game at home but our profligacy in front of goal has let us down. The squad has become depleted, we have lost our top scorer and have had a few other injuries and that is when Jose has started to park the bus in games rightly or wrongly.

I know people have short memories and you are only as good as your last game but in 80% of games this season we have had a lot of possession, a lot of chances and unfortunately failed to kill the game a lot of the time leaving us in the position we are in.

Good post Wallace, I agree with most of what you say and I can certainly see why posters like Beast are unhappy but I'm actually a big Jose fan. In terms of style I don't think historically Jose teams play bad football. His first Chelsea team played some lovely stuff and his Madrid team played some attractive football as well. Yes he is more pragmatic than a Pep or Klopp for example, but they both have their Achilles heel. Pep has a tendency to neglect his defence and Klopp has been criticised that his teams tend to run out of steam due to his high intensity style. I think the key here is balance. I'm a firm believer that great sides are built from back to front. I think Jose offers the best balance. It's overly cautious and defensive at the moment but I think that will improve given time. I'm hoping he won't self combust as you've suggested and he will stay longer than his three year contact and give us the stability we need. I'm convinced he'll lead us to great things given time but do agree it's hard to be patient when he plays 6 at the back or 8 when trying to defend a 2-0 lead away at Boro. He hasn't got the balance right yet and I'm not sure why he has been so overly cautious but I'm sure things will improve as adapts to life at Utd.

I agree with gds. We haven't parked the bus all season. I honestly think the defensive reputation Jose has influences what a lot of people believe. Honestly last night when we go 1 up, would you rather we go crazy for a second and concede? Or keep it tight and counter. I thought the minute we scored we probably did the right thing in a European sem final! Buzzing we are through.
On another note I'm gutted for bailly, he showed his inexpirence. Also how pathetic was aspas the entire game diving around trying to get players booked? Should have been sent off.

Great post Danny, really got me thinking.

{Ed007's Note - You be careful with that son.....

Caolan, what a lot of people on here don't understand, is that it doesn't have to be one thing or the other. There is a middle ground. People who defend his ultra-defensive tactics in certain games, always say, 'should we have just gone all gung-ho for a second goal'? No, we shouldn't. But neither should we defend deep at home, against mid-table teams, with 8 players behind the ball. And those who yearn for the swashbuckling style of some of Fergie's best teams, have to realise that's not going to happen overnight, and that sometimes a bit of caution is what is needed at a certain time in certain matches. All this 'either or' nonsense, does my diddies in.

100% agree there needs to be a middle ground. A reason why we may be struggling offensively is the quality of our defence? We obviously tried to counter them when we went 1 up. However, darmian and blind were poor which dragged miki further back? Perhaps that hindered us last night. Next season I think performances will pick up a lot more with a solid back line, so our wingers won't have to drop deeper and deeper to cover.

I think for a lot of the season we played good stuff but struggled to score, there were many games we clearly should have won but for whatever reason couldn't find a goal.

Lately we look knackered and that has changed how we play, as for last night the tie should have been put to bed in the first leg, it wasn't which made last night a nervous affair. Semis are notoriously difficult, we won, we're through. I've given Jose stick for being a miserable sod but in terms of results it's fine lines.
