A few thoughts on our young attackers after the weekend:

Lingard may lack the quality at times, but you cannot question the shift he puts it. He tracks back to tackle and is constantly moving to find spaces in attack.

Rashford may be lacking goals lately, but he has looked explosive and ambitious. His near misses were very good efforts, and he looked tricky and dangerous throughout the match. He continues to do all the right things.

Martial, however, worries me. He seems to disappear more in big games, and looks like he is sulking rather than raising his game, by either trying something imaginative or pushing his teammates on. I hope it is an area he can grow in, playing with belief in difficult matches.

As one of the better pundits said at the beginning of the season has anyone actually seen Martial smile or look like he is playing professional football and not just a kick about - face on him makes him look like he is doing community service.

Lingard is a good squad player, he one of those players we need to help the team when injuries and suspensions occur

Rashford has the ability but needs to prove it, he had a good opportunity the last few games to make a statement in being our number 2 striker, honestly he needs to accept being a winger for us for a few more seasons until he can prove being a striker, if not might have to accept he may have to leave

I really think Martial marriage collapse really affected him, personally put a arm around his shoulder, tell him to sort yourself this summer and give him another season to prove himself before writing him off.

Martial was very poor on Saturday his movement off the ball was really poor. His effort was poor and when he did get the ball he didn't use it well.
He has been poor most of the season looks miserable and show s lack of fight in most games imo. Personally I don't think he is a great player and don't think he will ever be a really great player. That's just my opinion.
He has had a difficult year personally that will have had a bearing on his form so perhaps he will do better next year. I hope he does he needs to do a lot better.

Martial looks like another young player going backwards.
Is any of our young players doing well under Jose .
Top manager and will do well at United but we have seen over his career he isn't great at developing youth and that's what we have seen so far this season.

Martial for me can leave in the summer IF that's what he personally thinks is best for him. If he wants to stay at UTD then he needs to sort his head out!

Rashford is IMO struggling with second season syndrome and in addition to that, tbf his first season did come about at no notice so next season will tell how good he really is.

Lingard? Love the lad, he may not have the natural talent that Martial has (and doesn't use) but he makes up for it in graft, tenacity, attitude and love for his club.

He's given youth a chance jred, they've not taken their chances, no good blaming Jose for it. Truth is maybe they aren't as good as we would like to believe.

Welsh, you can only compare, mate. Last season, Rashford and Martial were electric. This year, they look like they're struggling. There may be other contributing factors, but Jose's reputation for not being interested in developing young players, has to count for something here as well. Like jred has said, I still think he'll be successful here, but we may need to shed our emotional attachment to the Utd ethos of at least trying to bring young players through to the first team, for a while.

He has give rash and martial a chance not sure about any others.
Not sure martial or rash are wide players to be honest and can't remember many saying they weren't good enough last season .
Both going to be good players imo.

Martial's party piece last year was cut inside and curl/ hit the ball far post. It worked on several occasions and he was regarded as a "keeper" with the potential to be a great. As with countless others, its the second season that determines the progress and to be fair, he hasn't kicked on and coaches/ defenders know what's to come from him. He still has strength and speed but looks deflated as thngs aren't coming off for him and he ain't gonnna keep on getting opportunity after another imo- I reckon a left sided player who has attacking quality may well come in this summer and it could be to his detriment.

They both have tremendous raw talent. But of late, Martial's attitude has to be questioned. But not Rashford's, his mentality has been outstanding despite his dry spell. And he has not hidden either, take his very good free kick effort, for example.

Rash and martial were unknowns last season, maybe they've just been found out, hopefully not, Bailly is 22 is he not young and doing well under Jose, Lingard is young been given lots of opportunity, what other youth would you give a chance too in this rebuilding united team, TFM? Tuanzabe?

These are not the players that should be plunged into the United of now. Sorry but it's an easy to stick to beat Jose with, maybe Jose is just being honest, he's given tho whole squad a chance more or less nobody can deny that.

Good post Welsh. Jose giving plenty opportunities. Up to the players to take them.

03 Apr 2017 20:27:08
Martial was not unknown, maybe by fans in England, but the people in the know were very aware of martial. That's why we paid the big bucks.

04 Apr 2017 08:40:45
Yes jred we could have saved some cash and brought Benteke for 30mil :-)

04 Apr 2017 11:16:56
We'd pay big bucks for the opening of an envelope.
